Win Expectancy Graph
SBNation Coverage

MVP: Craig Counsell (+.114)
LVP: Jeff Suppan (-.275)

For the second straight start, Jeff Suppan removed the Brewers from contention in a somewhat winnable game. Suppan allowed a home run to Alfonso Soriano on the first pitch of the game, and the wheels came off in the fourth when the Cubs plated four runs on four bases loaded walks (three by Suppan, one by Jorge Julio). Suppan allowed five runs on two hits and six walks in 3.2 innings. All told, Brewer pitchers combined to walk ten Cubs.

On the offensive side, Corey Hart went 1-for-4 with his second home run of the season and two strikeouts. Craig Counsell went 2-for-3 with a double and was on base four times, drawing two walks.

The Brewers' best opportunity to mount a comeback came in the fifth, when Prince Fielder came up with the bases loaded and hit what would have been a grand slam if not for an incredible catch by Reed Johnson, who entered the game in place of Milton Bradley. Bradley left early with a groin injury.

Hey

From McCalvy:

Brewers starter Jeff Suppan and reliever Jorge Julio tied a modern Major League record tonight by combining to issue four bases-loaded walks in the fourth inning against the Cubs. Since divisional play began in 1969 that’s only happened nine times, including twice in the past five days. The Braves gifted the Phillies four runs via walks on Wednesday.

Seriously

Not watching games where he’s pitching anymore, I’ll just turn it on in the 5th and assume we’ll be down by 6- runs. How much slack does he get til we start looking for someone else?

also

Next time one of his pitches hits the grass like 3 feet in front of home plate, he needs to get pulled, i dont care if it’s in the first.

That Johnson catch was incredible

The whole complexion of the game would have been different. Being Easter Sunday, I coudln’t hear much of the announcers at my house, so I had no clue he was in for an injured Milton. I was kind of curious, though, as to why I didn’t see him earlier in the game.

and

I might get in trouble for this but it deserves saying that the reaction around here was pretty awful as well. Everybody going nuts for Johnson getting beaned and for what? Making a great catch? Cheering for stuff like that is bush league and it says alot that Prince Fielder who was actually out there showed a helluva lot more class than the posters who bothered to comment here.

Not that’s it’s justified, but remember who ran into Gallardo last year, even if it wasn’t at all his fault really. Plus he’s just an annoying dude.

so

not intentionally causing an injury to Gallardo and making a great catch deserve getting beaned? I don’t even think Julio meant to do it because it wouldn’t make sense to put Johnson on and face Aramis but the reaction around here albeit not from the regular poster’s was stupid. That said I’ve spoke my peace so I’m out.

LOL WTF?

You justify a loss to your division rival by saying “the cubs will still choke in the playoffs”?! This assuming they make it over you? You’re telling me you’d rather have your team not make the playoffs than get swept out in 3 games?

What exactly is the point or the purpose of even mentioning this? You should be worried bout whether or not the Brewers will make the playoffs. The Brewers only won one more game than the Cubs did. Focus on that not how the Cubs will suck.

Cubs' fan & UW grad perspective:

A very weird, long (3:23) game. Suppan didn’t pitch well at all, but neither did Dempster @ 110 pitches. As somebody above said, Fielder’s grand slam would have completely changed the dimension of the game. Mad respect for Prince’s hat tip to Reed. We thought Reed was hit on purpose for his injury-inducing slide into 1B last year, and the slide into 2B by Joey was very, very close.

It’s quite clear our bullpen sucks and Lou has no confidence in anyone not named Carlos Marmol. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Heilman’s role moved to more of a closer/late-inning reliever rather than long sub. Hart had a great series against us. And I’m deathly afraid of Ryan Braun when he gets hot. I still think the Brewers have the inkling to get another arm in the rotation; there’s obviously money that could have been used on CC available to buy a decent starter. See you guys in May.

I've never heard anyone associated with the Brewers suggest or imply that Gallardo's injury...

… was caused by Johnson. Ten seconds watching the video demonstrates otherwise. I don’t think there is any way that HBP was payback for that incident. Besides, you saw Julio’s control tonight. It’s not exactly outside the realm of likelihood that the ball got away from him.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Apr 12, 2009 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

You're probably right.

Initially I thought it was payback, but Julio was pitching well that inning. Reed has a MLB blog and I’ll be interested to see his take on the HBP and/or grand slam.

Also...

… don’t forget that Julio wasn’t with the team last year. Neither was Macha, for that matter. Combine that with Prince tipping his cap to Johnson, and that’s a dugout that’s doing a pretty good job of disguising their ill intent towards Johnson. I dunno. I just don’t buy it.

Interesting Stat from Tom H at JS:
But Suppan’s skid extends much further than that. Going back to the beginning of last September and including the loss that eliminated the Brewers from the playoffs, the veteran right-hander is 0-6 with a 10.13 ERA in eight starts.

Over that span, Suppan has allowed 48 hits, including 12 home runs, and 20 walks in 32 innings.

Overreacting, a bit?

The Brewers never play well on the west coast because of their huge stadiums. Their next series was against one of the best teams in the NL. So they started the season 2-4. Would anyone have thought that too terribly unlikely before the season? I think we’d all assumed Gallardo had a great chance to win, Suppan would likely cost the Brewers his first 2 starts. That leaves the Brewers 1-2 over the remaining 3 starts and would anyone think that impossible? Get a little perspective, people.

The Crew could very well take 2 of the next 3 against the Reds and then they’re 4-5 having played 6 road games and 3 games against the Cubs. Don’t forget away series at the Mets and the Phillies later this month.

An 11-11 April record would be at least begrudgingly accepted by everyone on BCB before the start of the season. They’re still plenty capable of that with series against the Reds, Astros and Pirates. April never had a good chance to be a banner month. The Brewers record after May 31 should be much more telling.

It’s worth noting Suppan had a few decent, if not good, outings near the end of Spring Training so he’s not always going to be this useless. He’s likely to end up at or just under replacement level by season end. Any players the Brewers can bring in to his spot will be at the same level. Is Chase Wright going to mow down everyone? Hardly.

Chill out, people.
