Game Thread #22: Diamondbacks (9-12) at Brewers (11-10)
Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers, Apr 30, 2009 7:05 PM CDT
Who would have guessed that Max Scherzer and Jeff Suppan would meet this far into the season and Scherzer would be the one looking for his first win?
At 7:05 tonight, Scherzer takes the mound for the Diamondbacks in game one of a four game series. After starting the season on the DL, Scherzer is making his fourth start tonight and is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA. He posted a 3.05 ERA in 16 appearances in 2008, but went 0-4 in that season as well, so he's still looking for his first major league win. Scherzer faced the Brewers one time in relief in 2008, and allowed three runs in one inning.
For the Brewers, Jeff Suppan returns to the mound. Suppan is a former Diamondback: In 1998 he was drafted from the Red Sox in the expansion draft, and later waived after going 1-7 with a 6.68 ERA in 66 innings. For the Brewers this season, he's 1-2 with a 7.32 ERA, and has gone two whole starts without taking a loss. Chris Snyder, Chris Young and Conor Jackson all have career OPS' over 1.000 against him.
Thursday's Game Thread is now open.

Diamondbacks
This is only their fourth road game of the season. Their April schedule reminds me of the discussion about giving teams that play indoors a lot of home games early in the season.
Last Sunday they played a home game with the roof open – that probably doesn’t happen very often.

Suppan was waived earlier in his career
When he had a better ERA than he has thus far this year… I know small sample size- but that was probably 10 games or so of pitching when he had 66 innings pitched.
If he is 10-15 games in and his era is in the high 6’s, will he be DFA’d this year?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
point of comparison
last year, Dave Bush was 46.2 IP into the season (8 starts plus one relief appearance, plus a quick demotion) with an ERA still above 6.5. ERA was still above 5.70 more than 70 IP (12 starts) into his season, though he had shown some improvement by then.
Also, cheese.

He just gave up a home run first.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Actually, six.
Then DiFelice pitched the seventh.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
That'll teach me to take your word for things

I usually try to at least admit the dozens of stupid mistakes I make daily. :-)

I would've said we're talking about the game, not the season

Bulls/Celtics in double overtime
5 games out of 6 in the series went to overtime, I believe.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
You had to bring up Boston
The Sox have Jonathan Van Every pitching in the bottom of the 8th, 13-0, losing to Tampa Bay.
Van Every is an organizational player type…and, btw, an outfielder.
He hit a home run yesterday, didn't he?

But not until there was a runner on.

Time for Kendall to get caught stealing third, methinks
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
On a double steal though
So Rock can say it’s good that they still have a runner in scoring position.

Do you use a cast or a splint
for a fractured testicle?

It would be funny
If Gordon gets knocked out of the game and they double-switch Snyder out.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
