Opening Night Open Thread
The Giants defeated the Dodgers 3-1 in the final 2009 spring training game earlier today. Tonight, however, the games begin to count. The Atlanta Braves take on the defending World Series Champions Philadelphia Phillies at 7:05 PM CDT on ESPN2. The pitching matchup is Atlanta's big free-agent signing Derek Lowe against Phillies veteran Brett Myers.
The first thread of the 2009 Major League Baseball regular season is now open.

Gameday Question
I’m trying to listen to Jim Powell, but as far as I can tell, the only way to figure out which feed is home vs. away in the new flash application is trial and error. Does anyone have a better way or has anyone found something that indicates it?
Continuing a conversation with myself...
Is it just me, or does Jim’s voice come across differently on the Braves’ system? It doesn’t seem nearly as soothing and smooth as I remember.
I'm watching it on TV
I guess I’m just hoping Joe Morgan says something quotable and/or quits on air.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
All he did all not was drop names…
“Hank Aaron…”
“Frank Robinson…”
That and he couldn’t explain OPS… other than to say ‘some people use it to measure offense’
I just don’t get it… why does he still have a job in baseball commentary.

Am I the only one
Who thinks the Braves don’t look like the Braves in these uniforms?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I agree.
I said the same thing to my dad as we were watching the game. They just look bad in all blue.

McCann!
He’s my fantasy catcher. As short as this moment may be, I’m leading my league right now!
Dammit....
It took me until today to discover that the crew is playing opening day in San Francisco. On top of that, my car is about to die, so even if I wanted to go I probably can’t.
Maybe I can get my car all fixed up for Wednesday night and start work super-early to get done in time to go there for game 2 (better pitching matchups, unlikely to be sold out).
Haha
If there’s one pitcher I enjoy watching get shelled, it’s Myers.
Well done by Schaefer, by the way!
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
the wonderful ESPN announcing
The PBP guy confused Jordan and Logan Schafer. As much as we are high on Logan around here he is not playing CF for Atlanta.
(Are they brothers?)
I owe you a Coke
No, they are not brothers.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
random diversion
“Schäfer” is apparently the 11th-most common surname here (surprise for me, I would have figured a little lower, 20s or so), so I imagine there are lots of descendents of German immigrants named Schafer, even accounting for different anglicizations of the name.
Jon Miller just called Jordan Schafer "Logan" several times
Cal Poly fan?

Braun getting some fellatio from Joe

Holy crap, Joe Morgan gets leverage.
He just completely explained why the concept of a closer doesn’t work, and sometimes the most important relief inning is the 8th.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I may be too used to Joe
I don’t mind him so much tonight, aside from the customary name-dropping. He’s definitely the least bad of the 3 in the booth.

He's been significantly better than I expected.
He didn’t even go off on a rant when Jon Miller provoked him by mentioning OPS in the first inning.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Steve Phillips was saying the same thing today when Putz worked through the heart of the Reds' order in the 8th
Must have been an internal ESPN memo to quit being such idiots.

D-Lowe
Boy, he would have looked good in a Brewer uniform. If only he had wanted to play here, and Melvin had thought he was worth what he was asking for…
He'll likely be worth his contract in 2009.
It’s 2011 and 2012, when he’ll pocket $24m, that I’m not convinced about.
