Julio wasn't ready
and if we’re going to get on Melvin for signing him (not saying we can’t), we need to dig up old threads from this blog to see what we were all saying when he was signed. it was a bad idea then that way too many people treated as a good idea. i’d kill to have Gil Meche right now.
by James Stanley Cocanower on Apr 12, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Fair point.
But I think the positive reaction to the Suppan signing was the fact that the Brewers actually made a significant move in free agency. But dig it up if you like. If you think it’s fair to hold us to the same standard as a guy who’s actually getting paid to make personnel decisions, have at it. But I have to say that I think that’s a load of crap.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Apr 12, 2009 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions
I was mostly on board, at the time
Well, it wasn’t a move I would have made, but I was buying the argument. We were overpaying, but a guy who doesn’t get hurt with an ERA below 4.5 has some value, especially given our somewhat fragile staff. (After all, his highest ERA in the 4 years before Milwaukee was 4.16.)
But I think it was obvious to most people at the time that we were paying a lot of money to someone who was fairly old and not incredibly awesome, and that it was a risky move.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
If I knew as much about baseball then as I did now, I would have ordered fire-bombing of Miller Park Christmas 06
I don’t know if I understood pitching evaluation beyond ERA then, though.

How many viewers did they lose at the end of that half inning?
