Video highlights
The Brewers and Cardinals celebrated Memorial Day with a good, old-fashioned pitcher's duel. Yovani Gallardo started and didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning for the Brewers, but was matched by Chris Carpenter, who took a perfect game into the seventh. All told, Gallardo pitched eight innings, allowed just two hits and four walks, and struck out six. Carpenter also pitched eight innings, and allowed two hits and no walks, striking out ten. Neither pitcher factored in the decision.
Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect top half of the ninth for the Crew, but Kyle McClellan pitched a perfect bottom half to send it into extra innings. Carlos Villanueva pitched a scoreless top of the tenth, and Bill Hall, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement for Mat Gamel, came through with a walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth, driving home Casey McGehee with the game's only run.

Equation
Number of hats sold = (Number of fans – Number of fans < 21) * Glasses of Alcohol served * (Price of hat / Price of glass of beer)
Error
The subtraction of fans under 21 probably won’t be true. I don’t drink, but during my classes senior skip day we went to the Brewer game and a couple of friends snuck in flasks of alcohol in special shoes that have a spot to hide them. In addition, I would venture a guess that a lot of college kids at games with over 21 buddies probably will have some alcohol, too.
:) + Suppan = :'(
Also...
The number yielded by that equation would be larger than the number of people over 21 as long as just one glass of alcohol was sold at the game. Consider:
40,000 fans – 10,000 under 21 = 30,000
- glasses of alcohol served: a conservative 5,000
Price of hat/price of drink = 15/7.5 = 2
30,000 * 5,000 * 2 = 300,000 hats sold. Everyone there including under 21 crowd bought 7.5 hats apiece. That’s a lot of revenue. We better be able to afford our payroll now. ;)

Interesting. Even though Gerut popped out and Hall had the game-winning hit, I think the non-double switch was a good move, though Macha didn’t intend it to work out that way.

He fanned the Apostles 3,4,5 hitters in 37AD (Peter, Paul and John)...
… and then opened the next inning by drilling Matthew, who flounced his robes classlessly after hitting a walk-off the night before.
Hoffman was 27 then, so that would have been about his fifth year in the league.

From what I can tell:
June 12, 2005 – he got one out in the 9th and then lost it in the 10th with one out. So that was a multi-inning appearance, but only 0.2 innings of work.
If you’re looking for more than 1.0 inning of work, then it was September 29, 2005.
I wasn’t able to watch the game, so I’m just giving you dumb numbers. No clue on what would’ve happened today, but I’d guess he’s a one inning only guy.

…a relief pitcher with exactly ONE previous career AB!
That may be the worst bit of ‘managing’ I’ve ever seen! How can that possibly be the ‘best’ option Pinella had at that point?
Brenly and the other guy were speculating that Zambrano would have pinch-hit, but Z didn’t have his spikes on right then. Well, geez. Lou, if the bench is short because some players have the flu, maybe before the game, you could say to Z “Hey, I made need you to PH tonight, so be ready.” But the great Lou Pinella couldn’t think that far ahead?
Wow, just…wow!
I looked it up; Neal Cotts, the pitcher Lou brought in, has two lifetime ABs, including a double. He was a better option than letting the other guy bat. Bring him in from the bullpen and let him hit.
