Game Thread #3: Brewers (1-1) at Giants (1-1)

Milwaukee Brewers at San Francisco Giants, Apr 9, 2009 6:05 PM CDT

The Brewers are now 0-1 on days when Jeff Suppan starts and undefeated in all other games. Today, they'll look to keep that streak alive as they wrap up their series with the Giants.

For the Brewers, it's Manuel Alex "Manny" Parra's turn. Parra posted a 4.94 ERA in 23.2 innings this spring, and a 4.39 ERA in 166 innings last season. He's never lost to the Giants, going 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA. He is, however, a significantly worse pitcher on the road in his career, posting a 3.44 ERA at Miller Park and a 5.40 ERA on the road.

For the Giants, it's Matthew T. "Matt" Cain, a man so mysterious Baseball Reference doesn't even know his full middle name. He threw 32.1 innings this spring, leading the San Francisco nine, and posted a 5.57 ERA. He's posted 417 innings and a sub-4 ERA for the Giants over the last two years, but the Giants offense has failed him consistently and saddled him with a 15-30 record. The Brewers have seen him twice in his career and given him a 5.54 ERA in two no-decisions.

Game time is at 6:05 Central time from San Francisco, and will be broadcast on the MLB Network, as well at WTMJ.

Thursday's Game Thread is now open.

Hmmm...

An even trade, I suppose. Corey Hart is out of the 2 spot, but Craig Counsell, about my third choice to play third base, is starting and hitting there.

is this

the bill hall lefty-righty platoon. Or did he strain an oblique while throwing from his knees, or why is he out?

by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 9, 2009 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

No reason given.

In fact, with McGehee on the bench, giving Counsell the first bench start at third is borderline baffling.

Either the Brewers are worse than I expected

Or the Giants are a little better than I thought they’d be. Seems like they have some decent young talent.

by warwick5s on Apr 9, 2009 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

It's true.

If you had told me that the Brewers would score runs against both Lincecum and Johnson, I would have told you I expect them to be 2-0.

With that said, all that young talent didn’t amount to much offensively last night.

Being negative is allowed, as long as it's not based on this little action.

I’m negative on Hart based on his piss-poor attitude, entire second half last year AND his crappy 2009 performance. That’s sample size enough for me.

Not to be that guy...

… but it’s always a lot nicer when the season starts with a couple of series wins. That helps build up my resistance when the inevitable down slide begins. It’s harder to maintain perspective when it goes the other way.

Sort of glad I opted for church tonight, though I was sorely tempted to watch the game since I missed the first two of the season.
