Game Thread #11: Brewers (3-7) at Mets (5-5)
Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets, Apr 18, 2009 12:10 PM CDT
If you're anything like me, Saturday's 12:10 start is coming pretty early after a long night last night.
With that said, it's Yovani Gallardo (1-1) v. Johan Santana (1-1) at 12:10 at Citi Field in New York, and Saturday's Game Thread is now open.

people are probably hung over from last night...
or at least I am still….

I'm not hung over
But I am exhausted. 11 am on a Saturday is pretty early to be getting too excited.

Some of us aren't in Wisconsin
the game is blacked out everywhere else. I’m going to listen to the radio in the yard in about 15 minutes, but right now I’m watching “America’s Test Kitchen” instead.
Glad to see the Brewers getting the short side of the stick already...

Glad to see Macha
is at least willing to argue with some umpires calls

Maybe Brian Runge has a feeling Gallardo will fan 27

It seems like every time I look up the Brewers opponents have 2 guys on.
Nice job by YoGa getting out of it though.

To get to Gallardo
A man can dream.
Doesn't it say "in play, runs" when it's a homer?

homer always does
i think they sometimes don’t immediately put up “runs” if the play is complicated

So if we've established anything this season, it's that Jeff Suppan sucks.
but if we’ve established two things, the second one may be that Yovani Gallardo is capable of winning his own pitcher’s duels with a home run.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
And if we've established three things
It’s that i’m still a little too slow today to write timely, pithy comments during Gallardo’s at bats.

Afternoon, everyone
Let’s pause for a moment and remember this.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
The first homerun...
for the man who is Prince…and soon to be King!

Weeks' first homer was in the same game, off Santana

Prince's inside the park HR?
Or the Brewer careers of Chris Magruder, Trent Durrington, Julio Santana, Ricky Botallico and Tomo Ohka?

That wasn't the inside the park homer game
That one was blown by Chris Spurling.

I went to the Clubhouse sale 2 years ago. They had Gross jersey on the rack, I picked it up righta way to mull it over. It was listed at $250, but I thought what the hell. I walked up to check out, $75 bucks! I kindly paid and left. That’s way cheaper then even a replica.

It's not like McGehee is way better than Counsell offensively
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
It's kind of the same argument as the one we've had about pinch hitting for Kendall late in games.
We don’t know that the replacement is better, but we know exactly how low Counsell’s upside is.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
We know plenty about McGehee
He’s got more power than Counsell, but Counsell is more likely to get on base, and by a larger factor than the power difference. There’s a reason McGehee is being treated as a defensive sub.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
Now, if you want to ask why McGehee got subbed in in the first place, ask away

Way to come back from 0-2, dude
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
Watching the Mets really makes me jealous of their ability to throw infinite money at their bullpen. I will never, ever feel at ease as long as the best we can do is trying to refurbish other teams’ castoffs.
The Brewers haven't exactly gone cheap in recent years either.
They offered about $10/year to Cordero, and spent a small fortune on Gagne, Hoffman and Riske too.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Throwing gobs of cash at people who probably should be reclamation projects doesn’t exactly count in my book.
Right
But it’s not that they’re cheap or don’t have money to throw around, it’s that they failed to spend wisely. That’s a different problem.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
You're missing the third option
Use guys like Dillard, “failed” AAAA starter types whose stuff plays up well in the bullpen, and build internally on the cheap. Melvin rarely does this, and I don’t know why (who besides CV?)
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
Agreed
Letting a guy like Bateman walk and continually signing retreads like Jorge Julio does not seem to be paying off.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Exactly!
DM appears to be doing it wrong. He’s signings like we have a large money pool, yet with our market size. It seems like we should follow the Marlins lead. Every few years make a really good team for 2 years or so, and then trade for more young talent and build an uber farm system to bring in good players. Fill in the rest of the missing parts every few years with his love for Gritty veterans.
Between two pitchers throwing junk for a year, we are on the hook for over 34 million dollars for just those two. Yuck.
McClung would count as well, I guess
Even though the Brewers didn’t draft and develop him, he was still in the same salary range.

what Ned yost is doing right now, hw proly wouldn’t be a bad manager
We..
We are not a good enough team to dig a hole this early in the season, I don’t see them play 15 games about .500 the rest of the way. Is it to early to start thinking about trading away feilder?? Proly would get more for him the earlier we trade him
+1
People keep saying, “Oh it’s early” “Oh we have plenty of times” “Oh we have 151 games left”. I don’t care what you say, this says it all:
I don’t see them play 15 games above .500 the rest of the way.
We just wasted a GEM of a performance by Gallardo and now are throwing out Suppan tomorrow? Might as well mark it down as 3-9. Then we go to play at the defending champs house. This team could be easily 4-11 by next week. That’s absolutely shameful for the amount of talent that we have.

yeah
I hate when people say that. These games count just as much as the games at the end of the year
at the end of the year
you get to see how much ground you have to make up though.
these are games that are easier to play mediocre. near the end is when you HAVE to play well, assuming you’re anywhere near the lead.
by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 18, 2009 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions
I actually disagree
You can’t look at it that way. It’s a trap.
I remember in 2007 when we were 24-10. It occurred to me that playing .500 the rest of the way would bring a 92-70 record, and I thought there was no way they would only play .500. They were about 10 games under .500 the rest of the way. The opposite applies— you can’t just look at it like this. You can find a 5-10 stretch in almost any team’s season, our’s just happens to be right at the beginning.
We should probably write of Boston (4-6), Cleveland (4-8), San Fran (3-8), and Arizona (4-7) too.
