Tuesday's Community Mug
This morning's WIAA State Baseball tournament at Fox Cities Stadium is keeping me from usual Mug duties, so today the responsibility is on the BCB Community. You can link anything interesting you find in the comments section of this post.
Your regular roster of writers will provide some content during the day. Tonight's game is at 6 again, and Gallardo is pitching, so that's good.

One thing lost in last night's festivities
The Indians busted out the Ricky Vaughn bobbleheads last night. Something I will be looking for on Ebay, though I would want a Jobu one. Below is a pic

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
Casey McGehee...
… is batting .429 against starting pitchers this year. Probably should keep him in there, eh?
Until he plays himself out of the lineup
I say keep him in

huh?
…because there psych dept has a lab devoted to memory research? or am I reading way too much into that comment?
more groan
if it gives you any satisfaction, i wasted 5 minutes of my life thinking to myself “Now, why did BK say Colorado State?”, but I knew it wasn’t ‘random’.
but it was in a way...

conversely Cameron is 1 for his last 23 at bats.
Lucky for him he is being covered by the smoke from the JJ Hardy and Bill Hall slumps. His Avg has dropped almost 20 points in 4-5 games

Yeah, what a bum
.252/.361/.481 with elite defense. That’s completely comparable to Bill Hall.
: insert eye roll :
It was a great selection of awesome.
I'm not at all disappointed in Cameron's performance to date...
… it’s the bad habits that he’s gotten himself into that bother me, and the fact that people are quick to justify it by saying that’s how he always is…
Bill Hall hitting .133 since May 1st. He doesn’t belong on an AAA roster at this point, let alone MLB.
so glad you are cool with his play
So when he gets down to .230 will you start to worry BK?
And BK did I compare him to Bill Hall no I said people are so zeroed in on Hall and Hardy’s struggles that are giving Mr. 2-3 K’s a game a pass :)
Let me spell it for you Cub fans O N E H U N D R E D A N D O N E Y E A R S
No
Even if he hits .230, he’ll be providing above-average offense and superior defense. Anyone who expected Mike Cameron to hit like an MVP all year was a fool, and anyone that’s disappointed with his overall line of .250/.340/.470 or whatever at year’s end is also a fool.
Yeah, he’s slumping right now, but seriously, how fucking shocking—oh my god, a baseball player in a slump! Alert the press! Two great things about Cameron: his defense doesn’t slump along with his bat, and he’s still walking; his OBP is almost .300 in June, despite a .122 batting average.
Also, despite your massive propaganda effort to the contrary, Cameron has struck out more than twice in a game exactly once this year. You’re pushing this one way too hard, and it’s because of the annoying “strikeouts are bad!” aesthetic taste. Let it go.
It was a great selection of awesome.

No it is because Cameron is bad
And yes I believe that Strike outs are bad.
A K does nothing to move runners or drive in runs
And I will never let it go I hate Cameron with the power of a thousand suns and will not rest till he is gone. ;P
oh and by definition propaganda does not have to be totally true to be effective bwahahahahahahahah

A K cannot be a double play, however
If you look over the course of a season at the value an in play out gains over a K by driving in runs/advancing runners, and the value it loses by potentially being a double play, you find that they pretty much cancel out, and a K is no worse than any other kind of out.

You seriously think Mike Cameron is not a good player?
This confounds me. You want him to ground out to short instead of k when he makes his outs? I don’t care if he dresses up in a skirt and swings underhanded backwards behind his back, he’s a damn good baseball player.
I last May, still no more than Nick Neugebauer not.
He should bunt instead of striking out
Bunting a lot = good, hardworking player.

TH
TH is running the risk of starting internet rumors with this post.
Speaking of Internet rumors, Rosenthal’s latest blog has a lot of info on the Brewers. He says that we have a scout watching Erik Bedard’s starts. Rosenthal cites Hardy’s low BABIP to say that his value is still high, and notes that, while the Brewers are constantly getting called about Escobar, they’re reluctant to trade him unless Hardy is locked up long term. He also noted that the Hardy-Red Sox rumor involved Brad Penny. No wonder the trade didn’t go anywhere!
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I remember when Melvin was asked about signing Penny
when he was in free agency. His answer was “no.”
There’s nothing at Nashville better than Mike Burns (7-2, 2.69) and Tim Dillard (7-3, 3.98).
Awesome analysis, Tom. Nick Green is a better option than Dillard, but oh noes! Green has a 5.40 ERA and is only 2-3!
It was a great selection of awesome.
I'm glad Jeff doesn't list ERA on minor league splits
I don’t even look at it, ever. Just check the K:BB ratios and GB numbers and you know all you need about a minor league pitcher.
I last May, still no more than Nick Neugebauer not.
Well, "all you need to know" except for his likelihood of actually being called up, especially when we're talking AAA->MLB.
It may make for a cleaner analytical view fo simply ignore flawed stats such as ERA, but that seems a little doctrinaire to me to be honest.

Of course you shouldn't ignore it
but I’d like to think I’d have a better grasp on who’s pitching better by checking guys mls pages once in a while than someone who tracks their ERA. I’m just pointing out that looking at 50 innings at AAA and two starters with slightly different ERAs isn’t going to tell you much about their skill level so far.

