Brewers sign Catalanotto
Should be a good bench bat, for once....someone to PH for Kendall
EDIT: From Rotoworld:
Catalanotto will report to extended spring training, get his legs under him then join the Brewers' Double- or Triple-A team. He could hit the majors around June 1 and give the Brewers the lefty bat they need. He figures to serve as a backup outfielder and pinch-hitter, possibly deposing Brad Nelson (0-20 on the season).

It would be kind of amusing if he went 10 for 10 over that stretch
I can read the articles about how he was inspired by the competition already.

he was still wrong
Catalanotto isn’t exactly a replacement for Counsell. For Nelson on the other hand…yes.
Congrats to Camclow
I can’t seem to recall a time that I was 2 months prescient on a Brewers transaction.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
His wikipedia page tells me his nickname is
Alright- I look forward to pictures of cute cats in game threads later this summer!
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Since it will be for league minimum
Not a bad guy to have to pitch hit and occasionally play the outfield. I wonder if the Brewers will be able to get anything for Nelson or would he clear waivers? (assuming that he is the one to be replaced).
Good question
I’m assuming Nelson would clear waivers and could report back to Nashville, right?
He didn’t exactly put up great minor league numbers post-A ball until last year and is limited defensively. I’m struggling to come up with a team that would want him on their 25 man roster,
Jack Z obviously comes to mind but since they already have Branyan I don’t know what they would do with Nelson.
Haven't the Brewers run out of options for Nelson?
I remember having this discussion during a game when he went 0-97 or something. Basically, they keep him, or waive him outright. They can’t send him down to the minors, even if we waive him, from my understanding. Someone can edumacate me on this, though. XD
He's out of options, but that doesn't mean they can't send him to the minors
He just has to be removed from the 40-man roster (“designated for assignment”) and pass through waivers first. If no other team claims him when he’s on waivers, the Brewers then have ten days to trade him, release him, or assign him to the minors (“outrighting”).
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Aaah...
Thanks for the clarification. ^_^v Especially with outrighting (to me, outrighting meant “waive bye bye from the organization”. Dman confusion).
He can refuse to go to the minors if he's DFA'd and not claimed, correct?
Not that I expect he would, mind you, since he isn’t likely to sign a big contract with another team, but he does have that option, right?
A player can refuse the assignment if he has >3 years service time, which Nelson does not

Or if it's not the first time, IIRC.
I seem to recall that Nelson was booted off the 40-man roster once before, but he wasn’t on the 25-man roster at the time, so I guess that doesn’t count. (Or does it?)
You're right
He had been DFA’d and outrighted once before, which I had forgotten about, but which is obvious given his optionless status and relatively recent addition to the 40-man. It still counts, even if he wasn’t on the 25-man, so yeah, he could refuse an assignment, though I don’t see any reason why he would. Good catch, as usual.

You can elect free agency if you've been outrighted before
In Article XX(D) of the CBA:
(2) Election of Free Agency-Second Outright Assignment
Any Player whose contract is assigned outright to a Minor League club for the second time or any subsequent time in his career may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such Player does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current Major League season and the next following October 15, unless such Player is returned to a Major League roster prior to making such election.
Nelson was outrighted to Huntsville in June 2006.

Chris Mabeus! Allan Simpson! Joe Winkelsas!
I think I’d blocked that 2006 season from memory altogether, thank you very much…

Doug Melvin’s most cherished memory.

Chris Demaria is the real jolt for me
Mabeus was at the center of another rules intricacy after the Brewers claimed him off waivers and then tried to recall him from the minors a few days later, only to be told that he ephemerally passed through the Major League roster when claimed and thus could not be recalled for ten days, despite the fact that he had yet to make his big league debut.

I hate it when broadcasters/reporters synonomize "outright" with "option"

Why would he still be unsigned?
Does he have an injury history? He doesn’t really have any power to speak of, but his other numbers are really pretty good over the last 3 seasons.
I can understand not wanting to sign him to a long-term deal for his age, but why is he still on the market? Were the Brewers in the right place at the right time when he settled for a 1 year deal?
I don't get it
Well, I get it in that he’s a former Ranger and a capable hitter and all of those important things. But why another lefty? Why not a right handed hitter to give the option of someone other than McGehee (Macha won’t use Rivera) in case a lefty is on the mound?

Doug ran a search
but the number of right-handed-hitting former Rangers on the free agent market is zero.
Also, cheese.

are you sure?
there are probably a few that have “retired” that doug might be able to get away with offering a few million to.
Is Palmeiro a righty? He needs to rebuild his image after the whole BALCO thing, so maybe he’d sign on the cheap.

Nonsense!
Kevin Mench isn’t on this continent! :)

Andruw Jones will be a former Ranger just as soon as we trade for him

I think he's just replacing Nelson and keeping the status quo
Plus, it sounds like Hall is gonna be coming off the bench a fair amount.

Nelson is having a rough start...
These things happen with bench bats. I’d like to see him get a few consistent at bats… get him in any games where we have a big lead/deficit and see what we have. Get him 10 ABs in a week before we conclude that he sucks.
Agreed
He’s been with the organization long enough to give him the benefit of the doubt.

How much does move like this come from Macha?
Does he tell Melvin I need a left hand hitting OF because I dont like/trust/want to use Nelson off the bench. Or is this Doug looking around for any player ex-Ranger than he can sign and help the team
I don't know, but Doug certainly didn't sound thrilled with Nelson the other day

Frank Catalanatto was destined to be a Brewer
I’ve heard his name rumored since like 2005.

Called it!
Haven’t been on for a while, but I just had to come and let everyone know that I called that one a while ago. Call it luck, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while!
