Star-divide

The Brewers fell behind 1-0 in the first as Jeff Suppan got two quick outs before surrendering a double and an RBI single. They got those runs right back in the top of the second as Andrew Miller melted down, allowing six straight Brewers to reach base including bases-loaded walks to Jason Kendall and Jeff Suppan. The Brewers ended their half-inning with a 3-1 lead. Suppan allowed a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2. Casey McGehee drove in a run in the 5th to make it 4-2, which is how Suppan left it after 5 1/2. Enter Jorge Julio. Two singles, two HBP, a walk, and an error later, Todd Coffey had to come in and clean up the mess. It was 7-4 after that inning and that's where it stays as the Brewers, missing Mike Cameron and Ryan Braun thanks to knee problems and a foul ball off the leg, respectively, couldn't mount a comeback.

The links annoyed me to the point that I had to get rid of them after all.

Maybe we shouldn't talk about Remetee

macha presser on right now

he brings up a good point that he was trying to rest the pen and it was the 8-9 hitters up

No problem with saving the pen against the weak part of the lineup

but Chris Smith or T-Dill or even Swindle are better options that Julio right now, there’s no doubt about it.

Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.

So why not keep the soup on

for another inning, or at least start with him. Instead he pinch hits soup & burns through 3 important BP arms for a loss.

McCalvy says someone will be called from AAA tomorrow

And that Julio has “slid further down Macha’s depth chart.”

Considering that Julio had previously been in the “only when up or down by five runs” slot on the depth chart, I’m assuming that’s it for him.

yes

Andy Richter is back. Will Ferrell and Pearl Jam on the show tonight.

"He had some firsts," said Brewers manager Ken Macha. "His first homer, his first Major League start, his first error and my first gray hair."

Wow, I guess I made the right choice by sitting in the urgent care tonight

I get this text about McClung pitching a scoreless inning, but I didn’t hear about Julio fail or injured outfielders. Gee, that’s helpful.

And now I’m watching the Padres game. Cupcakes vs. Correia. Uggggggh, Correia sucks.

In other news Difelice might be hurt (Julio may not be gone just yet)
The Brewers’ bullpen is at the breaking point due to a recent heavy workload and Macha revealed after the game that Mark DiFelice is unavailable because of an ailing elbow. Macha said DiFelice bumped his elbow at home a couple of days ago but I talked to DiFelice and he thought it was something more than that.

I had an X-ray (Monday) and it came back negative," said DiFelice, who pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings Sunday against the Reds but paid for it. "It’s just sort of inflamed. It’s tough to move it right now.

Cristhian Martinez won his first game

And got a free trip to AA Jacksonville as a reward. It makes room for tonight’s starter, Anibal Sanchez.

next time there's an expansion team...

the first year they should just option around starters so they only have two on staff at any given time. Then they can have more relievers or bench players.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 2, 2009 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh, yeah...that

so…i guess you’d need 10-12 guys then. oh, the potential for suck would be extraordinary, especially as the presupposition is that they’ll all be rookies (or virtually so), and not rule 5/expansion draft veteran pickups.

but if I could create my own fantasy team with all players considered rookies using otherwise MLB rules, I might give it a go for a while until I’ve evaluated every pitcher on my staff.

one could do a lesser version of this – rotate your slot 5 starts between two young players, sending down to AAA immediately after the start, whenever you have an offday at least once every 5 days (otherwise you can’t use a pitcher the second time his slot comes up, as that’s the 10th day he’s in the minors). That way you can give both pitchers MLB experience. Both would get AAA work. On days when both pitchers are optioned to AAA, you could rotate in a optioned position player for 4 games (obviously you’d have to rotate between the two of these), effectively making yourself have a 26-man roster when the pitchers aren’t pitching. The travel costs for rotating these 4 players around could get pretty steep though, plus the pitchers may or may not be exposed to a lot of play at the MLB level on their day not-in-the-rotation.

Use the 9 LaPortas

Then you only need 3 Gallardos.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

On the upside...

at least the Marlins get to shuttle their pitchers around at no roster cost thanks to their minimum-salary franchise construction. The Mets seemed to be forced to DFA guys at a rate of 2+ per week when they did the same thing earlier…

by Zeyes on Jun 2, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mets vs Marlins pitching

The Mets having to DFA guys is more of a function of them using quad-A and journeyman types who burned all their options sometime at the turn of the century; the Marlins, on the other hand, have a bunch of guys in their early 20s who will have all their options burned by the Fish and end up on the 2015 Mets.
