Milwaukee Brewers (13-12) at Pittsburgh Pirates (12-12)
Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates, May 4, 2009 6:05 PM CDT
Yovani Gallardo (3-1, 2.86 ERA) takes on Paul Maholm (3-0, 3.09 ERA) in a matchup of aces. Last Wednesday Gallardo dominated the Pirates, going 8 innings and striking out eleven. Oh, and he hit the game-winning home run, too.
Hopefully the rest of the lineup can get him some runs tonight. It'll be tough though, as Ryan Braun is (sop to stray Pirates fans: scared to play after his comments last week) still unable to play thanks to the intercostal of doom. Bill Hall gets the start in left field, the first time he's played the position in a regular season major league game. Casey McGehee makes his first start as a Brewer at third base.
Brewers Lineup
RF Corey Hart
SS J.J. Hardy
2B Rickie Weeks
1B Prince Fielder
CF Mike Cameron
LF Bill Hall
3B Casey McGehee
C Jason Kendall
RHP Yovani Gallardo
Pirates Lineup:
LF Nyjer Morgan
2B Freddy Sanchez
CF Nate McLouth
1B Adam LaRoche
RF Brandon Moss
3B Adam LaRoche
SS Ramon Vazquez
C Jason Jaramillo
LHP Paul Maholm

I'm confused by Hall in left
and scared by Braun’s intercostal….but it’s a Yovani day, so I think everything’ll be alright.

LH Maholm pitching,
so Macha wants as many RH hitters in the line-up as possible. Just saw on MLB Network that Hall is 16-28 (.571) lifetime vs. Maholm.
Hall vs. (Insert any Lefty)

Yeah, but
I’m pretty sure McCalvy said McGehee can play the outfield. Is Hall really going to be better in left than he would? Or is McGehee going to be better at 3rd than Hall?

It's all matchups
R/L. Have to keep Hall in there with his history of pounding on the Pirates (and Maholm in particular), and he’s the most versatile, so he gets moved. I don’t think giving Duffy a start against a lefty is going help his offensive struggles any….
I'm not arguing why they did it
I would have left Hall at third, let McGehee ride the bench, and start Duffy in left. I woudln’t risk sacrificing the defense to replace a backup left-handed bat with a backup right-handed bat.
i dont know...
he was tossing salt over his shoulder while standing under a ladder. so… it’s like a double negative?
McGehee is about average
Hall a little above average. Hall should be pretty good in left, though. Probably not much different than Hall and Braun.
