SB Nation Coverage
And with that, for the first time all season, the Brewers have swept a team that was not the Pirates.
The Brewers won in come-from-behind fashion for the third consecutive day, as the Marlins took a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the second inning, but the Brewers responded with two in the bottom half on a home run from Bill Hall and didn't trail the rest of the way. Prince Fielder's solo home run in the fifth gave the Brewers the lead for good.
Dave Bush bent but didn't break today, allowing single runs in the second, fourth and fifth (one unearned). All told, he pitched seven innings, allowed six hits and a walk, and struck out seven. Mark DiFelice pitched a perfect eighth and Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his third save in as many days.
Mike Rivera returned from the DL today and went 2-for-3 before being replaced by Jason Kendall in the eighth. Mat Gamel got his first at bat of the season in the eighth and struck out.

Has anyone gotten a hit off hoffman?
I know he walked someone once but…wow
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.

I'm so impressed with Hoffman
seems like everyone licks his chops to face him, seeing as how he doesn’t throw anything particularly fast or nasty, but every 9th has been a calm and efficient killing
perhaps…hoffman is a ninja?

he always seems to be one step ahead of the hitter
which is exactly how a 40+ year old pitcher can still do well

Who is this Hoffman guy, anyway?
He’s pretty good.
It's called "playing the percentages."

Supposedly he’s closed a few games before. Who knew?

Nelson could have struck out too...
Just saying. I under stand why Gamel was brought up… but I don’t like that Nelson is getting trashed…

Me either.
And given the rough start and trashing he received, I would not be at all surprised to see him accept free agency and look for a fresh start somewhere else.

if no one claimed him, I doubt he would take FA
I think it could work out for Gamel and Nelson. Nelson could use some consistent ABs. Gamel can get his proverbial feet wet. They’ll swap back within a month (unless Gamel is crazy hot).

Catalanatto
Gamel’s spot will presumably go to Catalanatto.

He might accept the assignment
Try and hit well at AAA and force the Brewers to either add him to the 40-man again or allow him to elect FA after the year.

I'll be curious to see if Macha discusses the decision
to use Hoffman 3 consecutive days in the post-game conference. I assume this means he’s not available tomorrow @ StL.
by Brew Angel on May 14, 2009 2:48 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well
He honestly hasn’t had to work very hard, I don’t know that he’s thrown over 20 pitches in any of his outings. That said, any pitcher who pitches 3 games in a row is normally considered unavailable the following day, or two.

His next outing will take 17 pitches
Can he throw 17 pitches tomorrow, or should he rest a day?

It's true.
Even Villanueva got a day off today.

Awesome formatting
Conclusion. Never more than 17 pitches twice. Next high is 13. Insane robot-style pitching.

I'm not saying I disagree with the decision
It was a 2-run game, and the 4-5-6 hitters were coming up. I also agree that he didn’t have to throw a lot of pitches in Tuesday or Wednesday’s games. And there’s no guarantee that we’ll be in a save situation tomorrow, anyway. It’s just that I recall Macha previously saying something about not using Hoffman more than 2 consecutive days. That may have been because he was coming back from the ribcage/oblique/intracostal injury, and Macha wanted to ease him into it. I’m just wondering if he’ll talk about it, and if so, what he’ll say.

Hoffman won't be available tomorrow
But Gallardo is pitching and Villanueva is there. I don’t think it was a bad decision to go ahead and nail this one down with Hoffman.
Maybe tomorrow it will be close, or maybe we will be up/down by 5 runs. Just gotta take the one that is in front of you.

McClung & Julio...
Are also available on…too many days rest in my opinion.

There's no such thing as too many days rest for Jorge Julio.

Maybe Hoolio just is best on 5 days rest.
He likes to pretend he’s a starting pitcher.

McClung gets dreadfully rusty if he doesn't work every 3-5 days
He should have pitched the 8th and DiFelice could have closed—he can do what he does in the 8th in the 9th—and Hoffman could have been available for tomorrow, but now he’s gone and pitched three days in a row. Whoops.
by morineko on May 14, 2009 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
McClung hasn't pitched in 5 days
So if he’s rusty, I’d rather he pitches with a bigger lead.

what ranking?
but yeah, he’s #1 with +5 UZR so far, if that’s what you’re talking about. It constantly updates.

I mentioned it in yesterday’s mug, but both Weeks and Cameron are the best at their positions according to UZR. So good that the team is rated best in the National league, and second best in baseball.
