Rumorville: Let's add a Cub! (w/poll)

Well, a former Cub.

In his article on players who could be on the move, Jayson Stark says Mark DeRosa is becoming "more marketable by the minute."  As we've witnessed personally over this past series, DeRosa can hit plenty, going 5 for 15 with 2 home runs against the Brewers.  For the season, he's OPSing .827, and hasn't been under .792 since 2005.  Plus, he can play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and both corner outfield positions.

The Brewers need a second-baseman to replace Rickie, who is out for the season, and we're all in agreement that Craig Counsell, as remarkable a season as he's having, can't play everyday.  Counsell and McGehee form a nice platoon, although McGehee is nursing multiple injuries himself.  I think DeRosa, sporting a nifty .348 OBP, could fit in well at second.  For one, his contract for 2009 is $5.5 million, so the Brewers would be on the hook for, say, $3 million --- not peanuts, but probably not out of our range, either.  For two, he fits exactly what we need: we want a plus bat in the lineup at second base for the rest of the season, but we don't necessarily need him in 2009, when Rickie will be back.

Plus, c'mon --- tell me you wouldn't love to have DeRosa at second base when we play the Cubs.

I can see two downsides off the bat (so to speak): for one, any money or prospects we have to give up to land DeRosa would mean money and prospects NOT available to land a pitcher, which we probably are more in desperate need of right now.  (Rambling Al suggests getting a reliever, which might not be a bad idea, given how few starting pitchers there are presently available, and how spent our relief corpse is.)  Moreover, it would probably mean Gamel would go back to Nashville, as Counsell and McGehee are too good to not have on the team, and Bill Hall is too expensive to cut.  (Keep in mind too that Counsell is our backup at shortstop; the only other person with meaningful time to back up Hardy is Bill Hall, who hasn't played short since 2006 and is sporting a .201 average right now.)  Although Gamel offers more than Hall right now, I can get behind a Hall/McGehee platoon, with Counsell backing up DeRosa and Hardy.

Why not his teammate Jamey Carroll?

We could have a lefthanded and righthanded Craig Counsell then.

I think

you just answered your own question.

Also, cheese.

Hmm

Instead of 8 LaPortas, we can have 8 LaCounsells?

I voted the third option

before I read the whole thing…

I was assuming you meant trade Gamel for DeRosa, to which I say “no!”

but if we can keep gamel in the org and give him a bit more AAA reps, I’m all for it.

I don’t think he’s quite ready for the show yet. He’s had some nice shots, but doesn’t have quite high enough average for him to remain with the team (even if he is better offensively than Hall).

Oh good God no

I’d never suggest trading Gamel for a DeRosa - I’d say to make room for DeRosa, Gamel would likely get sent down. I guess that might happen anyway, though.

The ideal would be to replace Hall with DeRosa, but somehow I don’t see that happening.

I think Gamel needs to go down to AAA again...

… and I wouldn’t mind having DeRosa, but I don’t think the price we’d have to pay would be worth it.

i have a reasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

I think

our offense is potent enough with two consistent mashers in the middle surrounded by three guys who can get hot at any time. I’d like to see the resources used to bring in pitching.

You can never have too much pitching.

It is what it is.

That's true, and God knows we need the pitching help.

One thing I didn’t get into, though, is the lack of pitching that’s expected to be available. Really, the Indians have no reason to trade Cliff Lee: he’s relatively cheap next year, and if they don’t contend this year, I’m sure they’re thinking about 2010. With Peavy and Bedard both on the DL…well, there might not be good pitching to be had, another reason why Moustache might opt for a reliever.

I wonder: do you think in the back of DM’s mind is the thought that we won’t have Fielder for too much longer? Even if Gamel is the real deal, it won’t be easy replacing Prince. I know he doesn’t want to trade Gamel or Escobar, but I bet he’s aware of the possibility that we might start regressing to .500 baseball when Prince leaves, and maybe we need to make our run now.

Regardless how long we have Fielder,

we should make the run now. There are no guarantees for the future. Back in ’05 and ’06 we were looking ahead thinking about how good the team could be in a few years. Well, that time is now.

Honestly, if I have to suffer a few losing seasons in order for them to have a shot at playing late in October, that’s fine with me.

It is what it is.

I think the Brewers window is open as long as Fielder is on the team

They may very well be competitive every once in awhile after he is gone, but to have a real shot at something special in the next 10 years most likely will only be as long as Prince is here… automatic producing draft picks like Weeks, Braun, Fielder from drafting so high wont occur the next 1-3 years most likely with an above average team- and will take a long time to rebuild the team with Major league ready stars… especially with a small market team, they have there window of opportunity only for 2-4 years I feel when young talent gels, and then often have to rebuild.

I think the Brewers need to wait a little longer before they pull a trade this year, just to make sure the team is still going to be in it… and don’t trade for a player early July, go in a slump and are way out of it come September- with all to show for it is a lost prospect… wait until the deadline and make sure you trade for the biggest need that can make the biggest difference…

I liked the move for CC last year because it was early and we got mroe use out of him, but I just want to be sure if the Brewers do trade, they are in it to win it!

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
