Game Thread #29: Brewers (16-12) at Reds (14-13)

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, May 7, 2009 6:10 PM CDT

On May 7, the 2008 Brewers were 16-17. No matter what the Brewers do today, they'll finish the day better than that, and they've also clinched their second winning road trip of the season, with three wins against the Pirates and Reds. The 2008 Brewers didn't win their second multi-city road trip until July 18-24.

Braden Looper takes the mound tonight for the Brewers. He's 2-1 with a 3.10 ERA so far this season, and beat the Reds for his first Brewer win on April 15. The Brewers are 4-1 in his starts this season.

For the Reds, Micah Owings gets the start. He's making his fifth start and has factored in the decision in each of them, going 1-3. He started opposite Looper and took the loss on April 15. Mike Cameron took Owings deep twice in that game. Owings, though, won his only start at home this season.

Bill Hall is back in the lineup today, via the JS:

2B Rickie Weeks
RF Corey Hart
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
CF Mike Cameron
SS JJ Hardy
3B Bill Hall
C Jason Kendall
RHP Braden Looper

Thursday's Game Thread is now open.

I hope that me watching the game tonight doesn't jinx us

Then again, we wasted their bullpen last night, so I’m not so worried.

No Phillips either?

Wow. That’s an, uh, interesting lineup.

Apparently Votto and Phillips are sick

With Sea Bass injured, they have two players available off the bench: Chris Dickerson and Darnell McDonald. Yeah.

And Owings is in the starting lineup

How unfortunate.

It’s Hernandez’s second career start at first base.

What's strange to me is that Dusty will use Owings as a PH but won't bat him anywhere other than 9th, even with that joke of a lineup

If this was game one of a four game series

Votto and Phillips would play and be encouraged to shake hands with every Brewer they passed.

Lets be honest with line-up the Reds are playing tonight.

Going through each posititon the only player that we might swap straight up is Bruce for Hart and that is probably even.

Owings reminds me of something that has always puzzled me about baseball

Over here the sport that requires the most similar skill set is cricket.
Almost every team has atleast one player who could play either as a batsman(hitter) or as a bowler(pitcher). Yet in baseball you hardly ever see a pitcher who could of made the team as a hitter. Nor do see a posititon player who is used as a starting pitcher. why is this? I know that you probably find alot players like this at lower levels so why do they not continue with this once they get to professional level?
Basically what I suppose i’m trying to say is why is there not more players like Owings or Brooks Kieschnick?

That's how hard it is to play at a professional level

Not only do you have to be good, you have to practice. A lot. Practicing a lot at one makes it hard to hone the other. Through the college ranks, you see a lot of two-way stars.
