Thursday's Community Frosty Mug
Morning everyone,
I'm on the road today, trying hard to buy a house despite only having about six hours to look. As such, I'm going to need to take a day off from the Mug.
Consider this a community Frosty Mug. Post a comment with what you're reading today. The Brewers play at noon, so the game thread will be up at 11.
Do your part to help fill the Mug, then drink up.

Coffey and His Stat-Free Lifestyle (I like it)
Immune to the scoreless streak (though not to immense jacks to dead right-center), Coffey comments:
With a three-run lead, I’m going right after them. (The home run) is irrelevant. (Werth) got it. I tip my hat to him and go after the next guy.
“Winning is all that matters. If I gave up two (runs) there and we win, that’s all that matters. I can’t complain about anything.”
seriously
that’s the attitude the rest of the relievers should have
everyone else has been nibbling the corners.

it is truly the rally cleavage we've been looking for
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
The next time they show him running to the mound in slo-mo
I think they should play the theme song from Baywatch.
Suppan, who has seen his ERA rise from 4.12 in his final year in St. Louis to 4.62 in 2007 and 4.96 last year, isn't an option in fantasy leagues - Rotoworld
Matt Gamel
That bat belongs in our lineup….
Before yesterdays O fer…

Dude had an OPS of 1.459
Bill Hall had better start hitting the ball or he will begin to be a late inning defensive sub for Gamel…

If he continues to rake like that… I don’t really care about his D that much.

My guess
if Gamel keeps up this pace you see him on the roster at the latest as a DH for inter-league, and then in a platoon with Hall for the rest of the year.

Yeah, but he won’t keep up this pace. Unless this team is over 500 by that point, what’s the point in starting the clock on Gamel this year? I think pretty much every facet of this team needs to see a 180 degree turnaround for them to even bother bringing him up pre-september.
Well...
The Brewers brought Prince Fielder up to DH in 2005, so it’s been done before and two weeks won’t hurt much in the grand scheme of service time. Plus they already started his clock by calling him up last September.

OK I think I was reading that wrong
What exactly is the rule on the arbitration clock/super 2 status?
You get service time any time you are on a major league roster during the season
No matter if you’re called up in April, June, July, or September.
Players with between 2 and 3 years of major league service time are grouped together after the season. Anyone with 85 or fewer days of service time in the season just concluded is dropped from the list. Of the remaining guys, the top 17% are eligible for Super Two arbitration.
So imagine Aaron, Baker, Caldwell, Davis, Edwards, Franklin, and Gilliam have between 2 and 3 years of service time and are the only such guys in MLB. Arrange them in order of service time, say:
Aaron (2 years, 145 days)
Baker (2 years, 134 days)
Caldwell (2 years, 98 days)
Davis (2 years, 74 days)
Edwards (2 years, 20 days)
Franklin (2 years, 0 days)
Gilliam (2 years, 0 days)
But wait. Davis is a (s)crappy borderline middle infielder type and only got called up in September because of a gruesome collision behind second base. So since he only has about 30 days of service time that season, he’s ignored for determining who gets Super Two status.
Since there are only six guys left, the top 17% consists of Aaron, so he’s the only one who gets to cash in.

That Braun kid showed us that D is over rated
at least at third base ;)

Right, and we didn’t do much that year, IIRC. Moved the bad defender to an easier position = playoffs. Hmmm. ;)
To me it sounds like 14 games into the season you have already called it quits. Thats too bad.
I don’t know if you are new to the boards, but one of the things that has been covered repeatedly in the recent past is the question of whether Braun would have been worth 2 more wins had he and his bat started the season with Milwaukee vs. Counsellino’s bat. Brauns rookie year we were only 2 games out of the playoffs.
Billy is not doing bad this year, nor I am calling for him to go away. All I am asking is, how long do you keep Gamel down in AAA if he continues to smash the ball like he is?

you mean when do we play the hot hand? gamel stays down until it makes sense financially to bring him up, which means sometime near the end of may.
Bring Back The Old Logo!
Not really
Since he spent last September on the major league roster and got something like 28 days of service time, they would have to wait another month to avoid Super Two status in a couple years.

if we brought him in now?
would he be Awesome Two status?
or wait too long and he becomes Subpar Two?
okay…i got nothin’ this morning. it’s not even 9AM forchristsakes.

Worse than a bag of balls?
After going 2-21 to start the year in AAA Nashville, Jason Tyner was given away to the Detroit Tigers.
He is 32 and our depth in OF is pretty strong. What do you think that he is worth?
by Saberilliterate on Apr 23, 2009 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions
i had a dream last night...
that somehow us trading Tyner to the Tigers was part of a grand conspiracy to DFA counsell. Tigers would want Counsell, so we have to appease them with another freebie so they don’t leap on Counsell.
An alternate scenario was we were getting the Tigers to take Counsell, so then when he was ready for the Brewers again, he’d be DFA’d again by the Tigers and picked up by the Brewers.
I have no idea why I was such a Counsell-hater in my dreams last night. Or such a conspiracy nut.

He's not worth much, but it's pretty weird to just give away a player, right?
Politics? Respect for the player to give him a chance somewhere?
It's not that weird with fungible veteran guys
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
In one of the article that I read, it quoted Gord or Doug as saying that it was for future considertions. Whether that was a ‘cup of coffee at the winter meetings’ or not has yet to be determined.
The article went on to say that the trade was basically to keep Tyner playing ball. They were going to release him out right, but by trading him they keep him playing ball instead of looking for a team at this stage of the season and his career. Kind of a we feel bad for killing someones dreams situation I guess.

This is kind of a fun story
For the full thing, go here.
O’Day was to face Jays first baseman Kevin Millar, who was obviously confused at the name on the jersey.
“Gabbard?” Millar said with a laugh. “I thought that was a left-handed pitcher. [O’Day] came in throwing a sinker ball, side-armed, right-handed. I was a little confused at first.”
Millar’s confusion didn’t last long though, as he drove a pitch from O’Day into the left-center-field gap, giving the Jays a walk-off victory and bringing an end to the pitcher’s turbulent day.
“I’ll remember the day, not the outing,” O’Day said.

awesome
although, they should have brought out the masking tape and the sharpie marker and changed the name on the jersey. I wonder if the real Gabbard will ever wish to wear the accursed jersey that gave up a game-winning hit.
I find it funny that the umpires didn’t inform the opposing manager/coaches/players about the improper jersey/number
by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 23, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
I would’ve thought that would be at the very least a courteous move, especially since one is a lefty and one is a righty. If they did it to get the upper-hand in the game, it backfired, so shame on them.
