Rumorville: ??? (with poll)
It's on Al's Ramblings. It's on Brewerfan.net. It's on Bernie's Crew. We haven't seen a rumor like this since the Alex Ochoa/Greg Maddux debacle of Aught-two.
They're all reporting the same thing: someone on the Brewers is being traded for someone else. Maybe.
Now I know some Rumorville readers like to delve deep and wallow in the details of a trade like this. How will we compensate for the departure of, umm, someone? How will, err, that new guy fit in with the rest of the team?
As for the names being bandied about...
- Al astutely noted that Mike Rivera was used as a pinch-hitter yesterday instead of JJ Hardy. Both Seattle and San Diego could use a shortstop. In return, the rumor is we'd be getting a starting pitcher, maybe the likes of Erik Bedard or Cliffly.
- Brewerfan.net is dreaming of Jake Peavy and Roy Halladay
- Bernie's Crew dismisses Jake Peavy, but thinks Cliffly might be a possibility, with Manny Parra perhaps on the way out.
None of the more official sources (Tom Haudricourt, Adam McCalvey) has anything, nor does MLB Trade Rumors.
It's tough to evaluate the validity of such a rumor, with Macha benching many of the starters in yesterday's game. One interesting angle to explore is that this trade is going down so soon after the draft. That could be just a coincidence, but...

I'm not a fan of the JJ for Bedard rumor
Because is just a half year guy, though he is very good. A package for Halladay or Lee though would be very nice.

Halladay
Roy Halladay is easily a top 5 pitcher in the major leagues, that would be a steal. I don’t see the Jays selling when they’re only 3 back in the East though.

Agreed
The Jays would need to fall about 10 back by the trading deadline. Even then, they could see how things go next year before trading him. Like the Giants with Matt Cain, and the Indians with Cliff Lee, they are definitely in a position of strength.

But JJ is only a year and a half player…He is a free agent after 2010 and you are kidding yourself if you think that we will be able to compete for his services.

I have to say
Bedard is my first choice. He is my favorite non Brewer pitcher. Though, I’m not a huge fan of a Peavy deal…

Escobar appears ready
But as the Brew states, the pitching has held up pretty nicely. I agree that the team does need a solid #2 starter, as they did coming into the season.
Hardy for Cain, Lee, or Bedard probably all benefit the team in the long run. Each trade probably also includes a prospect going over as well.
Even if Escobar were to only hit about .250 at the bottom of the lineup, his D improves the team.
Pull the trigger!

I also think this team desperately needs some speed at the leadoff spot,
and Escobar could possibly provide that.
by oconnobe on Jun 12, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hardy's D isn't too shabby either, though
He’s scuffling right now at the plate, but think I’d still rather have Hardy vs. Escobar long term…

certainly would prefer Hardy the next 1.5 years
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

Ok.
But what if the question is would you rather have Hardy or Escobar and (insert name of preferred pitcher here)? You could move Escobar instead of Hardy, but given the years of control over Escobar that doesn’t make much sense to me…

We already have a starting SS in the wings
Think about it – Hardy for Bedard or Lee.
We add an awesome SP, which we need, and we promote Escobar, a SS we already have. I’m sure Escobar could muster up the .220 average that Hardy is posting.
by sdsowlsa on Jun 12, 2009 1:20 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm not gonna say we won't lose anything by replacing Hardy
But we certainly have a viable replacement.
Also, If Escobar is the one to go, does that mean Hardy gets a long term deal?

Trading Escobar
kind of flies in the face of our small-market philosophy.

that's very true (and unfortunate)
it makes much more financial sense to flip Hardy considering the quality of his replacement vs. cost

Is this more Boston Globe tom-foolery?
Seriously, we may be trading someone… somewhere… we don’t know who, or for what, or even if it’s going to happen, but hey, LETS THEORIZE ABOUT IT!!! C’mon guys…

But it IS fun to theorize,

I call it
the Remington, Indiana Lineup.
According to Google Maps that is the halfway point between Milwaukee and Nashville.
"He had some firsts," said Brewers manager Ken Macha. "His first homer, his first Major League start, his first error and my first gray hair."

Cliffly
Did you know he is leading the AL in hits allowed with a BABIP even higher than that of Manny Parra? Yet he manages to get through nearly seven innings per start. Weird.

Hardy to Padres?
Won’t happen. The pAAAdres have two (cheap) SS coming off the DL this week which they are happy with. They could still move Peavy (after he gets back from the DL) but they wont acquire a SS

If The Brewers are going to trade for SP then it needs to be more than a half year rental I just don’t see the point in getting another rental that isn’t going to be better than CC was.
Cliff Lee or Matt Cain seem the most suited…but they will cost.
Parra & Gamel for Lee?
Matt Cain will (Rightly so) cost a lot youre talking Fielder or Hardy & Hart.

Tom H
@Haudricourt: Brewers GM Doug Melvin: “As of today, there is not one starting pitcher that is available.” Is that clear enough for the rumor mongers?
I bet the Rockies would give up Adam Eaton in the right deal. :)
