Game Thread #1: Brewers (0-0) at Giants (0-0)
It has been 190 days since the Brewers finished the 2008 regular season.
183 days since their elimination from postseason play.
52 days since pitchers and catchers reported to spring training.
21 days since I last broke out the Rally Lobster.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to regular season baseball!
...weather permitting, of course.
It's raining in San Francisco right now, but the hour by hour forecast suggests a brief window between 1 and 4 pm Pacific time where the chance of rain decreases from 100% to around 20-40%, giving the Brewers and Giants an opportunity to get today's game in.
For the Brewers, Jeff Suppan takes the mound for his fourth career Opening Day start. Suppan is 22-22 in his two seasons as a Brewer and has posted an ERA of 4.78.
For the Giants, it's 2008 NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum. In 373 major league innings he's posted an ERA of 3.16, and finished in the top three in the NL in ERA, Wins, Hits/9, K/9, IP, strikeouts, HR/9 and ERA+ last season.
Via the JS, here are the lineups for both teams:
First, for the Brewers:
2B Rickie Weeks
RF Corey Hart
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
SS J.J. Hardy
CF Mike Cameron
3B Bill Hall
C Jason Kendall
RHP Jeff Suppan
And for the Giants:
RF Randy Winn
SS Edgar Renteria
LF Fred Lewis
C Bengie Molina
3B Pablo Sandoval
1B Travis Ishikawa
CF Aaron Rowand
2B Emmanuel Burriss
RHP Tim Lincecum
Game Thread #1 is now open.

Can't believe you didn't mention this is a must win
The team is already .5 games behind the Cubs. A loss today combined with a Cubs win would produce an insurmountable lead, and I think the Cubs’ magic number would be -12. A Cubs win combined with a Brewer rainout would have them back 1 full game with 162 to go, so clearly this is not only a must win but a must play!
by Getting Yosted on Apr 7, 2009 1:57 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
If the game is rained out, what are the odds they don't make it up this series?
Taking a look at the 2009 schedule, the Brewers don’t go to SF again this year, but they do have a West Coast swing in early August with an off day August 6th. It looks like SF plays an early game in HOU August 5th, and then they start a home stand August 7th and they also have an off day August 6th.
Just asking, what are the odds they just reschedule that game for August 6th rather than play a double header to open 2009?
I miss the slide, the balloons, and the giant beer mug. :(
by Adam P on Apr 7, 2009 1:58 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I can't imagine either team really wants that
Also, the Giants don’t have a day off between July 17th and Aug 5. If they played on the 6th, that would be more than 20 days w/o a day off, and MLB needs union approval (or something like that) to schedule a game under those circumstances.
Also, cheese.

If the weather tomorrow permits, I imagine they'll play it then
Both Haudricourt and McCalvy were saying that talk of a doubleheader was already going around yesterday.

Best case scenario
what if the game starts on time and then there is a 2 hour rain delay in the second inning? We lose out on a Suppan “quality” start, and the Giants would have to pull Lincecum. I like watching Lincecum pitch as much as the next guy but we need every edge we can get in this “must win” game.
