The Brewers and Cardinals celebrated Memorial Day with a good, old-fashioned pitcher's duel. Yovani Gallardo started and didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning for the Brewers, but was matched by Chris Carpenter, who took a perfect game into the seventh. All told, Gallardo pitched eight innings, allowed just two hits and four walks, and struck out six. Carpenter also pitched eight innings, and allowed two hits and no walks, striking out ten. Neither pitcher factored in the decision.

Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect top half of the ninth for the Crew, but Kyle McClellan pitched a perfect bottom half to send it into extra innings. Carlos Villanueva pitched a scoreless top of the tenth, and Bill Hall, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement for Mat Gamel, came through with a walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth, driving home Casey McGehee with the game's only run.

Equation

Number of hats sold = (Number of fans – Number of fans < 21) * Glasses of Alcohol served * (Price of hat / Price of glass of beer)

by GoGregGo on May 25, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Error

The subtraction of fans under 21 probably won’t be true. I don’t drink, but during my classes senior skip day we went to the Brewer game and a couple of friends snuck in flasks of alcohol in special shoes that have a spot to hide them. In addition, I would venture a guess that a lot of college kids at games with over 21 buddies probably will have some alcohol, too.

:) + Suppan = :'(

by NoahJ on May 25, 2009 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also...

The number yielded by that equation would be larger than the number of people over 21 as long as just one glass of alcohol was sold at the game. Consider:

40,000 fans – 10,000 under 21 = 30,000

  1. glasses of alcohol served: a conservative 5,000

Price of hat/price of drink = 15/7.5 = 2

30,000 * 5,000 * 2 = 300,000 hats sold. Everyone there including under 21 crowd bought 7.5 hats apiece. That’s a lot of revenue. We better be able to afford our payroll now. ;)

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on May 25, 2009 5:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He didn’t get the double-switch to the ump before Hoffman got to the mound, or so says the ump. Macha disagreed and said when the ump was pointing this out Hoffman still hadn’t reached the mound.

by Getting Yosted on May 25, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So he DID want the double switch

Interesting. Even though Gerut popped out and Hall had the game-winning hit, I think the non-double switch was a good move, though Macha didn’t intend it to work out that way.

He wouldn’t have gone more than an inning. It just would have saved a sub, but Bill Hall would have batted earlier.

From what I can tell:

June 12, 2005 – he got one out in the 9th and then lost it in the 10th with one out. So that was a multi-inning appearance, but only 0.2 innings of work.
If you’re looking for more than 1.0 inning of work, then it was September 29, 2005.

I wasn’t able to watch the game, so I’m just giving you dumb numbers. No clue on what would’ve happened today, but I’d guess he’s a one inning only guy.

I don't understand why pitchers don't get hit more often.

If a pitcher drills your #3 guy, why not drill the pitcher? Is it because your pitcher doesn’t want to drill his counter-part in retaliation knowing he’ll probably get the same?

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 25, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what "baseball people" say

That, and the fact that the best hitter is much more likely to get on base anyway, and get an extra-base hit when he does so. Hitting the pitcher is just giving up a free out.

That was a Manny Parra mental toughness inning

- A. Miles struck out, reached on wild pitch, on wild pitch
- B. Scales flied out to deep right
- A. Soriano grounded out to second, A. Miles to second
- R. Theriot doubled to deep left, A. Miles scored
- M. Bradley homered to deep left center, R. Theriot scored

Nah, you're right

I worked there for awhile and didn’t notice too much Cubs paraphernalia. I try not to pass up any chances to make fun of Racine, though. I would imagine there are a lot of Cubs fans in Kenosha.

Tampa led 10-0 at one point, and 10-2 going into the 8th

Even after Ryan Garko hit a three-run homer to bring the score to 10-8, the Rays still had a >99% chance of winning, because there were two outs. Jason Isringhausen’s WPA was -.952. That needs to be inducted into the Smithsonian or something.

by oconnobe on May 25, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Not just a relief pitcher...

…a relief pitcher with exactly ONE previous career AB!

That may be the worst bit of ‘managing’ I’ve ever seen! How can that possibly be the ‘best’ option Pinella had at that point?

Brenly and the other guy were speculating that Zambrano would have pinch-hit, but Z didn’t have his spikes on right then. Well, geez. Lou, if the bench is short because some players have the flu, maybe before the game, you could say to Z “Hey, I made need you to PH tonight, so be ready.” But the great Lou Pinella couldn’t think that far ahead?

Wow, just…wow!

by robertearle on May 25, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I looked it up; Neal Cotts, the pitcher Lou brought in, has two lifetime ABs, including a double. He was a better option than letting the other guy bat. Bring him in from the bullpen and let him hit.

He hit a homer in the minors, where he’s 5-16 batting. Not that letting him hit isn’t dumb, but it’s not like he’s never swung a bat before.
