What do you propose?

I guess you could drop Cam down. That’s the only viable option I see.

by Azor on May 27, 2009 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

That would be the most obvious solution

You could also not start Kendall and move Rivera up. You could tell Braun and Fielder to be adults and switch for a game. All of those are better options than allowing a LOOGY to become a LTOGY.

would be interesting to know what his aggregate line is against Ryan Franklin-like pitchers.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2009 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

didn't they try to look at this in The Book...

…and not find anything terribly interesting? I’ve been waiting for several years for somebody to demonstrate that hitters fare better/worse against certain pitcher categories (RH sinker-slider, low-velocity LH control artists, etc.) and as far as I know, nobody has.

It is possible that the fundamental assumptions about the nature of the batter / pitcher matchup that make us think that we should look at a batter’s splits vs. a pitcher in the first place are just flat wrong and that all unusually good or bad splits vs. certain pitchers are entirely the product of sample error.

by Br@wndo on May 27, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

and that all unusually good or bad splits vs. certain pitchers are entirely the product of sample error.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

right...

…but it seems like we’re also in agreement in that it seems hitters SHOULD have meaningful splits if you could lump opposing pitchers together in the correct categories to get at the differences in facing, say, a classic power righty w/ a 4-seamer and a couple offspeed pitches as opposed to a sinker-slider GB-machine righty.

AFAIK, the only such categorization anybody’s ever been able to demonstrate statistically is the one everybody already knows — the platoon split. Once you get more granular than LHP / RHP, I don’t think you find any meaningful correlations.

Pinchrun for Rivera?

(Is McGehee still in the game, so we can move him to catcher if need be?)
