Riske reports "ongoing pain" during rehab
From Gord Ash's Twitter page:
"rhp david riske reports ongoing elbow pain during his most recent "rehab" outing"
I guess we'll have to wait and see what the next step is.

Yeah, after he said he had "no idea" where the rumors of a possible TJ surgery came from before
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Sucks.. I really wanted Julio out and Riske showed some promise with KC. I guess we can almost close the book on Riske in 2009. So far we’ve paid him 8.25mm for 43.1IP. That could have gotten us at least HD Scoreboard! hehe..
I remember being excited at one point that we lost Linebrink and got Riske

Same here...
Seemed like one of the best middle-tier reliever signings that year, but boy has that ever fallen apart on the club.
It was a good signing at the time.
Cheap and he was coming off of a good season. Too bad. Would’ve been nice to replace Julio.
Cheap?
$13M for three years is not cheap, especially not for a middle reliever.

It wasn’t that bad for what looked like an elite set up man at the time given what the market for strting pitching was like. Didn’t Silva and Zito sign in that same off season?

Reliever performance is just way too variable to be handing out three-year contracts to guys just because they put up a sub-3 ERA one year
He might have looked like an “elite set up man” by ERA, but his K/BB was never anything to get excited about. No doubt he was effective, but if Melvin was planning on Riske being a fixture in the 8th inning, he was a fool.

so what's the "right" way to build a bullpen?
Out of all the approaches Melvin has taken, this years’ approach to pay for a medium-demand closer and assemble the rest through low-level trades and cast-offs seems to have the best results, but it just as easily could have blown up in his face. Is the point to just keep your investment low and flexible so that if someone sucks you can just ditch and find someone else?
Yes, that
You pay big money to truly elite relievers and build the rest from what you have on hand. Relievers are too unpredictable to lock money up in guys like Riske (insert tired pun here). DiFelce, Coffey, et al are shining examples.

You can build a good bullpen from minimum guys
You can’t build a good offense or rotation from minimum guys.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
Also he throws pretty much nothing but an 87 mph 2-seamer
I saw this news and I was almost happy. Get him the surgery and come back strong next season. I think we might have been stuck with a pile of uncuttable crap if he had been able to pitch ineffectively without pain.

And Julio's spot can be used on whatever 3A guy is pitching well, or Swindle

I think he was signed to be more than a middle reliever.
We had a busted bullpen at the time and it was a lot cheaper than what Linebrink signed for.
Right, because the two options were "sign Linebrink" or "sign Riske"

Looks like it's TJ surgery
Riske has an appointment with Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles on Monday, at which point a decision will be made regarding “Tommy John” surgery. Such a procedure would sideline Riske for up to a year.Ash also called out Riske for those “what surgery?” comments:“The likelihood is that he will have a reconstruction,” Ash said.
The Brewers have said from the beginning that Riske’s options were rehab or surgery, but Riske disputed during the team’s last road trip that surgery was ever discussed. Ash was surprised by those comments.“I don’t know what he was doing, because the diagnoses from both Dr. Raasch and Dr. Yocum were that he had a ligament issue and that if he rehabbed first and it didn’t work, he would have a reconstruction,” Ash said on Tuesday.
