Gamel to start tonight
From Tom H.:
As for Gamel, it looks like manager Ken Macha wants his bat at third with Counsell at second to get two left-handed bats in the lineup against Cards RHP Kyle Lohse. The gamble is Gamel's defense. It'll be interesting to see how that works out. But Bill Hall's average vs RHPs dipped to .200 yesterday.
I was just working on a post about Gamel's lack of playing time. Guess I can scrap that.

Only Two?
“As for Gamel, it looks like manager Ken Macha wants his bat at third with Counsell at second to get two left-handed bats in the lineup against Cards RHP Kyle Lohse.”
Is Fielder not starting tonight? Or does Tom not know how to count?
On a more serious note, it’ll be interesting to see how he does in the field….more so than at the plate.
I think both are pretty interesting, really.
I saw Gamel play third for the Sounds a couple of weeks ago. Obviously, one game isn’t enough for a scouting report, but it looked like the Iowa Cubs really knew that he wasn’t a good defensive third baseman and tried to take advantage of it. They had bunt singles to third in each of the first two innings.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
in defense of Haudricourt
I can’t believe I just typed those words.
Fielder is already in the lineup, Counsell and Gamel are the two non-regular-starter guys who are getting played because their left-handed. Of course, that is a bit silly anyway, since Ricky is injured.

Extra
I was assuming he either meant “get two extra” or “get two additional”, since there is always one with these moves he can… … okay yeah it was probably a gaffe =(
I predict 1-4 tonight with 2/2 on routine plays.
Excited to see, not that the weekend made a big difference in Gamel’s development, but don’t you think Melvin would have worked with Macha to get him up and have him start one of his first games, not just ride the bench the first few.
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I forgot Looper is on the mound
Who as I recall is a ground ball pitcher, might be seeing a lot of action over there Mat!

not really so happy about this
for that reason.

Maybe we can sneak Svuem or Randolph out there when no one is looking.
Seriously though, we lived through a season of Braun at the hot corner, you just have to take the bad with the good.
that seems like so long ago!
And it was only last year, wow

so much so that two years
feels like two years

Everyday players & working with Randolph
First of all – Gamel is an everyday player. Certainly, he was brought up because he was tearing it up at the plate day-in-and-day-out. However, with no regular playing time on the horizon – it seems inconceivable that he would have been brought up to be a utility player.
My theory is that he is in Milwaukee to be defensively tutored by Randolph, then inserted into the everyday lineup. I think Hall will be on the trading block sooner than later – unless he can start hitting RH-pitching or Gamel fails to improve his defense.
I think the team has been pretty clear that he’s up to DH in the upcoming interleague games, and that he will most likely be sent down after that to get regular playing time in AAA.

I disagree -
I don’ t think that they have been that clear. I think that they are leaving the door open quite a bit for him to stick around. Now, if he Nelsons it and goes 0-DH he will be back down in Nashville hours after we play our last game in an AL stadium (Detroit June 19).
There is a reason that he was brought up a week and a half before the first game in an AL stadium and DM made it sound like it was to get playing time not to get a bunch of pine pitch up his bung hole…

Excited to see what Gamel can do
But, I think his future is coming a bit earlier than I would’ve liked.
Lineup courtest of Tommy
2B Craig Counsell
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
CF Mike Cameron
RF Corey Hart
3B Mat Gamel
C Jason Kendall
RHP Braden Looper
Great –
Gritmaster K is providing ‘protection’ for Gamel…

If Corey isn’t going to lead off, then I would probably switch the two of them

Gamobar
How great would it be if we could combine Gamel’s bat and Escobar’s glove into one uber-prospect?
Mmmmmmmmmm
I want a rich, nougaty Gamobar…
