Weeks Gone For Season
General manager Doug Melvin just gave us the very bad news that second baseman Rickie Weeks is out for the season with the wrist injury he suffered Sunday.
Weeks has a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist that must be repaired surgically. The recovery time for that surgery is 4-6 months.

what a shame
it will be said many times, but he was finally getting to realize some of that potential
Well fuck
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Melvin did say that shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar would begin to get some action at second base at Nashville in the event there is another injury. But Melvin said Escobar would not be coming up now.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
With the way CC.'s been playing
It’s an easy decision. Who’s the call up then, they are going to have a roster spot open when the DL him.

Sounds like Iribarren
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
This is really really sad
Not only is the season perhaps done for the Brewers, Rickie was coming around and playing like an MVP of the team with clutch hits and improved defense.
He will be missed
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
bad for the team yes
but in reality we can cover his absence
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
Why is the season perhaps done because of this?
In our predictions at the beginning of the year, we said we would be playoff contenders. We were not expecting this kind of production from Weeks.
It hurts
But I don’t think it significantly damages their chances. Both the Cubs and Cards have experienced a variety of injuries and I don’t feel like either of those teams have the depth the Crew. I’d be curious to see if Hall gets anytime at 2nd. If Gamel is moderately successful in his big league audition I have to think shifting Hall to 2nd and having Gamel play 3rd might be the best option.

I think it does significantly damage our chances
Unless it leads to Gallardo going down next year, and trading for a top 2B to take the Brewers home, which seems likely, I don’t think the net result is more wins. I hope the Brewers can go .500 the rest of the way and sit around 87-88 wins. Maybe being too pessismistic, but you are right, last year everyone thought the year awas over when Gallardo went down
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
It's Hard To Say...
You never know what’s going to happen. Maybe Counsell steps in…and continues his level of play…Maybe Hall and Gamel platoon now (and if so, hopefully Gamel’s bat > his defense)…maybe Riske’s return will improve the bullpen…the net result may be more wins…may be less wins…may be the same amount of wins. Nobody can say for sure. You also never know, Rickie could have been due for a correction….a bad slump. We’ll never know now.
I just hope the injury doesn’t linger like it may be doing for Big Papi…he had a partial tear last year. I know it may not be all of Papi’s hitting issues, but it sure doesn’t help. Wrist injuries are esp tough on sluggers. Just hope he can recover from it without any complications.

Uh, wow.
That went from “we’re just having something checked out” to “catastrophic injury” in a hurry. What a shame, right when Rickie finally seemed to be putting it all together.
I don't know...
I thought it was going to be bad. The way Gord Ash handled it yesterday, and whatnot. The way Rickie didn’t say anything at all. Bad feeling.

You knew it was bad when he went to see the specialist immediately
What’s particularly bad is that it’s an indicator Weeks will never be able to stay healthy, that these wrist tendon injuries are endemic to his particular anatomy and play style. His hands are too quick for his own good.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
I am probably in the minority here...
But…aren’t weak tendons a sign of anabolic steroid use? He was on pace to hit about 300 HR this season.
In any case, yes he’s got a violent motion with his bat…did Gary Sheffield ever have any wrist problems that anyone can recall?

Dont want to say that either
But he was huge this year compared to years past, thought he was getting slightly fatter, but maybe it was him bulking up more, no comment on steroid use though
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
It doesn't sound as if it's a tendon issue
As much as it is the surrounding tissue. The tendon sheath is essentially a lubricated sack that surrounds the tendon, helping to reduce friction while the tendon pulls through the joint. If you’ve ever played with those fluid filled sacks that you can slide/roll onto your finger, you’ve witnessed the basic principles of the tendon sheaths.

I'm really hoping for bionic wrists.
Also, if I recall correctly, this is the same surgery he was slow to recover from last time, leading to things being said like, “it’ll be a year before he really feels 100%.” If that’s the case, then at least it happened early in 2009, so he’ll be full strength early in 2010.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I just feel terrible for RIckie Weeks
I mean I was one of his bigger critics, but it looked like he was ‘getting it’ this season. Good luck with the recovery.

This is some of the more depressing news I could imagine concerning the Brewers.
by Trent Durrington on May 18, 2009 5:25 PM CDT reply actions
We know that he's hurt
but does anyone know HOW he got hurt? Was it something new? Or, did he just re-aggrivate the injury he had in 2006? sees the ghost of Ben Sheets floating around
…and trust me, I think I said “shit” about 75 times in a row.
It wasn't a reinjury, because it was on the other wrist.
He felt something pop during a swing yesterday.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
KHAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!
This is terrible news. The year is bad enough, I just hope it doesn’t affect his career (a major injury to both wrists can’t be good, though I guess he recovered from the last one)
I really hope Counsell can continue hitting well, ugh…
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Craig is not an everyday player

I'd say the internal options
Are Counsell, Hall, McGehee, Iribarren and maybe Bourgeois, with Escobar becoming an option in a month or two.
Externally, Ray Durham is a free agent…

Cubs fan here...
had to come by and express my condolences. Rickie was always projected to be a star player and I hate seeing potential stars getting hurt. Hopefully this doesn’t ruin the rest of his career. I prefer to see all teams at full strength. It makes the season that much more exciting.
I wish you guys the best of luck.

