Weeks to see wrist specialist
Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks is off to see a wrist specialist, which is not a good sign.
"I felt a little pressure, a little tug," said Weeks, referring to the swing in which he struck out against Todd Wellemeyer. "I'm going to get it checked out. We'll see what happens.
"It's an injury. That's all I'm going to say."

This sucks
So assuming Weeks has to hit the DL, does Counsell become the starting 2B and Gamel and Hall platoon at third, or does Iribarren get called up?
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
I guess Iribarren is probably getting called up either way
But I wonder if the playing time will go to him or to Gamel.

If memory serves
Iribarren has had very little success in the majors, albeit with a very small sample. Brad Nelson, anyone?
I’d almost like to see someone else called up; would be nice to see McGehee get some playing time.
Well, it's not a given he'll go on the DL yet.
I mean, yes, he’s going to see a specialist, but if a specialist says “You’ll be fine in a week,” there’s no guarantee any roster move would be made.
I’m assuming this means Counsell moves to second in the short term, and Hall returns to near full time play at third. As for the call up (if there is one), Iribarren makes sense as someone who can play multiple positions, but I don’t know if he’s significantly better than McGehee. Don’t be surprised if the callup is Jason Bourgeois, who’s hitting .323/.385/.404 and could play second along with all three outfield spots, bringing the roster back up to five outfielders.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
the thing is
if they’re already sending him out to see a specialist, it’s probably serious enough where he knew he did some damage. They wouldn’t send him across the country for soreness. His “it’s an injury” comment sounds pretty ominous to me, unfortunately. I hope it’s not a big deal, but usually you’ll hear guys say something like, “It’s a little tight, I’ll be fine in a few days.”
Look, I know you love Casey McGehee
But it’s quite obvious the team considers him just a defensive replacement. I’m not predicting Weeks will be DL’d, just talking about what would be the play if he is, and starting McGehee is not going to be that play. Iribarren can play the outfield, too .
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Right
This has nothing to do with my like or dislike of McGehee. And I don’t think McGehee will get any significant time out of this. Here’s my point, broken down differently.
1) I think Counsell is the everyday second baseman until Weeks returns.
2) I think Bill Hall will get nearly all of the playing time at third while Counsell is playing second.
3) McGehee will get the playing time if either of them are removed from a game. Maybe once a week, if that. Probably less.
Now, if all of that is true, it doesn’t make sense to bring Iribarren up, because he’s basically the same thing as McGehee – a low upside hitter who plays several infield positions. Having McGehee and Iribarren on the bench would be redundant.
Bourgeois, on the other hand, could be a better hitter and gives the Brewers an extra outfielder on the bench (because, right now, Duffy is it). So I think it makes more sense to call him up.

Bourgeois
If he’s going to slide into McGehee’s current role as 25th man, why does it matter how well he hits? He’s not going to be hitting anyway. Iribarren can play outfield as well and has the advantage of already being on the 40-man roster.

Bill Hall
…can play OF (including CF) in a pinch..as long as he stretches before hand so he doesn’t hurt his hammy again.
I agree with KL’s 1-3 as well. Counsell has had a hot bat so far this year…it would be silly to not play him everyday at 2nd until Weeks is back…or until Craig proves he shouldn’t be starting there.

Hall could play some 2B
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
it sucks Weeks is done for the year now!
Sad day
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Well its his left wrist
and the previous injury was to the right one, which I suppose is a good sign. Usually reaggrivations of previous injuries are more serious.
I am not pleased by this news.
No way, No how.
And his season was starting off so positively…

If it comes to a DL stint...
let’s not forget the guy who stormed through Spring Training, Casey McGehee.
Granted, I would really like to see Gamel, but I think the trio of Counsell, Hall, and McGehee can do their part in the mean time.
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
McCalvy's blog
Craig Counsell moved from third base to second and Bill Hall entered the game as the third baseman.
Both of those players could be back in the lineup on Monday because Weeks will not be back in time for the finale of a rain-altered, three-game series. He will probably re-join the Brewers on Tuesday in Houston, unless Sheridan suggests an alternate course.

