SBNation Coverage

In a turn of events none of us would have seen as likely a week or two ago, the Brewer bullpen kept the Brewers in the game and carried them to victory tonight.

It wasn't Dave Bush's best night, to be certain. He allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings, and the Pirates scored in the third, fourth and fifth innings to run out to a 5-1 lead. But the Brewers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth (including a go-ahead two run homer by Rickie Weeks) to take a 6-5 lead, and Jorge Julio, Mitch Stetter, Todd Coffey and Trevor Hoffman each pitched an inning of scoreless relief to close out the game.

The top of the order carried the load tonight offensively, led by Corey Hart, who went 2-for-2 with a double and three walks. All told, the top three spots in the Brewer lineup went 6-for-12, were on base ten times, scored four runs and drove in four. Six Brewers drew a walk in the game, as the Pirates gave out nine free passes.

With the win, the Brewers have inched back to .500 at 10-10, and get another chance for their first sweep of the season tomorrow.

victory is so sweet

especially when Bush beans three Pirates! I didn’t see the game, just the box score. Anybody fill me in? How did he not get ejected?

They were all just barely grazed

They weren’t hit intentionally; if they were, Bush has amazing control and is just full of crafty grit.

Yeah whatever

The length of the Brewers games means that viewers missed the first 20 minutes of The Bonnie Hunt Show. I can sense that Milwaukeeans are ready to rip the city apart.

Whoa

The only time viewers in Milwaukee can watch The Bonnie Hunt Show is on WMLW at 10 at night. That’s…bizarre.

No station in the country broadcasts The Bonnie Hunt Show later than Milwaukee does.

just got back from the game

nelson looked abysmal, back to aaa with you, but a good win for the crew. can’t explain how pumped hells bells got me, first time i’ve ever cheered for a ac/dc song, that’s for sure.

by sicklebeat on Apr 28, 2009 10:51 PM CDT reply actions

Totally

The anticipation just as they started warming Hoffman up was amazing, but that song really sends everything over the edge.

Honest to God, has Nelson even managed to make contact at the plate yet?

Every time I see him he’s flailing away at pitches in the dirt. I feel bad for the guy, especially when the boos started today, but he looks completely overmatched.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Apr 28, 2009 11:18 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

I like pulling for him and Duffy, but man, his only value so far has been to work the count before making the inevitable out. Then again, who are we going to replace him with? I can’t see putting Gwynn back on the 40-man roster…

Rhymes with "camel"

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

He's certainly hitting well enough

though without a place to put him regularly, I don’t know if they will.

He is!

My buddy was gunnin’ on ‘im the other day, saying he was gonna whiff. I told him, he’s due, but alas, he grounded out to the pitcher. Progress, anyhoo. He does look overmatched, though…

Did I read that right?

Corey Hart went 2-for-2 with

(bear with me, this is where it gets weird)

three walks

by Wayfaerer on Apr 29, 2009 1:55 AM CDT reply actions

That brings him to 11 for the season so far. He had all of 27 last year and didnt get his 11 until the 43 game of the season on May 17th.

by Saberilliterate on Apr 29, 2009 5:59 AM CDT up reply actions

i'll bet

he had a few IBBs early last year. That was before pitchers figured out how much he flailed at sliders.

by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 29, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

It seems like the team is trying to do better with walks

Except for Bill Hall for some reason…

keeps us grounded

but it also seems like he is hitting a home run a game lately so I will take it ;)
