Jeff has given us what we hoped for, what we expected.
Doug Melvin, in one of his more disingenuous moments, on Jeff Suppan earlier today.

okay...that was a bit out of context
the previous sentence was
“But I know without Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan going 9-0 in the month of August last year, we probably wouldn’t have the post-season appearance”
Actually
I’m not sure how it’s out of context. What do you think he’s referring to there?
Regardless, of NL starters, Suppan had the 4th highest ERA (behind Zito, Snell, and Backe). I don’t expect Melvin to say “yeah, I really screwed that one up,” not with two years left on Suppan’s contract. The correct response is to either dodge the question or say he’s a battler and we hope he turns things around in 2009. To pretend that you’re grateful for that performance is treating us like idiots. If I wanted that, I’d read a Tom H. article.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
On second thought
Actually, I take that back - it’s not the performance that bugs me. It’s 5th starter performance, but that’s not bad for a 5th starter, and we’re not exposing our AAA guys who might not be ready for the bigs just yet. What bugs me is how much we’re paying for him. If we were paying him as much as $1-2 million even, I’d be fine with him. But $12.5 million in 2009?
I just hope Doug isn’t so grateful that he contemplates picking up Suppan’s option.

Can you imagine?
The over/under for ERA is 6.00.

Maybe all he expected was 177+ innings per year
Regardless of ERA or other performance.

I could throw 177 innings if this is the only criterion for $10 million dollars
If I injured my arm, I would just toss underhanded lefty.

You don't have the innings-eater rep yet
It’s a GM thing, we wouldn’t understand.

It seems weird
that Suppan got such a ridiculous deal, when he’s neither Canadian nor a former member of the Texas Rangers.