Hopefully it’s just a matter of Weeks wanting to see someone he’s had treatment from before.

Defensive issues
I would just assume have Craig play 2b and leave Bill at 3rd. I know Gamel can hit but I like the way “Craig for MVP” is playing at the plate and in the field. I like bringing up Herman also. Though he did not get the hits last year Herman seemed to always have good at bats
slight correction
it’s Hernan.
yes, Bill Hall is excellent defensively this year at third. his offensive prowess leaves something to be desired, but he’d take a larger falloff in defensive ability going to second than the upswing for Counsell from second to third.
I’d wager on Counsell and Hall on Monday, with McGehee and Gamel getting chances in the next series until Weeks is back.

who will leadoff in the meantime? cc?
Frye is honestly gotta be one of the top 10 3rd Stringers in all of the NFL right now--colbyb
I'm sure CC will hit #1 or #2.
he’s our best hitter…so unless they choose to “protect” fielder by putting counsell in the 5 hole, I’d bet on #1

i love the thought
of counsell “protecting” fielder…he IS the best clean player of the steroid era after all

Hart might lead off
He’s led off a couple games this year.

Awful news
Hopefully this doesn’t mean that the Rickie Weeks Breakout Season™ has eluded us yet another year.
Not to mention the fact that a wrist injury is not a good thing to have for a professional baseball player…
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Damn
I’m going with yes
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
No It's Not
A wrist injury is what kept Nelson down for so long in the minors…and what stole a lot of his power that he was finally starting to get back last season in AAA.

I think Gamel replaces Rickie as an infielder
Obviously McGahee and Counsell move to second, but there are only 4 outfielders. Too soon for Frank?
Platoon for Gamel/Hall?
Hall is current hitting a streaking .429 against LHP and only .200 against RHP, doesn’t this seem like the perfect situation to give Gamel a few starts in the lineup in the next games when we play a RHP? Getting another left handed hitter in the lineup up would be great and it would give Gamel the ABs that he hopefully needs to get going at this level? Is there any reason not to platoon him with Hall?

Gamel's Defense
Didn’t he go the last 8 or so games without an error? all i am saying is that he deserves a chance @ 3B

he's gone that long without an error
primarily because he’s been on the bench for that long;)
and the bench time is unlikely to cause his defense to improve.

I think so too,
but that’s a reason not to platoon Hall/Gamel

too much muscle?
I mentioned it during spring training, and then just yesterday Haudricourt described that weeks had, “213 pounds of solid muscle packed into his 5-foot-10 frame”. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know too many guys with those dimensions short of NFL running backs. I also hope it’s not the case, but I think we’re at a point where almost anyone can be under suspicion. Whether it’s due to old-fashioned hard work or not, ligaments and tendons in the human body may just not be made to hold up well under that kind of power.
I sure hope this is just a big precaution because Rickey was having a breakout year.
To be fair
I am 5’ 9" and around 200, and while not solid muscle, I am not by any means in bad shape. If his makeup alone is cause for suspicion, MLB is getting a bit paranoid. Of course, his ultra-fast, wristy swing is another story.
Scary
This scares me I don’t want Weeks down, this could be heart breaking especially how great Weeks is playing.
already covered
why in the hell would you do that when hall’s defense is much better than Gamel’s both at third and overall, and Counsell’s defense is better than Hall’s at second.
Hall brings little to the table offensively this season, so you could make the all-offense argument of Gamel at third and counsell at third, but due to the defensive suck that is Gamel, I’d vote for putting your two best defenders on the field in positions they’re comfortable with: namely Counsell on second and hall on third. Maybe rotate Gamel in to 3rd every 4th day or so, especially if the team has been struggling offensively of late and it’s Parra or Soup’s turn on the mound.

The scary part is the Brewers have no real option on the farm
At 2B that is close to major league ready
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
