Julio released; Burns summoned
As predicted in this morning's Mug, Jorge Julio has been released and Mike Burns has been called up from AAA. Burns is 6-2 this year with a 2.98 ERA with the Sounds. Interestingly enough this was recently posted on the Sounds site.

I credit KL's question in McCalvy's blog

surprise, surprise

I am actually impressed by
The Speed and down right ruthlessness of this decision
I am happy to see that a performance like JJ last night was not rewarded with more chances.

It's sad for him
But a good move for the team. There’s no reason to be paying for a pitcher who is struggling so much. Maybe there’s a minor league team who can pick him up and help get him the rehab starts he needs to get better, if it’s possible for him. In the meantime, we can use the extra spot to bring in some pitchers who can get the job done a little better than what we all witnessed last night.

we still have to pay him
so, we’ll still be paying for a pitcher who is struggling.

Wow, sucky organization on my part
I meant there will be no financial obligation to keep Burns (and whoever else might end up in that spot if he sucks) around like there seemed to be with Julio. There are maybe reasons why I shouldn’t get up at 6:30 in the morning when it’s not needed.

Burns
Will get paid. I’m not sure exactly how it works, but I believe his contract becomes guaranteed when it’s purchased from Nashville. I’m not sure which minimum salary he falls under though…minor league or major league.
It’s not that much of a big deal as Julio’s contract wasn’t that huge anyway. $950,000 guaranteed with $900,000 in bonuses that he won’t get.

He'll get the major league minimum salary, pro-rated for how long he's on the roster
He probably has a split contract paying him differently depending on whether he’s in the majors or minors. So he’ll get paid, but it won’t be much, and it’s easy to swap him out for another arm, if need be.

does he have options?
or if we send him down after a couple of weeks, would we have to DFA/pass him through waivers?
I think he might have one option left - it looks like his teams used one in 2005 and 2006
Either way, the point is if he sucks they can get rid of him for another arm without hassle. If it means they lose him, so what at that point.

Burns
not exactly a snazzy mlb line. And I’m assuming he won’t be starting and shoving Parra back to the pen.
hopefully he has a better go around this time
This is excellent news

Meh.
Probably a good move, but the injury to DiFelice was the only reason Julio was in that game last night anyway. Up until last night, I’ve been pretty okay with Macha’s use of Julio, he’s gotten the low leverage innings that don’t really matter, and he did okay in that role.
I’m hoping that Macha uses this Burns guy the same way he’d been using Julio up until last night. Mop-up, blow-outs, etc.
The last thing I want to see is Burns coming in here and getting chances that would have been given to other pitchers. The bullpen’s been solid, just because a new guys coming up doesn’t mean that anyone elses role should change. I want to see this Burns guy just as often as I saw Julio. Once, maybe twice a week.
does anyone know what's up w/DiFelice?
I’ve only heard vague mentions of an injury
"my goodness"

He's out with a Dessens
He’s having season ending surgery today

Better than being out with a (Geremi) Gonzalez

Smith or Dillard would have been a much better choice
I have no clue why you’d take Burns over Smith. Maybe Smith is only a 1 or 2 inning guy, whatever. They have the same 1.5 ish BB rate and Smith is King 10 per 9, and Burns is down around 5. I guess they want a long guy for multiple innings, but I would use Smith in a situation like last night’s 6th, and I wouldn’t use Burns there. Dillard would probably be a good compromise choice.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
Or they are expecting bigger things from Smith
So they want him to continue to get regular work. Kinda similar reasoning to why McGehee made the team out of ST rather than Gamel.

I agree, Smith is King
Dillard wasn’t picked because he pitches seven innings the other night; another argument against putting him in the rotation down in Nashville, which I still don’t get. I don’t know why it was Burns instead of Smith, unless they want a true long man.

right with you BK
I’d much rather see Smith, someone with a little more upside
