Why is Kendall even in today?

It’s Bush’s start in the rotation and he caught the night game. Rivera is supposed to be out there on both counts. Is Rivera injured? The old man is clearly laboring behind the plate.

Someone would probably argue that Kendall is coming off a big night last night.

But, here’s an important scouting note: When you’re arguing the merits of a player, and all you have to stand on is that one time when they did something good, they’re probably not very good.

I prefer to look at the big picture.

Yes, he’s hitting .333/.422/.444 as a Padre, but even with that factored in he still has a career OPS+ of 80.

by Kyle Lobner on Jun 25, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

It's too early to say

But…

  • after a strong 2007 finish for the Padres, Joe Thatcher has been pretty forgettable in 2008 and thus far in 2009.
  • Will Inman is in AAA, but has an ERA near 7. Keep in mind, though, he’s only 22, and has pitched just shy of 40 innings there (a PCL team to boot).
  • Steve Garrison has an ERA just under 4 in the rookie Arizona league.

I forget whom we drafted when Linebrink departed, though I bet BK knows.

Even if they turn out to be worthless so to speak

the team has to give whoever a ride. Can’t toss off Gerut now, we have to keep him for a while or at least thats the way it seems.

I agree with Mykenk (for once ;-) Useless=Useless The trade was a wash.

by ecocd on Jun 25, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly

The Brewers hadn’t any use for Gwynn, and the Padres did; they had no use for Gerut, and considering what’s going on with Duffy, the Brewers have a use for Gerut.

I’m wondering if it’s time to call up someone else, though; am I misremembering, or does Brendan Katin play outfield positions?

who quite willingly speak with an air of near infallibility said he was a fifth outfielder. Your whole selling a bridge thing seems like nonsense.

by ol Pete on Jun 25, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

He hasn't proven he's not. 30 games <> proof.

he has worked his way up to 4th outfielder in my book though.

by Mykenk on Jun 25, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Gee, it wasn't in direct response to that specific post.

It’s usually difficult to make a general comment towards you since you’re all over the place in conversations like this, so that post had to do. I would strive to be more targeted in my future comments, but that would go against the whole emulating-you thing again.

by Zeyes on Jun 25, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd say I was direct and specific

compared to your weird attempt at being insulting again. But hey, if you’re all whiny because your Gwynn projections are incorrect, so sorry. Keep the condescending insults and arrogance coming. You’ll have to try hard to top calling me a conspiracy nutjob for suggesting that individuals would act in a way consistent with what is known about human behavior.

by ol Pete on Jun 25, 2009 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

You have a very low threshold for feeling insulted.

I guess the last part is about some off-hand comment I must have made at some point, uh, around a year ago or more, given that I’ve usually been ignoring your weird baiting sprees since then. I don’t know whether to congratulate you on your fine memory or feel sorry….

by Zeyes on Jun 25, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think I've ever baited you

but hey, good job keeping the insults coming. I don’t buy your feigned ignorance either. You generally feel pretty proud of yourself. I confess, “conspiracy nutjob” makes me laugh and the fact that it was about individuals acting human is frosting. Come on now, you sure you don’t remember?

by ol Pete on Jun 25, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I vaguely do remember calling you a conspiracy nutjob or similar (probably more than once given your behaviour at the time)...

but I’ll be damned if I could be bothered to recall actual details – arguments with you really don’t rate that highly on my personal scale of important things to keep in memory. And on second thought, I’m even more impressed you manage so well – given how nearly all your arguments on this site seem to follow the same pattern, it must be difficult to keep who said what from blurring together.

I’d say you’re taking this a little too seriously, but you’d just ask me for proof if I did…

by Zeyes on Jun 25, 2009 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

excellent

Just keep the whole condescending thing with lots of insults coming. Your memory is starting to come around too. What a surprise! Hey, you weren’t being just a wee bit dishonest were you? And rather than taking it seriously, as I just said, I remember it because it was so amusing. It was stupid. And you were so proud of yourself.

by ol Pete on Jun 25, 2009 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay pete

You like “evidence”, apparently. What say you we make a little wager? What over/under would you like to set for the rest of Gwynn’s career?

It was a great selection of awesome.

by battlekow on Jun 25, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Two notes on Gwynn:

1) 67% of voters projected him as a career fifth outfielder, career minor leaguer or out of baseball in five years in this poll, conducted in February.

2) It was only a couple of months ago that Gwynn was DFA’d, could have been had for free, and no one claimed him.

If you really want to argue that Gwynn has much value to this or any team, you’re on a pretty small island.
