Minor League Notes - 04/30/2009

I got up this morning, checked BCB, and didn't see any Minor League Notes. I thought to myself, "That's a drag, I guess I'll check back later." Then I remembered that I do the Minor League Notes now.

Jeffress

Rough night for Jeffress. But as long as his struggles are not physical (i.e. that he is still bringing it in the mid to upper 90s), I don’t think there is any real cause for concern. I didn’t expect to see him in MKE before 2011 anyway.

the more numbers I see from Jeffress

The more likely it seems to me he may not make it to the bigs… with the idea there is no such thing as a pitching prospect, he may just get roughed up in the minors and never bring everything together that is necessary to make it to the next level.

Still only has 240 or so IP in the minors, but I don’t know if he will translate to a big leaguer as many here probably assume because he is on the top of our lists in all the rankings.

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

I don't know much about Jeffress

Is he highly touted because he throws upper 90s, or does he have really good stuff?

he's still awfully young.

there are very, very few flamethrowing high school draftees who don’t have struggles like this, especially with control. The guy is 21, pitching in Double-A, and he’s striking out 12 per 9. This is really his only awful outing; the others have looked more mediocre because he’s been on a short-ish pitch count and only pitching 4 innings.

Also, cheese.

Assuming he doesn't get injured, he'll at least make the big leagues as a reliever

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

Go Amaury Rivas!

Given his age, he should be in line for a promotion to Huntsville if he keeps this up.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

More recognition of Anundsen (I guess a no-hitter will do that for you)

He was #8 on Baseball America’s Hot Sheet:

A Brewers fourth-round pick from Columbine High in Littleton, Colo., in 2006, Anundsen could be on his way to a break out season. He certainly put himself on the radar after firing the season’s first nine inning no-hitter Tuesday against Daytona. Anundsen relies on a sinking mid-80s fastball, which he uses to get opponents to beat into the ground, and has had spectacular results so far. He went only 12-8, 4.28 last year in low Class A in his first year of full-season ball, but he’s off to a 2-2, 1.44 start through four outings for Brevard County.

Caleb Gindl was #13:

Gindl tended to get lost in the shuffle among all the talented teenagers in the South Atlantic League last season, but he put up a strong year of his own in hitting .307/.388/.474 (including .344/.417/.535 in the second half) as a 19-year-old in his first full season. This year, Gindl has picked up where he left off, despite now finding himself in the pitching-oriented FSL. He’s started cutting down on his strikeouts after racking up 144 last year, and has continued producing at a high rate, hitting .380/.446/.563 through 71 at-bats. He had a six-game hitting streak snapped yesterday, but has driven in at least one run in eight of his last 10 games.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

I'm still not sure I like the decision to use McClendon as a reliever...

but you can’t argue with the results, I guess, tough-luck loss yesterday notwithstanding.
