Game Thread #17: Brewers (7-9) at Astros (6-11)
Milwaukee Brewers at Houston Astros, Apr 25, 2009 6:05 PM CDT
So, admittedly today is not a great pitching matchup, but it is interesting.
Jeff Suppan returns to the mound for the Brewers today. After two terrible performances to start the season, he provided a quality start and picked up his first win against the Mets on Sunday. He pitched well in one of baseball's greatest pitchers' parks on Sunday, now he gets an opportunity to prove it was for real in one of baseball's greatest hitters' parks, Minute Main Park in Houston. Like most opposing pitchers, Suppan has been beaten up by Lance Berkman in his career (.438/.538/.844 in 39 PAs), but he's also been kicked around a bit by Geoff Blum (.542/.560/.958 in 25 PAs).
Across the diamond, the Astros will be led by Mike Hampton, who has somehow made it to his fourth start of the season without a DL stint. Hampton is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA thus far, and has not allowed a home run in his 17.1 innings this season. Of all current Brewers, Mike Cameron has the best career stats against him, going 10-for-31 with two home runs.
Game time as at 6:05 and the Brewers could clinch a winning road trip with a win, something many of us probably would not have predicted a week ago. Saturday's Game Thread is now open.

How do you tell? Was he injured?
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
I think
that they don’t want to take that chance. TT just said in his press conference that you can never have too many LBs in the 3-4 defense. Depth is the key for the front 7 on D, much like pitchers for a baseball team. The offense is playoff good so if the D can catch up then look out for the Pack next year.

http://www.soupsgrill.com/
I guess I haven't heard anyone say he'd "lost it."
Guys who develop into impact players usually flash that capability in their first season, or at least their second season, even if those plays are surrounded by blown coverages and mistakes. Hawk’s rarely if ever flashed, and on the few occasions he’s shown a bit more speed than expected and the instincts to make a big play, he seems as surprised as anyone. I don’t think he’s done. He might benefit from the switch to the 3-4, which will get him back inside, but he’s not the kind of impact guy you expect with the 5th overall pick.

yeah, allowing a pitcher to give up 7 runs falls
primarily on the pitcher for sucking – but there are always secondary sources of suck
biggest other load is manager (for not pulling him out)
but I also think the catcher should DO something when he sees someone warming.
But I suppose any infielder could shoulder that burden as well – they’re just facing the wrong way to see who is up in the pen.