There are some real characters over at the Cubs sister site. The guy who made this comment is so wound up in the team that he says some ludicrous things. Somehow I find him likable in contrast to a few others. The guy who poses as a woman creeps me out.
will we actually be lucky enough
for him to be a starter for the Suds?
that would be GREAT.

The bit of snark directed at Raul Ibanez is funny too.
Cliff Lee
What not to do when your ace has a no hitter in the 8th inning
In the eighth inning Sunday night, Cliff Lee took the mound with a no-hitter against St. Louis. While he was warming up, the Indians’ in-house announcer, appearing on the Progressive Field scoreboard, asked a fan this trivia question: “Who was the last Indians pitcher to throw a perfect game?”
Yadier Molina hit Lee’s first pitch of the inning for a double into the right-field corner
I know that is from a couple of days ago, but I hadn’t heard the story.
Bob Barker wouldn't have done that
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I don't believe in 'curses'
but that’s because it’s announcers in the booth saying it. I’d certainly believe there could be a detrimental effect if the looming fact of a no-hitter is broadcast to the entire frickin’ stadium where the pitcher couldn’t help but hear the phrase, “perfect game.”
Casey McGehee
Why does this sound so refreshing?
via McCalvy’s preview for tonight
McGehee picked up a souvenir Sunday at Miller Park. A fan that McGehee knows only as “Joe” caught his first home run in the left-field bleachers and exchanged it for a signed baseball.

Mike Burns
Another blurb from the McCalvy preview.
Nashville projected its next five starters, and Mike Burns wasn’t in the group. He pitched seven scoreless innings Sunday, and he is a candidate to join the Brewers when they next need a fifth starter on June 27
If he pitched Sunday and needed to pitch 13 days later on a Saturday, he wouldn’t be able to get 2 starts in. You would probably be most inclinde to pitch him on Sunday (6 days rest followed by 5 days rest) or Monday (7 days rest and then 5 days rest.)
What I’m saying is that it looks like Burns is being lined up for that start on the 27th
I'm glad you put that last line in
I’d probably have to reread that explanation a few times. I say bring him on though.
Heh. I put the last line in because I didn’t think I was explaining it well. I’ll try again.
- Burns pitched on Sunday the 14th (7 shutout innings 3 hits 4 K)
- He would normally start again on Friday but the Sound announced their next 5 pitchers (through Saturday) and Burns is not scheduled.
The Brewers need a starter on Saturday the 27th. If Burns were the guy, you could only start him once between the 14th and the 27th…so I would think the options would be:
- Start him in AAA on the 21st. He would be pitching on 6 days rest, and would have 5 more days rest until the 27th.
- Start him in AAA on Monday the 22nd. He would be pitching on 7 days rest but would then be lined up for a normal 4 days rest before the 27th.
Prince vs lefties -- shhh, don't tell
Prince vs LHP:
81 PA — .310 / .395 / .634 /.1.029
Prince vs RHP
199 PA — .288 / .432 / .569 / 1.001
Prince, in what BB-ref refers to Late & Close situations:
38 PA — .333 / .526 / .778 / .1.304
someone should probably tell Macha about Gamel vs. lefties though
career minor league OPS of .887 vs LHP, .876 vs. RHP
it’s a small sample size but even this year in the majors he’s .889 OPS vs LHP and .647 vs. RHP

He was the only one I could think of who had bad lefty splits.
.133/.255/.133 for a nice gritty .369OPS
To be fair his career splits are not very dramatic (.699 OPS RHP / .649 OPS LHP)
I was just checking the box score in the LA Times
Apparently Prince hit another grand slam last night. That has to be what, 10 or 12 in his career?

Bedard
Erik Bedard, P, Seattle Mariners Tuesday 6/16, 9:21 AM CT
FoxSports.com is reporting that the Brewers appear to be very interested in Mariners’ starter Erik Bedard. A source close to Bedard has indicated that the Brewers have had scouts in attendance for several of Bedard’s starts over the past few weeks.
Our View: The Brewers will need to make a move for a solid starting pitcher if they are going to stay in the playoff race, and Bedard seems like an excellent candidate assuming he is completely healthy. The Brewers have plenty of depth at the shortstop position, and they would like to translate that depth into a new starting pitcher through the trade market. If Bedard does get moved, look for Milwaukee to be a likely destination.
Per Roto Times
See above
it came from a Rosenthal story. It looks like Roto Times added the “Very” interested

Bedard scares me.
An injury prone rental player that’s already being held out with “a bit of shoulder soreness”
I just don’t feel comfortable with our #1 & 2 pitchers only having pitched roughly 80 innings last yr. Will they hit a wall come later in the season? Am I just paranoid we’re getting a left handed Ben Sheets, and that Yo & Bedard will have a tired arm come late season/playoff time? I never seen him pitch, his #’s look just dandy on the cover, but it looks like he has some struggles going deep into games. I guess IFF he can continue to average 6 innings a start with a 2.47 ERA that is nothing to sneeze at.
It’s pretty obvious we need another top of the rotation starter. Teams know that, will they be holding us hostage to get the most they can? I guess if doug thinks the price is right and he is comfortable making another big trade to acquire a big name pitcher I’m all for it. I’d prefer it not be another half yr rental and we’re back in this situation next yr but that is probably easier said than done with what’s out there.
