quick: draft a letter to the fangraphs folks

baserunning errors should be blamed on the baserunner, not the batter.

doubleplays and forceouts, yes. Non-forceouts, blame on the runner.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 6, 2009 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem with that

is it ruins the symmetry of the thing…pitchers are credited with the opposite of whatever the hitters get. There’s no real obvious way to break the percentages up but still keep them equal to what the pitchers’ are assigned. You could come up with a complicated way to do that, but the big appeal of WPA is the relative simplicity of the whole thing.

Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?

by Lefti on May 6, 2009 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

well...

the pitcher should still get credit for the baserunning error, but rather than assign it to the batter, assign it to the runner. if the runner was inherited from a previous pitcher, it doesn’t matter – it’s the current pitcher that matters.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 6, 2009 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

how much gets assigned to the baserunner, and how much gets assigned to the hitter? Like I said, you could come up with schemes for how to solve that, but it ruins the simplicity of the whole thing.

Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?

by Lefti on May 6, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

No, it's subtracted from one team and added to the other team

It doesn’t have to be added to the pitcher. Add it to Bruce’s total if you want.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

by battlekow on May 6, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

true dat

errors count against fielders too?

a defensive WPA and an offensive one? Standard flyouts/groundouts though, only pitchers get cred for

by PagsBrewCrew on May 6, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

But it is added to the pitcher

If a pitcher comes on when the opposing team has a 60% chance to win, or something, and he retires the side and the team’s chance of winning goes back down to 50%, for example, he’s credited with +.100 WPA. At least that’s how I understand it.

Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?

by Lefti on May 6, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, but teams win and lose ballgames, not players

The WPA is just assigned to the agent effecting the change in win probability. In this case, it was Bruce with his throw, not anything the pitcher did. The pitcher gets WPA subtracted for giving up a hit that resulted in first and third, no outs, and Bruce gets credit for bringing the situation to first base, one out.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

by battlekow on May 6, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions
