Dave Bush and No-Decisions
If you've looked at the won-loss records of the team's pitching staff lately, you may have noticed Dave Bush sits at 1-0 in the middle of May. He's been in the #5 spot of the rotation all year, with an Opening Day relief appearance added for good measure. His only win this year came in his only start that didn't ultimately wind up as a one-run game. In his other five starts, he was the victim of bullpen struggles, his famous one big inning at an inopportune time, or just ineffective pitching from the get-go. Heading into his start on Thursday, he's sitting at 40 innings pitched this year with just one decision to show for it. How does that compare to others around the league with zero or one decisions so far in 2009?
- Dave Bush, MIL, 1-0, 7 G, 6 GS, 40 IP, 4.05 ERA
- Josh Geer, SDP, 0-1, 5 G, 4 GS, 28 IP, 5.14 ERA
- Chan Ho Park, PHI, 0-1, 6 G, 5 GS, 27 IP, 6.67 ERA
- Lance Cormier, TBR, 0-0, 12 G, 0 GS, 25.1 IP, 2.49 ERA
- D.J. Carrasco, CHW, 0-0, 12 G, 0 GS, 23 IP, 3.13 ERA
- Brad Bergesen, BAL, 1-0, 4 G, 4 GS, 21.2 IP, 4.98 ERA
- Josh Outman, OAK, 0-0, 6 G, 4 GS, 20.2 IP, 4.79 ERA
- Ramon Troncoso, LAD, 0-0, 12 G, 0 GS, 20.1 IP, 2.21 ERA
- Jason Hammel, COL, 0-1, 6 G, 3 GS, 20 IP, 5.40 ERA
No doubt Bush will start getting more decisions as the year goes on, but for right now he holds the dubious title of Mr. Indecisive.

Chan Ho Park has done well
to only lose 1 game with those crappy numbers in 5 starts.
Also Bush is consistantly pitching 6inns+ judging by those figures – not bad for the “5th” starter
At least he hit a home run
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Is he worth a contract
Is Dave Bush worth signing to a 3-4 year deal. He has one year of arbitration left. I personally have no qualms about signing him to a deal worth 6M or so for 3-4 years, but as you can tell by my name, I may not be the best person to run a team….

The only problem with longer term deals at the moment
Is that teams maybe a little uncertain about what money is likely to be coming in from fans, sponsers etc. In fact Brewers might be in a better position than alot of other teams if the attendence figures stay healthy and assuming that the new TV deal gives the Crew more money.
Putting that to aside for the moment, I would have no problem with the sort of deal that you have proposed. Basically Bush is atleast as good as Looper, who will get a similar amount over 1-2 years and I don’t think anybody thought that contract was particulary good or bad.
I suppose it depends on how many of the other players at similar stage in their arbitration that the Brewers want to keep.
I was going to ask this too
If he keeps pitching relatively well throughout this season, what are the chances he gets offered a contract? He’s been pretty solid for an “innings eater” and I’m pretty sure most people here wouldn’t mind having him around for another few years.

sign him
I don’t think you’ll find too may #5 starters with WHIPs of a little over 1 and a fair number of strikeouts (he’s not as pitch-to-contact as people seem to think). He gives up hits but has gotten more ground balls in each of the last five years and his OBA has gone down as well. If Weeks continues to improve on defense (or JJ replaces him next year when Escobar comes up) that will improve more, maybe markedly.I think that’s the definition of a #5 starter for any team not playing home games in NY, BOS, CHI or LA.
