Win Expectancy Graph
SBNation Coverage
So, apparently all I had to do for the Brewers to get a win was doubt the possibility. Jeff Suppan held the Mets to two runs on eight hits in six innings. There were some tense moments in the seventh when Suppan was allowed to hit for himself, then removed from the game after facing one batter in the seventh, but Todd Coffey came in from the bullpen and got a double play with the bases loaded to end the seventh, then another huge double play to end the eighth, and pitched the ninth to notch an eight-out save.
Corey Hart went 2-for-3 with a walk in the game. Rickie Weeks singled in a run to make it 4-2 in the ninth and was the most valuable Brewer at the plate. Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Bill Hall and J.J. Hardy combined to go 0-for-15 with one walk.

Hoffman back Sunday
Didn’t see this posted anywhere else and this is as good as any. Hoffman is scheduled to return on next Sunday. He’ll be pitching in Memphis as indicated earlier in the week:

Swindle now knows exactly how many days he has before he’s back to riding the bus with bestest buds in Nashville.

A key strikeout, a weak grounder single that might have been an error and a bloop single is not enough to DFA someone.

how much leverage was self-created?;)
that 8th was scary.

He's got 17 consecutive scoreless innings in 16 Brewers appearances now.
Not bad for a waiver claim.

i count 8 outs. doesn’t he get credit for both outs in the DP in the 7th?

Yeah, he pitched 2.7 innings

I love that image of Coffey
Such girth!
Also, the bullpen at Citi Field looks like an internment camp.

Rambling Al, about Suppan
Time for the “I don’t believe in small samples” crowd to come in off the ledge…or more likely, go out there on whatever the worry of the week is.
I clearly pointed out that if Suppan gets his control back, he’s fine, and I think I said I would give him 2-3 starts to see if that control was back— and if it was not, I would look to put DiFelice in the rotation. I’m pretty sure this is directed at us in some ways.

Just imagine how bad Suppan will be when teams catch on to the "start 6-7 LH hitters" strategy

oh, the irony
i think Rambling Al should look up “small sample” himself. On the basis of one good game he concludes Suppan is fine and always has been?

Suppan's first quality start since last August, if I'm not mistaken?
He still didn’t look great, but at least it helps assuage my fears of him breaking Capuano’s consecutive GS resulting in losses record.

1. The Brewers are third in team defense by UZR, saved 5 runs so far, behind only Seattle and Tampa Bay.
2. The Brewers are 4-8. The Rays are 5-8. The sky is not falling.

does UZR take into account the fact that the Brewers suck at defense? I don’t think so.

UZR measures the hypothetical ratio of unicorns to leprechauns, actually— it’s based on a long string of assumptions about the location of the leprechauns, because we can’t directly measure where the leprechauns exactly are. It has the potential to be totally wrong. So you’re probably right.

Not convinced that all is right with Suppan.
He only generated 2 swinging strikes, and his strike percentage was still below average (slightly below 60% for Suppan against a 64% league average). He was nibbling a bit more and it looks like he may have been squeezed a little bit, so this is definitely encouraging but I would say we’re not out of the woods yet.
Not that I’m terribly worried about Brewer fans being all about Jeff Suppan now.

But if he has better control, he’ll at least be better than replacement level. That’s really all we can hope for, I guess.

Citi field effect?
Agreed with the small samples… aren’t we getting a bit happy based on one game – in a pitcher’s park? I went to the game and thought two balls off the bat were out, but they bounced off an 18 ft wall or died in the wind.
I was bored earlier in the week and did an analysis from Hit Tracker off Suppan’s HR allowed in ‘08 and ’09, taking into account Citi’s dimensions and estimated wall heights (http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2009/02/07/sports/baseball/07field-graphic-ready.html) and the extra distance required to fly out over higher fences (http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8738). I estimated only 17 of the last 32 homers allowed would have left the stadium. There were some limitations to this analysis, though.
Basically, I think it would have been more of the same at Miller.

From an ESPN article
After the game, the Mets designated Figueroa for assignment and purchased the contract of left-hander Casey Fossum from Triple-A Buffalo.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=290419121
Is Figueroa worth picking up by the Brewers or any other team given present contract?

Two guys DFA'd so Figueroa could make a single start

At the risk of being too flippant...
At a minimum, the usual applies: I’m sure the Orioles or the Rangers could use him. He’s still pre-arb anyway, so no issues on that front.

And here’s a guy who might be on the lookout for new pitchers, too:
After today’s loss, Manny Acta came into the manager’s interview room. He was seething. He sat down and said, "I think it’s embarrassing. I think it’s unacceptable. I think our fans have every right to be mad, like we are right now. And it’s not going to be tolerated. We’re going to have a brand new bullpen tomorrow, and if those guys that come in don’t get it done, we’re going to continue getting guys out of here."

The incompetence of the bullpen?
After reading this, and after the Elijah Dukes mess (he was fined and threatened with demotion for showing up 5 minutes late…and he was coming directly from a team-sponsored volunteer activity, I think it’s the incompetence of the management in question. Fire anyone who isn’t a player.

At the beginning of the year, I was wondering if he would see time as a closer (before we signed Hoffman)
I figured there would be too many people in the way. I’m not so sure, now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in a closers role at some point this week.
