Cardinals 3, Brewers 2
W: Todd Wellemeyer (5-4)
L: Manny Parra (3-6)
S: Ryan Franklin (12)
MVP: Frank Catalanotto (+.203)
LVP: Ryan Braun (-.187)
Win Expectancy Graph
SBNation Coverage
Maybe Braun should have taken the day off. Less than 24 hours after needing x-rays on his wrist, Braun was back in the lineup but didn't look like he belonged there, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout and two pop outs, and twice leaving runners in scoring position.
Manny Parra overcame some early struggles to produce a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits and five walks in 6.2 innings, striking out six. The Brewers, though, never found a way to bust the game open against Todd Wellemeyer or any of the five relievers that followed him. The Brewers managed just eight hits and two walks in the game.
Ryan Franklin allowed two men to reach in the ninth, but recorded the last four outs for his 12th save.

A trade secret
I usually have a version of it done by the beginning of the last half-inning, then edit it as needed to reflect the ninth.

the acknowledgement of the cards
by running off the field after the win 2 days ago = not a good decision.
better to just keep doing what we had been doing.

Villanueva never should have woken the sleeping giant last year
Good thing he hit the snooze button so much between then and now.

Perhaps Parra can help you with that.

Yow
- A total of 4 runs scored in 3 home games against the Cardinals.
- 12 runs scored over the last 6 games
- We haven’t scored more than 4 runs in 9 straight games.
Nottt so good.

Nice pun.
Unintended though it might have been.

Also,
The Brewers are 23-14 in games when Rickie Weeks plays, and 4-6 in games where he doesn’t.

Weeks is a loss...
… and so was Hardy. But before we start thinking that this is our offense without Weeks, we should keep in mind that Hart’s slump more or less began with Weeks injury and Braun was scuffling for a few days before getting hit in the wrist. Hart’s got his faults, but I doubt he’ll hit sub .200 the rest of the way, and sooner or later Brauny will go on a tear. Things will look much better then even though we still won’t have Weeks.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 27, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
re: Hart sub .200?
maybe not. but sub .250, probably.
he’s still horrible at hitting sliders. He’s still impatient overall. If a pitcher groves a fastball or changeup down the middle, maybe he’ll knock it out of the park, but otherwise he’s got a tremendous achilles heel that isn’t going to magically go away as the season progresses.
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2009 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Did I say he would magically become more than he is?
I don’t recall saying that. Point is he’s batting .176 over the last 17 games and that isn’t going to continue. Achilles heel or no, he’s a better hitter than he’s shown in that time frame and our run production will improve once he regresses to the mean again. He’s already corrected for the hot start, but his production levels have swung so far the other way that I think there’s another correction coming that will work in our favor. That’s all I’m saying.

It could just be me
But does it seem to anyone else that we’re giving up a lot of extra base hits? More than you’d expect?

ISO = SLG - AVG
NL 2009 ISO allowed: .151 (.409 – .258)
Brewers 2009 ISO allowed: .172 (.413 – .241)
Brewers ISO allowed last 6 games: .245 (.505 – .260)
Four out of seven hits today were doubles, but in the previous five games we were homered to death: 11 HR allowed. Wow. So yeah, despite allowed a lower-than-average batting average, we’re giving up more XBH, both over this ugly stretch and in general.

Well, I can see why he was mad.
He was wrong and the runner was safe, but because of his position he couldn’t see the runner’s left hand hit the plate behind his foot. All he likely saw was that the runner’s right hand wasn’t to the plate when he applied the tag, so he thought the ump blew the call. He was still wrong in believing he tagged the guy in time, but I understand why he thought otherwise.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he caught a suspension after that tantrum… bumping the ump, tossing the ball into the outfield like that. That may cost him a start.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 27, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wowsa
The throwing the ball might have given him the suspension. I just hope this wans’t the spark the Cubs needed to start hitting again. Maybe we need Prince to punch Manny again.

Tell Hart that he gets a punch in the shoulder from Prince every time he swings at a pitch outside the strike zone.

Playbill Fail
So during the slower parts of todays game I was reading through the Playbill/Gameday and stumbled upon an article written about Angel Salome. This caught me eye right away..

Proof Reader Fail!

In their defense
Huntsville and Nashville are easy to confuse.
At least they didn’t make my typo…I accidentally type “Bashville” about every third time I mention the Sounds. I’ve gotten better at catching it before I publish.

I’d imagine small typos happen all the time, I was just surprised it wasn’t caught in a proof read. It also looks like they started farming out the articles instead of doing them in house, so maybe that’s half the problem.

Have we discussed how ridiculous this is yet?
Name Team Votes VORP
Yadier Molina Cardinals451,368 3.3
Jason Kendall Brewers 383,773 -7.4
Ivan Rodriguez Astros 292,496 2.5
Russell Martin Dodgers 261,917 3.2
Brian McCann Braves 227,564 10.9
by warwick5s on May 27, 2009 7:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Kendall is slugging .257
Only Nick Punto (.218 – really) has a lower slugging percentage among guys with 3.1 PA/G.

His value isn't really below replacement level, though
It’s right at it about. I wouldn’t use VORP here. He has already been 10 runs below average batting, though, about 5 below replacement so far— his defense puts him right about at 0. That’s not good.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