Rec'd.
Thanks for stopping by.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I agree
I think they want it to go on the sidebar, because it will perhaps generate a lot of discussion that is vital for the brewer season… the post that Gallardo out for the year last year would be interesting to look at now… but i agree, why rec it?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Well, one could feasibly rec it because it's important.
But that’s not usually why it’s done.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Maybe it was Mr.Cub
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I hope so, BUT
I think it will remain a Hall/Gamel platoon at 3rd and now Craig will split time at 2nd with probably Iribarren. I know he only hit .143 in the bigs last year, but it was a really small sample (14 at bats). If he continues to struggle, they’ll probably give Alcides Escobar a shot.
Craig Counsell can’t play every day. He has admitted as much himself.

Not to mention
He is playing through a knee injury. If he is asked to play everyday on it there could be problems later in the year.

I forgot about that
and 2B, even ones who hit like Counsell, aren’t exactly hiding in the couch cushions.
I know I hate moving Bill Hall around so much
But he has played 2B before, although Macha probably doesn’t know that…
And Braun last year proved the Brewers can survive with subpar defense at third, and have Cousnell give off days to Hall, Gamel and JJ
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Two years ago*. The problem is, Braun was historically good offensively to make up for that terrible defense. I don’t think we can realistically expect even near the same from Gamel.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
sorry
I agree though, Gamel will not have the rookie year that Braun had, and that might not be enough to make it up…
Start Hall the rest of the year at both 3rd and 2nd… Maybe a platoon at 3B with Hall/Gamel and have Hall and Counsell split time at 2B and Counsell give JJ an off day every once in awhile… dont know if people have better internal options, but a lot of different lineups will be used this year I am guessing
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
How about available 2B?
Is a Brian Roberts or Orlando Hudson trade possible, I will admit I dont know much about their contracts, but I seemed to remember a lot of rumors of trades before
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I doubt the Dodgers want to trade Hudson, and Roberts would be overpriced for my tastes
But a trade does make sense here, doesn’t it? On pace for 100+ wins and we settle with a Counsell/Irribarren starting platoon? (blahh…)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
What chips do we have
I feel like our farm is already kinda depleted from last years trades.
Roberts was recently signed to an extension.
Big bucks too, so he’s probably not going to happen.
How far will this one fly?
Ray Durham
What about Ray Durham? He is still a free agent and I think worth a small major league contract… He is mulling retirement but hasn’t decided yet and the only offer he turned down was a minor league one.
No on Belliard
no range at all, terrible defense. Grudz got a gold glove in ’06 and he was born in Milwaukee. Durham played here last year. Both would be good pick ups.

DeRosa?
he’s in a contract year I believe and Cleveland’s not very good. I doubt they’d be willing to start selling this early though. It would be fun knowing how much it would antagonize the Cubs.

True
could we have hall shift to 2nd with counsell and then let gamel and mcgehee split time at 3rd? I agree with those that say we probably need a trade. Can’t let this set us back

McGehee worked at 2nd during Spring Training
and has 7 innings under his belt there this season. So there may not need to be a shift.
How far will this one fly?
Nooooooooo
My Weeks Jersey was FINALLY a source of pride! And while we may still have a great season, I think this is a significant blow to the team. Although he may have not been a prototypical lead-off hitter, he was playing strongly in that position, and now we’re left with the people who were choices behind Weeks…
Man
This certainly takes a little wind out of the sails on a night you’re going for the sweep against one of your biggest competitors for the Division.
BCB, the preferred above replacement level sarcasm supplier.
Grudzielanek makes sense to me
You gain defensively, and the offensive loss wouldn’t be catastrophic. Weeks was not going to sustain the power he was showing, and he was actually having his lowest OBP season since 2005. Grudzielanek seems like a pretty safe bet put up a .340-ish OBP (Plus he was born in Milwaukee, if that counts for anything…)
All we’d be losing was Weeks’ power, and I think if there’s one thing this team can take a hit in, it’s power.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Well, he doesn't have something wrong with his knee
And he may hit .300 again. But he’s older than Counsell. How’s his defense?

Even if they signed Durham today
He’d likely need some time to get ready, just like Frank Catalanotto.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
BTW - Catalanotto has played about 150 career games at second base
But none since 2002.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
he's played mostly 2b in his career
plus 79 games at short in 2007.
He was a utility guy, more 1b than anything else, for Huntsville last year, but he’s at the Rottino stage of his career where he’s lucky if a team wants to give him a uniform to wear, so that’s more an organizational need thing than anything else.
Also, cheese.

this is one of the things that I hate most about sports- some seemingly minor injury in the middle of a great win ends up being a major downer for the whole season.
this is just depressing
And you feel so bad for Rickie who obviously had been working really hard.
I wouldn’t mind Durham back again.

For some reason, though (hmmm…maybe it’s the 19-5 run?), I’m optimistic. I think they’ll find a way to make do.
I heard this during my softball game tonight, didn’t believe it.

Heres to 1) Weeks healing completely and this injury not affecting his entire career. 2) The Cubs/Brewers/Cardinals having a good race for the Central and Wild Card this season.
