Game Thread #4: Cubs (2-1) at Brewers (1-2)
Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers, Apr 10, 2009 3:05 PM CDT
Finally, baseball returns to Miller Park.
Braden Looper makes his Brewer debut today as the Crew hosts the Cubs in the 2009 home opener. Since making the transition to starting before the 2007 season, Looper is 24-26 with a 4.50 ERA, and has thrown 373.2 innings. Today's game will be his 41st appearance (and ninth start) against the Cubs: He's 3-6 with a 2.61 ERA against them in his career.
For the Cubs, it's Rich Harden. He went 5-1 for them in twelve starts to close the season last year, his only 12 NL appearances. In his career as a starter, he's 41-20 with a 3.23 ERA. In two career starts against the Brewers, he's 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
Game time is at 3:05 from Miller Park.

Go Crew!!
Interested in seeing how Looper pitches vs. the Cubs today, he has a poor lifetime record against them, but a pretty good ERA, hopefully the bats will wake up for the Crew today and Bernie will see some slide time!

can’t wait for the game to start!
Friday afternoon is kind of an awkward time

Watching the Tigers game
Of all the changes to a regular baseball game in the last several years, there is none that I hate so much as this singing of God Bless America. Damn, that’s a terrible song.
by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 10, 2009 2:10 PM CDT reply actions
I'm fine with it in special situations.
If the only times they play it are home openers, Sundays, the All Star game and Game 1 of the World Series, I can live with it.
But I suspect there are still some parks where it plays much more than that, and that takes away its significance.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."

I'm not a fan of that one either.
Not that I’m against patriotic music, but patriotism is a concept a little too big for a country song.

I don't mind the national anthem at the start

Melvin defends Suppan
“When we signed Jeff, the things that highlighted us about Jeff were that he was never on the disabled list, he was a durable guy,” Melvin said. “He’ll go out there and win you double figures.”He’s great in the clubhouse; he’s a veteran guy that players respect. We didn’t expect an 18-game winner, a 20-game winner. Jeff has never been that.
“He does have moments, like some pitchers do when they’re in slumps. They’ll have good games and bad games. It’s almost similar to what hitters go through. But when you’re a pitcher, it seems to stand out more and people notice it more.
”But I know without Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan going 9-0 in the month of August last year, we probably wouldn’t have the post-season appearance. Jeff has given us what we hoped for, what we expected."
He’s just who we thought he was! I can’t imagine how much Melvin would have paid the guy if he actually thought he was good.

Well, he's responding to the extreme critics:
The ones who say “We’re paying you like an ace, why aren’t you winning the Cy young?”
Unfortunately, he’s leaving out the less extreme critics who say “For the love of sauerkraut, can you at least pitch near replacement level?”

Melvin has no concept (of mathematics)
I know I’ve said plenty of times that Suppan is exactly what I expected. However, I would not have paid him $11 million a year for slightly above league average. (I thought that’s what all those indy-league guys they’re hiding in AAA were for.)
It's really hard to paint Suppan as even a slightly above-average starter
He’s definitely below average.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
I don't play fantasy baseball, at all
But I occasionally wonder if it would take more skill/luck to play nightmare baseball, where you have to build a team of players who will perform the worst.
Trying to draft well would involve two challenges:
1) Are they awful?
2) Is their team dumb enough/hamstrung enough to keep trotting them out there, even though they’re awful?
Jeff Suppan would be a very high draft pick in this league.
