SBNation Coverage
Manny Parra sucked tonight, allowing ten earned runs on eleven hits and two walks in four innings. It's finally gotten bad enough that one has to question Parra's continued spot in the rotation: Parra has allowed 21 earned runs in his last three starts, and was left out there to soak in it for a while tonight after a one-on-one mound meeting with Ken Macha.
If you saw tonight's game you already know how much it sucked, so let's try to shine some light on the positives:
- Jody Gerut singled in the second, stole second to break the Brewers' long streak without a stolen base, then stole third and scored on Manny Parra's sac fly.
- Mike Burns saved the bullpen by pitching four scoreless innings of relief in his Brewers debut.
- Ryan Braun, after leaving last night's game early, was able to play the full game and went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Corey Hart picked up a meaningless two-run shot in the ninth to close the gap to seven runs.

That Corey Hart home run made you scramble to fix this, didn't it?

It did.
Thankfully, the top of the 9th was pretty long.

Including his batting performance.
I forgot about his sac fly.

one good thing
I was finally able to watch the Total Eclipse of the Heart video. Very good stuff.

On a side note
Ill be up in MKE for the week after the fourth of july and im pretty excited to see Hoffman pitch for the brewers. I saw him a few times closing out for the Padres but from what I’m hearing, the brew crew gives him a much better (louder) intro.

I wasn't there for that
but of the many games that I’ve been to, the crowd has never been so into every single pitch. It is really loud, and really exciting. I hope you get to se him pitch

Considering
we play the cards and the dodgers while i’m in town, I’ll probably be lucky to see him. Hoffmans into in SD was pretty tame when I saw it. Still louder than any other closers ive seen but nothing of note like what i’ve been hearing.
Wouldn't that make you
more likely to see him?

Playoff game victory by far.
We remained standing in the bleachers for just about every single pitch.
After the game, people stood atop the ramps watching people leave and cheering.

The one positive tonight = Mike Burns
Nothing overbearing in his appearance but he saved the pen tonight and established that he can do something up here hopefully making a strong pen even stronger.
I think if Burns is able to establish himself up here the next few weeks we are a little more free to trade someone from our pen like Carlos V or Seth McClung along with a Manny Parra or Corey Hart for a very quality player in return
good to see Gamel reestablishing himself though a little bit, hopefully thats a start to something good . . .
Ring Out Ahoya!
Yeah, Burns' presence turned it from a disaster into simply an embarrassing loss
Baseball’s great because you get a fresh chance almost every day, but it’s hard to look at that way when your bullpen is getting torched.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
I highly doubt
Melvin will trade any piece of the 25 man roster away. Probably only if what is recieved is better than and directly replaces what is given up.
It is what it is.
Gamel and Escobar
are more valuable than some pieces on this roster right now. I know right now is an exception with our pen but we are REALLY deep in the pen to the point where good guys aren’t getting time. Good problem to have

no
not on the compliments to Burns and Gamel, but to everything else. Other than Parra, the rest of our team is very solid. Why do we need to talk about trading away anyone. Especially not McClung and Villa, who have been pretty damn good.

Poll idea:
Should Parra be moved to the pen and who should replace him in the rotation?
Personally, I’d like to see CV get another shot as a starter.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
If Parra's out as a starter, he needs to go to AAA and continue to start regularly
Going to the bullpen isn’t going to help him at all.
I think Villanueva has started his last game for the Brewers and that Dillard and McClung are the next guys in line if Parra gets the axe.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Right
Parra needs to figure out his problems while starting, and with a WHIP inching closer and closer to 2, I’m thinking AAA is the place.

yes
either he goes to AAA or I will have to go to AA
"He had some firsts," said Brewers manager Ken Macha. "His first homer, his first Major League start, his first error and my first gray hair."
Two problems
First, how do you get him stretched out to start
Second, you make the pen much worse and risk not really improving the rotation
It is what it is.
ESPN bottom line:
“Brewers P David Riske to have elbow surgery could miss remainder of season”
top notch there
It is what it is.
he also is the third highest paid Brewers' pitcher this year
behind only Suppan’s $12.5 million and Hoffman’s $6.25. some how we are paying him over $4 million…

I really enjoy
watching the cubs lose on WGN. Those announcers are so whiny and come up with some pretty priceless excuses. Its also like theyre completely unprepared to witness a loss.
Parra is still the second best pitcher on the team by tRA
He’s been very unlucky by the metric.

Whereas Suppan is the 4th worst pitcher in the NL.

I said this last week :)
He’s been unlucky all over the place. I don’t think a demotion is necessary, but his control was awful and his mechanics looked weird tonight.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
It was terrible conditions.
Also – shit happens.

Control was awful?
It would be nice if he didn’t walk so many guys that his unlucky moments result in even more runs. Thankfully he only managed to to walk two last night or he might’ve given up fifteen runs.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Well, if he'd hit 100 pitches after just *three* innings, perhaps there'd have been less total damage...
Seriously though – either AAA or getting Dessentenced to a DL trip, something probably has to happen now. If only to give him time to rebuild his confidence…unlucky or not, the results are what they are, and they’re bound to have some effect by now.
