You'd be excused for being skeptical that Jeff Suppan would shut out, if not exactly shut down, any lineup for seven innings, especially a lineup featuring Albert Pujols, but it happened. Pujols just missed a hanging curve from Suppan in the first inning with a runner on, but in general Soup pitched admirably.
At the plate, Corey Hart hit a solo homer off Adam Wainwright in the second inning; little did we know that it would be the only run scored by either team. Wainwright was excellent, allowing just three baserunners apart from the base-trotter over eight innings.
Aside from Hart's homer, the key play in the game came as Suppan was trying to gut out the bottom of the 7th. After two-out singles by 8th-hitting Joe Thurston and Wainwright put runners on the corners, Skip Schumaker hit a hot grounder that J.J. Hardy speared in the hole, throwing to second to force Wainwright and end the inning. Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect 9th for his ninth save.

Don’t make Suppan’s contract seem so bad. Then you remember there are 110 other starts under that contract.

I scared some old lady to death in the bottom of the 9th
I was listening on my Iphone(praise be to the MLB app) and when they got the last out I let out a little too loud “Yesssssssssssss”
I think she damn near had a grabber right there oops that would have been awkward to say the least
Any day they win when Suppon starts is a great day how well he pitched was the cherry on top of all the extra chocolate syrup and cake.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM cake

I've begun thinking winning one out of Suppan & Parra's starts is a good trip through the rotation

They really, really want it bad.

THROW AT HIM tomorrow. Put him on the DL.
(Brenly sarcasm)
It's funny
because he clapped and it wasn’t guaranteed to score a run. A good throw from right field definitely would have gotten Bobby Scales at the plate.

The chances for win #299 aren’t looking so good right now.

He just gave up a hit to Johan Santana
Santana joins Seth McClung (and Wayne “Traded For Carlos Villanueva” Franklin) as one of just 10 lefty-hitting pitchers to ever get a hit off Johnson. Such pitchers have a career line of .087/.152/.110 off Johnson.

I added a link to the mlb.com video highlights from the game and also linked the mentions of the individual plays in the recap to the appropriate highlight. Good idea?

It goes without saying
but how about the job DiFelice has done? How did we acquire this guy again? I know he was starting in Nashville, but he didn’t come up in our system…

I'm really liking how the pen has situated itself
Hoffman closing with DiFelice and Coffey for setup / high leverage is awesome.
How much longer do we have him? What do you guys see for the future on him…closer next year? Starter?
yes, hoffman to starter!
i assume you’re talking about DiFelice though?

whatever happened to the tradition
of congratulating the other team on a good game, youth sports style? Has that NEVER existed in professional baseball, or is it just a recent trend? I’ve only been paying attention the past 3-5 years or so.

I noticed it a couple years ago, as well.
I guess I always just assumed that both teams went to the field to shake hands after the game.
Missed Selig by 1 semester
He gave the commencement speech to UW-Madison, too bad I screwed up my graduation plan and have to take an extra semester next year. Maybe Uecker will give it next winter, that’d be pretty awesome.
i would have skipped commencement
if Selig was the keynote.

He brought himself to the ceremony
But he didn’t give enough words to take the speech anywhere. He also turned his cheek to the group of graduates that were holding signs saying “I copied off of the smart kids”
Just took a moment to read todays thread at Viva El Birdos
So far no complaints about the untucked shirts.
They are in serious pain over being diced and sliced by one Jeff Suppon can’t say I blame them, that has to sting.
All and all I still have to say Cards fans have more class in their little toes than Cubs fans have in their entire body ;)

Agreed
That’s one reason why this rivalry will never be on the level of the Cubs rivalry. Distance is another factor. I believe they took the cards games off of the marquee games list.
yep, it's just for white sox and cubs games now
so i propose they change the name to “fib tax”

Not so fast...
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
I saw that I actually thought I left a good post over there.

if you can’t tell that it’s classless, tacky
and disrespects not only the great game they get to play, but the team they just beat. then sir, no one here can help you

I don't get that
It bothers us, no one here has the intelligence to explain why and we’re proud of that fact isn’t a comment you expect of the ‘best’ fans in baseball. But what do I know, I’m sitting here with my shirt untucked right now. I’m also not wearing shoes.

I'm glad it's in their heads
I hope the Cards players are as bothered by it during the game.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Watch the replay of the eighth inning. I’m almost positive Pujols says ‘Untuck this!’ just as he swung to fly out to Braun.
On a related note, I was at a Little League game today and one of the pitchers had his shirt untucked while he was pitching! Can you believe that?!?!?!? Next week I’m wearing a Cardinals hat and screaming in incoherent rage at the kid if he tries that shit again. Disrespecting the great game he’s playing just will not be tolerated.

The whole controversy is ridiculus
What???? A team has a unique tradition that it performs after each win? Unique is different and different is scary, because apparently in Missouri people don’t take kindly to different people.
They may have a point if instead of untucking jerseys they would all turn and stare into the losing teams dugout and simultaneously spit on the ground.
Mariners
Ken Griffey Jr and the Mariners once started a game with their shirts untucked and their hats backwards. Eventually the ump made them tuck in the shirts after a HBP that the opposing manager said was caused by the untucked shirt.
I still respect Ken Griffey Jr for some reason even though he obviously doesn’t respect the game!
The Cardinal’s complaints are completely based on a team that was always easy for them to beat finally becoming a challenge and them looking for something to complain about. If the Pirates untucked their shirts after a win they could care less, if we weren’t better than their team they wouldn’t care either.
You can add "Jeff Suppan won a 1 - 0 pitcher's duel for the Brewers today"
To the list of sentences I never thought I’d say.
Keep proving me wrong Soup, keep proving me wrong!
the best quote
the "explanation" they’ve given is bullshit. They do it to show up their opponents, period. It’s disrespectful, period. The fact that they lie about why they do it just serves to further illustrate their lack of character.
Yes, the team lies in order to cover up their dastardly gloating!

I also like the one where the guy makes fun of the players for acting like they have jobs.
I like the fact that my favorite team’s players treat baseball like a job. They know they get paid to win. They’re happy when they win; they aren’t happy when they don’t.
