Some Teams That Had 3-8 Stretches in 2008
I'm as bummed with the Brewers' 3-8 start as anyone, but here's some perspective. Each of the following teams went 3-8 at some point last year:
- Arizona
- Atlanta
- Baltimore
- Chicago Cubs
- Chicago White Sox
- Cincinnati
- Cleveland
- Colorado
- Detroit
- Florida
- Houston
- Kansas City
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Milwaukee
- Minnesota
- New York Mets
- New York Yankees
- Oakland
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh
- San Diego
- Seattle
- San Francisco
- St. Louis
- Tampa Bay
- Texas
- Toronto
- Washington
Anyone know the missing teams? Hint: each struggled through 3-7 stretches of their own.

I'm not interested in perspective
I’m interested in starting a list of puzzling Macha moves, to see if I can begin to understand the logic behind them. It will be infinitely more interesting than watching this team sleepwalk to defeat. Maybe when they decide to wake up and play, I’ll regain perspective.
Incidentally, how bad does the stretch need to be to get down to 10 or so? 3-10? 4-12?

I think the bad start has a lot more to do with the pitching staff than it does Macha...
… though I’m willing to be proven wrong.

I'm not necessarily anti-macha
Just things like double-switching in McGehee at the bottom of the 7th inning, only to pinch hit for him with Counsell to lead of the top of the 8th. I’d like to know the thought process that goes into something like that.

Ooh! Ooh! I know!
The Angels aren’t on the list. They’ve had such a promising start to their season this year, too!
Point taken.
But I’m wondering how many teams (and particularly playoff teams) had at least two separate 3-8 runs during the season.
The reason I ask is because having this poor stretch at the beginning of the season puts the pressure on the Brewers the rest of the way. Some of the teams on this list didn’t have this stretch until June, July or August—but the Brewers have “used up” their mulligan, so to speak, the first two weeks of the year. That means they may have to go the entire rest of the season without another similar stretch, which seems like a tall order to me.
I hope that made sense, and, of course, if you can produce numbers showing that most playoff teams had multiple stretches like this during the season, then I’ll gladly recant.
Suppan as the stopper?
I sure hope that extra day off works.
