Surprised Gamel was called up?
I follow the Nashville Sounds very closely, blogging several times a day usually (attheoldballgame.com).
Honestly, I was surprised the Brewers called Mat Gamel up, albeit, mainly to pitch-hit.
Even though he started off on a torrid pace in April (as did Jake Fox), in his past ten games - which is one-third of his Minor League season so far - he is just batting .230.
I go into much more detail on this post: http://attheoldballgame.wordpress.com/2009/05/14/gamel-gets-call/
I can understand wanting to see if Gamel's bat would be any better than Nelson's has been but I'd not have the highest expectations for Gamel's bat right now.
I see he went 0-1 in a pinch-hit role today -striking out.
I wish him well though.

Tony Gwynn Jr and Hernan Iribarren
May be tearing it up in AAA, but TG jr has demonstrated completely cluelessness at the major league level, both in starts and off the bench. Iribarren has been even more of a disappointment, even though I don’t believe he’s seen any starts. For all of his excellence as a baserunner, he managed to get picked off base.
I’m surprised that they didn’t leave things as-is and stick with Nelson for a bit longer. That being said, I didn’t see any pinch hitting situations where I actually liked him, because he had thusfar been hitless. As to Escobar: JJ’s been flashing leather and hasn’t been performing abysmally with the bat (despite a high GIDP rate), so there’s really no room for a pure shortstop on the club right now. And no demotable pitcher has been performing poorly enough to send down to make room for a AAA pitcher. So, really, they made the only move they could.
I agree...
I think. If I’m reading you right. I’m certainly not surprised that Gamel was the first guy to get the call out of Nashville, and I doubt many are. I am surprised by the timing. I don’t really understand the idea of having him get pinch hit appearances for the next 8 days while he waits for interleague play. I guess I would have rather seen him play everyday at Nashville until we reached the point in the schedule where he was likely to see action (and more than pinch hitting) on a daily basis. Nelson’s struggles are well known and beyond debate, but I’m not sure that Gamel will do much better in that role the next few days. Missing a week of daily play in the field isn’t going to ritard his development, of course, but the only justification I can see for calling him up now instead of in a week is to allow him to acclimate himself a bit before throwing him out against major league pitching. Maybe that’s reason enough to do so (I’m not in a position to know), but I was hoping that Nelson would get a few more at bats to break loose before we ran the risk of losing him for good.

Warming the bench for the Cat
I think Catalanotto will be called up in the summer at some point. But Gamel will provide a better option than B. Nelson at this point. Someone here at work mentioned today that Gamel will be the DH during interleague play starting next month.
I agree with Pags. There isn’t many other better options.
LET'S GO HAWKS!
I Disagree
Catalanotto would not make a good power bat coming off the bench, which is the role that Nelson filled and Gamel is currently filling. He’s not a power hitter. He’s a slightly (4 years) younger version of Craig Counsell. I think Catalanotto was picked up to fill Gamel’s spot in AAA while he’s in Milwaukee for interleague play. I’m not saying it’s impossible for him to make it to the majors, but if he does, I see it happening because McGehee is struggling….or if Nelson elects to become a FA. I don’t think Neslon will choose that path though, and will report to Nashville and take the next month or so to regain his confidence before Gamel is shipped back to Nashville when interleague is over. Of course, an injury would throw all of those theories completely out the window.

well
he certainly wasn’t the hit-for-average guy off the bench;)

I'm a little confused, too
If they wanted to bring him up for interleague play, why wouldn’t they have just waited a week, and given him more regular at bats?
We might have it backwards
Maybe Gamel wasn’t called up as much as Nelson was sent down.
Nelson has got to be pressing and maybe he just needs to go back to AAA and get his feet back under him and restore his confidence. If they decided to send him down, it makes sense to just go ahead and call up Gamel a little early.
I think the extra week will give Svuem a little more time to work with him. Its only a week early, I don’t have a problem with it.
How about this?
Maybe they wanted him to get the jitters out before Minnesota next week? Maybe they dind’t want to bring the guy up and just throw him into his first major league start. Get him a few ABs first.
IDK Every other reason I think of seems just a little bit strange.
Already said it. (See above.)
Care to recant now that you appear to agree with the likes of myself? :)
