Idle reading while we wait for the game to start

Joe Posnanski says that Ben Sheets’ 2004 was the hardest-luck season by a starting pitcher since 1920 (in terms of W-L record).

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

Both managers and both catchers

ejected in the same inning (top half and bottom half). AAA umpire filling in for Ed Montague.

by oconnobe on May 29, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

well...

Sox scored on a sac fly BUT the Twins RF (Kubel) MAY HAVE nailed him at the plate. So Twins C (Redmond – sp?) jumped up to argue and was IMMEDIATELY thrown out. So Gardenhire runs out and OF COURSE is thrown out. MAUER must come in to catch BUT was DH so the Twins lost their DH.
Bottom of the same inning (6?) Josh Beckett doesn’t get a strike call SO screams GODDAMNIT so loud I heard it on TV. SO Bosox C jumps up to prevent Beckett from getting thrown out AND IS TOSSED! So Bosox manager runs out (too late) IS TOSSED.

Ump was filling in from AAA.

Love to see that

I don’t want to suggest platoon, but maybe they can toss in Cat man more often to give Hart some extra scheduled days off, it could help what Hart detailed as “full season fatigue” as reason for his fall off late last year

by pharom on May 29, 2009 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions

This year he experienced "full month fatigue" after April

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

He was doing so well

During the first 3-4 games! =(

Hey

Hart went yard 2 batters ago. Good for him

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Quick Kendall update

currently batting .203

anyone still Kendall fans out there? If so, I have a Chad Moeller to sell you

it's the intangibles I like

meaning no one can ask me to explain why I am in favor of him playing.

which is bad

beause that is exactly what I’m asking for

Kendall = obscenity

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

When he gets a day off

Someone is walking away with a black eye

by pharom on May 29, 2009 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

at least he's not striking out

and if everyone close to the team seems to think hit “grit” and other help to the pitching staff are so important, who am I to disagree? We are outperforming expectations with pitching so far

by hamburgular17 on May 29, 2009 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, grounders to short have a much higher run value than strikeouts

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

by battlekow on May 29, 2009 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

that's a post-result analysis

you’d agree that a ground ball has a higher rate of success overall than a K?

by lawlackey on May 29, 2009 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

yes in general

but grounders that make outs at short have as much value as a K

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Such as a double play?

It's always appropriate to post anything related to Kafka.

by Dionysus0 on May 29, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, a K is a post-result analysis also

Usually swinging hard enough that missing is actually possible has the side effect of, when you hit the ball, propelling it a non-trivial distance, unlike most of the balls Kendall hits.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

this is making my head hurt

what are you doing to us Kendall? why are you doing it?

by pharom on May 29, 2009 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not a stats geek AT ALL (geek being a complimentary term)

but is there a stat that attempts to answer the question, is a ground ball overall more productive than a swinging strike? Can Bill James’ mathematics solve this puzzle?

by lawlackey on May 29, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

hey

he’s batting slightly better than Uecker.

perhaps Kendall will be a popular radio broadcaster in 40 years, and we’ll love all the stories about how much he sucked as a player
