Welcome to the big leagues, Mat Gamel.
Gamel's three run shot, his first major league home run, turned a 1-0 Brewer lead into a 4-0 advantage, and the Brewers never looked back. In his first major league start, Gamel went 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI.
Braden Looper shut the Cardinals down for most of the game, allowing just three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over six innings en route to his fourth win. The Cardinals scored four runs in the seventh on a couple of errors and two two-run home runs to make the game interesting, but the Brewers added a run in the eighth on Corey Hart's fielder's choice and the bullpen made the lead stand up.
Prince Fielder was on base five times tonight, going 1-for-1 with four walks. Ryan Braun, Fielder and Mike Cameron, the 3, 4 and 5 hitters in the Brewer lineup, went 3-for-6 with 8 walks.

Classless
How dare they not allow the redbirds to win even one game. Absolutely shameful.

Not to preach to the choir but..
Sweeping the Cardinals was extra special, considering they were in 1st place when we started this.
It was also extra extra special considering how the Cardinals sure would have loved to beat the Brewers because they are so disrespectful to the sport with all that shirt untucking and diving catch celebrating.
Lohse must be really mad about the untucking tonight

And the whining continues......
“not insignificant to me
but, it doesn’t make me angry. I just think its sophomoric. The excuse they give doesn’t work either. So, if Cameron’s dad had the decency to wait til he got HOME to untuck his shirt, why does it make sense for these guys to do it in public?
But, anyways, thanks for letting me know I’m"really silly.""
"You have no honor!" - McClung to Fukudome
It was only one guy
the others played it down and said that it’s a pretty insignificant thing to be getting upset over, considering how poorly the Cards pitched.
I’m glad none of us trolled over there to rub it in

Braun scored four times
Last Brewer to do that was, amazingly, Kevin Mench on 9/1/07.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Heh, Matt Kata played in that game
Mel Stocker, too!
Weeks, Hart, and Braun are now tied for the team lead in runs. One last night on top for Weeks this year.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Fielder also walked four times
The last time the Brewers had a someone walk four times and someone score four times was 9/23/99, when Jeromy Burnitz did both against the Phillies.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Mat Gamel reminds me of a potato farmer.
Dunno, maybe it’s just because he looks like a young version of my uncle, who’s a potato farmer
Maybe it's because of all the taters he's going to bring to Milwaukee!
(I sincerely apologize for calling home-runs “taters” like MLB.com does, but here it actually worked)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Tater?
Could work, we’d need to publicize it, perhaps have a blog with tater in the title linked to Yahoo! and other blogs.
Please no

Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
He rushed in on a softly hit ball, didn't set his feet and rifled it about 6 feet wide of Fielder.
It wasn’t quite a routine play, but if he stops, collects himself and throws it’s probably an out.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Ironic
Isn’t he supposed to have problems with the ones he has time to think about?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Kind of interesting that
the Brewers had 3 web-gem worthy plays, yet it was defensive errors that almost let the Cardinals back in the game.
It's not just the mean, it's also the variance
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
The Full Mat Experience
A key HR and an error. Gamel seems to be just as advertised.
The question is: Can MKE afford his shaky defense given that their pitching staff is not loaded with lock-down talent, but instead rely on guys who need defensive support?
I think
that with judicious use of defensive replacement, and not starting him every day, and maybe a little Willie Randolph trying to smack some glove into him, the defense can be overcome.
At least I hope that’s the case.
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
Haha, you think the Brewers' defense was bad in the 7th?
Check out the Mets’ 11th:
- M. Loretta walked
- X. Paul safe at first on center fielder C. Beltran’s fielding error, M. Loretta to third, X. Paul to second
- J. Pierre intentionally walked
- R. Furcal flied out to left
- O. Hudson reached on fielder’s choice, M. Loretta scored, X. Paul to third, J. Pierre to second on first baseman J. Reed’s throwing error
This is after they missed scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th when Ryan Church failed to touch third while scoring on a triple with two outs. Beltran and LF Angel Pagan almost collided on the first error of the inning, and Jeremy Reed just straight threw away what was a perfect inning-ending double play grounder for the second error. And they already had committed three errors in the game before that!

These are the depths to which the Mets have sunk
You’d think they’d be able to get Jake Fox from the Cubs for pretty cheap, yeah?

I'm glad we don't have to hear about how the Crew doesn't respect the game for awhile
Now we can just focus on Cecil Cooper getting fired after we crush the Stros.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
I just went through the VEB game thread
I don’t think I’ve seen so many requests for a batter to get hit. I thought they were supposed to be one of the “classy” SB sites.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I flagged the "two-seamer to the spine" comment
And rec’d some of the sensible “We only hate him because he’s beating us; Edmonds was just as a bad or worse” comments.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Have we (and by we, I mean BCB) ever requested a batter get plunked?
outside of Kendall of course.
