Corey Hart rumor-ish
Not sure if this snippet is so much of a rumor or just interwebbers speculatin' about a hypothesis, but it's possibly interesting nonetheless. At the very least, it's something to chat about maybe, right?
I'm a big Corey Hart fan, and would hate to see him go, but would a change of scenery help him, and might Gerut be able to fill in for him for the rest of the season? And, what might the Brewers be able to expect in return for Hart, if he truly is a trade candidate?
Hopefully not Brad Penny.

Heh, "By Nick Cafardo".
Colour me shocked that that’s who originated this rumour.

Blah
Unless we inexplicably fall out of contention, I can’t imagine we’re going to trade our starting right fielder, not unless we have a plan to replace him with someone better. (Gerut is fun to root for, but I don’t think he’s playoff team-starter caliber.)
Besides, our rotation has done pretty well, all in all. We do need a starter, but only to compete in a short playoff series, and I don’t think we’re getting an ace-type guy from a team that’s trading FOR Corey Hart. (If you’re trading for Hart, you’re probably trying to make the postseason, and won’t be trading a frontline starter.)

is corey hart really playoff team-starter caliber?
really?

He was last year
when the team he played on made the playoffs
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Corey Hart the all-star?
I’d say yes.

Diminished Value
I too like Hart, but I dont think the market for him is very great right now. After last season’s 2nd half slide, that seems to have continued into this year, I think the Brewers could get a bottom of the rotation starter, or a half way decent set up guy. They dont need either one of those things.

Honestly
I don’t see why articles keep saying “The Brewers need a starting pitcher.” Our starting pitching has been very solid lately; in fact, the only reason we’ve been scuffling a little recently is because our offense was slumping. Yes, Looper/Suppan/Bush will probably not pitch quite as well as they’ve been pitching, and Parra is always a question mark, but it really doesn’t seem to be some sort of huge pressing need. You can never have enough starting pitching, but the Brewers seem to have an adequate amount, and certainly aren’t so in need of it that they’d trade a starting position player.

How can you say our starting pitching has been very solid lately
When we don’t have Sheets or Sabathia??

Hehehe, yeah
I mean, I understood that in the offseason that people would think the rotation sucks, but I figured after the season actually started and the rotation very much hasn’t sucked, we’d stop hearing that.
To put it another way, I feel like there are two storylines I’m hearing simultaneously:
1. “Despite loss of Sabathia and Sheets, the Brewers have had some surprisingly good pitching!”
2. “OMFG The Brewers need another starter!!!!!”
And, yeah, those just seem to not really go together

1st half 2008 Sheets + 2nd half 2008 Sabathia = 2009 Gallardo
and that’s why all the preseason doom and gloom about the Brewers starting rotation was so baseless. Now, if Gallardo gets hurt….uh oh

If you combine those half seasons,
It would make one of the best seasons by a pitcher ever.

We Need Starting Pitching for the Post Season
Yes we have starters who will keep us in the game for the majority of the season but we NEED an ace for the post season or we not make it past the first round again this year. At 24/25 years old you can’t ask YoGa to be that guy, all this team needs to be a legitimate contender is an Ace (Jake Peavy) otherwise we plateau in the NLDS again

Man, I think you can totally ask YoGa to be that guy
He’s already been on the winning side of two 1-0 decisions so far this year; everyone talks about his poise as his best aspect, and it’s been really apparent. And an ace is no guarantee to get out of the NLDS; look what happened last year when we had Sabathia.

Come to think of it
Cole Hamels was only 24 last year when he led the Phillies to a World Series championship. If he can do it, so can Yovani.

The problem isn't age so much as experience.
Yoga hasn’t pitched a full season yet, so there’s a good chance that he’s bound to hit the rookie wall, much like Parra did last year.

I think the best sign
is that Gallardo seems to know how to win (h/t to Jason Kendall) when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

Kendall!!!

I agree
I think we need a credible #2 starter, and alas, I haven’t seen many signs that Parra is up for the task. And although I’m a Looper fan, I’d be a little nervous about having him start Game 2 of the first round of the playoffs.
lol…I suppose it might be a little early to start mapping out playoff starters. :)

did you forget about Suppan?

Mmmmm.
Halladay has easily been my favorite pitcher for awhile. Too bad we could probably never trade for him.

I'm not sure...
We’d want to. He only has a year left on his contract…..someone will surely be willing to overpay for him when he hits the market after the 2010 season…and he’s 32.
If we’re going to be trading prospects for pitching, the ideal trade would be for young pitching…preferably a pitcher without a history of injuries…or injuries that are waiting to happen.
by TheBurningRom on Jun 1, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
32 with a 2.63 ERA, 1.061 WHIP, and 170 ERA+ all in the AL.
Tell ya what, if I could have him or Sabathia, it’s not even close. You really don’t think that, were it possible and were it to cost roughly equal to Sabathia (plus a little more due to him having an extra year on his contract) we would not want to trade for him? Since we are discussing trading for a starting pitcher, if he were available he would be the best option on the market. Though, were he ever to become a trade candidate, he would cost us the rest of our top prospects, unlike Peavy.
But he’s not available, and won’t be while the Jays think they can still compete in the AL East, which they are so far.
:) + Suppan = :'(

I tend to think Parra and Cain are pretty close in overall value
and the difference is smaller than Hart. I’d offer Hart and a prospect for Cain, sure.

Cain is a potential ace and Parra’s ceiling is a good three

I Would Have To...
Agree with Jordan. Parra’s upside is higher than a good three. He’s a lot better than he’s shown this season…or last season for that matter. And lefties generally do take more time to develop than righties.

I would trade for a starting pitcher...
but for a AAA pitcher who could be promoted when we have a pitcher go down with injury.
I like our current rotation (minus the black hole that is Suppan but we can’t do anything about). What I don’t like is how shallow it is.
by Saberilliterate on May 31, 2009 7:06 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It's not like we're hurting for replacement-level, err, replacements...
Or are you using “AAA pitcher” as shorthand for something else? I’m honestly not sure what type of player exactly you’d want to trade for. If you mean “ML-quality pitcher who just happens to be stuck in AAA”, who would possibly give that up, and at what price?

McClung/DiFelice/Nick Green

Right, we already have two potential rotation fill-ins on the 25-man roster.
Chris Smith sure looks like he could step into the setup role for either of those guys, and I’m optimistic Tim Dillard wouldn’t embarrass himself in a bullpen role either. And perhaps even Mike Burns is for real, if Nick Green isn’t enough additional insurance for the rotation itself.

Don't forget about Dave Bush
He’s doing really well…
I guess if nothing else it would be nice to have another pitcher in case Parra self-destructs, plus we can replace Corey with Catman and never lose again!!!!
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.
