Brewers' Minor League Pitching Talent
I am asking this being completely ignorant of the talent that individual pitching prospects posess outside of the obvious (Jeffrey) and with the knowledge that many believe our overall depth lacking with little major league help in the upcoming years.
Why haven't we given more consideration/love to Tim Dillard (6-1, 2.66) and Mike Burns (6-0, 2.15)? Both have done VERY well in Nashville this season as their records and ERAs indicate. Is there something beyond the obvious numbers (K/W, K/9, WHIP) that have people leaving these two out of the equation when considering good prospects in our farm system for trade value or helping the team in the near future?
In no way am I suggesting either of these two are potential aces but how come they have gone unmentioned in most discussions?

His name..
Is Jeremy Jeffress…not Jeffrey ;-)
Burns has been around for a while and has had a few chances in the majors, and has a fairly high career ERA to show for it. At this point, he would not be considered a prospect but rather a AAAA player. Dillard was given a shot last year to pitch in relief. It was his first stop in the majors. While he did not pitch horribly, he was not used in very high leverage situations either. I would expect him to get a call should a starter or reliever go down, but right now there is no room for him on the team, and he still has options left.
Often, pitchers that thrive in AAA have a hard time jumping to the majors. They usually end up there as relievers…and in some cases (like Burns), they struggle doing even that. The pitchers that are ready and capable of starting in the majors usually only spend about half a season at the AAA level…if that…or so I’ve found over the years while following pitchers.
You have to go into the lower ranks of the Brewers system to find the better pitching prospects. Both levels of A ball have some very good pitchers.
I think Dillard
is most commonly referred to as the guy to bring up if our starters start getting hurt - the next pitcher in line after McClung. Now that I think about it, our starters have been remarkably healthy so far, knock on wood.
