SBNation Coverage
In an ugly contest, the Brewers fell behind early and wasted several opportunities to recover, stranding a runner on second or third in six different innings.
Manny Parra's line will make it look like he performed better than he did: he allowed just one earned run (three total) on five hits and three walks over five innings. He threw a first pitch strike to just seven of the 24 hitters he faced, and became just the fifth Brewer pitcher ever to get the loss in his first four appearances to start a season.
On the offensive side, Mike Cameron went 2-for-3 with a walk and two doubles, driving in a run and scoring one. Brad Nelson also went 0-for-4 filling in for Corey Hart and remains hitless on the season.

He's out of options and would have to clear waivers
Which is possible. But then you bring up someone that never plays, either.

Exactly...
Who are you going to bring up to replace him? Gwynn? We already have Duffy. Koshansky? He hasn’t done much at all in AAA. Iribarren? He’s more versatile in the field, but has had little success at the plate in the majors as well; and we already have enough infield subs. There isn’t really anyone else to call up from Nashville. The rest of the guys down there need seasoning, and should stay down there where they actually get a chance to play everyday.
Nelson hasn’t had much (or any) luck at the plate so far, but neither has Kendall or Hardy, and they play a lot more than he does. He tore it up in spring training this year, and I still think he’s worth more of a shot than the 9 PAs that he’s gotten so far.

fair enough
i’ll sit down and shut up.
however, i don’t think that he should be getting regular play unless he’s at least tearing it up in simulated games.

this seemed to be one of Parra’s better games. If we cant score more than 2 runs against Russ Ortiz we deserve to lose

I'm not going to argue that he pitched well.
I missed half the game thanks to FSN. But I think this loss had a lot more to do with the guys left on and Weeks error than it did Parra’s performance. That said, it certainly appeared that he would have given up more than 1 earned run against a better team than the Astros.

As bad as this road trip looked after the first game in Philly
I will take winning 4 of the next 5 games.
I feel a lot better about this team than I did a week ago.

Let me spell it for you Cub fans O N E H U N D R E D A N D O N E Y E A R S
Just one more time, and then I'm done doing this after every Parra start
In between ripping casuals for making judgements based on small samples and talking about politics,
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pitcher as intellectually challenged as Manny Parra. He honestly appears to simply have no idea.
I’m sure Macha regrets giving Nelson AB’s today as well. The guy has a 800 OPS in over 1000 AAA AB’s, and needless to say, that translates to sucking unless you are a catcher or SS. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy take more strikes or swing at more balls in my life.

And yeah, there's a huge difference between being stupid and not having good control
Manny probably does not think, “Hey, I’m going to throw a fastball 2 feet outside to the pitcher here guys.”

Are you saying that he has a certain kind of syndrome
and it isn’t the up kind?
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
That's Rambling Al by the way

Hey, making judgements based on small samples is just fine...
as long as you make the right judgements, which Al obviously is. It’s just the casuals who get this wrong.
(My use of “right” is not a meta-sarcastic comment on his politics, I hasted to add.)
Darnit
I could’ve sworn there was going to be discussion of casuals focusing on the loss because they’re unable to appreciate Parra’s start.

I just figured out why the Brewers lost today
I remembered that I had a dream that Ned Yost was invited back into the team’s good graces, and as a way of burying the hatchet was asked to sing the national anthem. He proceeded to do so, and quite well—in Finnish. The team was scandalized and embarrassed, just as Yost had planned. I think I’ll call it “The Final Yosting”.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Was it the Finnish national anthem?

Nope, the American national anthem, in Finnish

It's not going to rhyme then

it's a really good translation
Also, cheese.

Like rhyming would be the issue there...
What about having to fit three times as many syllables onto the melody?
Well, since I don't speak Finnish, I can't be sure that he was actually singing about the shelling of Ft. McHenry
For all I know, he wrote an epic poem about Simo Häyhä and set it to the tune of the Star-Spangled Banner. Ned is crazy like that. As are my dreams, on the rare occasion that I remember them.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
How did you know it was Finnish then?
Maybe he just made up his own language in his time off, or learned how to pronounce Wingdings.

Because it was my dream, natch

Aren't you from Finland?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Funny....
If we had won 4-3 no one would be talking about his start….he did only give up 1 run in 5 innings..He didn’t pitch great by any means but he’s certainly not the reason we lost today.
Do we know how hard Roque Mercedes throws?

Brewerfan.net says 90-94, and WV pitching coach John Curtis called it “average” when dixie interview him last year.

Thanks. They were discussing his nice relief stats in the link report.

Cardinals Shmardinals
Because I’m too lazy to write a FanPost or FanShot or Fan95Theses, I thought I’d point out here that the Cardinals’ fast start might be (in part) because they’ve only played 6 road games all year. The Cream City Crushers, by comparison, have only had 6 home games, tied for the fewest in the NL. Given the SP we’ve seen and the road-heavy start, 8-10 really isn’t that bad.
(The Cards are not the worst in baseball, though. The D-Backs have played 15 of 18 games at home, and they’re still only 7-11.)
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Well, at present,
The Brewers are 6-6 on the road and 2-4 at home.

The Diamondbacks have played the similarly bad Rockies twice at home
And just finished playing the Giants. Good luck, Arizona.
