Game Thread #75: Giants (39-34) at Brewers (40-34)

San Francisco Giants at Milwaukee Brewers, Jun 28, 2009 1:05 PM CDT

Current Series

Brewers lead the series 2-0

Fri 06/26 WP: Yovani Gallardo
LP: Matt Cain
5 - 1 win
Sat 06/27 WP: Trevor Hoffman
LP: Brian Wilson
7 - 6 win

Jeff Suppan takes on Ryan Sadowski, who is making his major league debut for the Giants. Sadowski has been quite effective at AAA, with an 8:4ish strikeout to walk ratio over the past two seasons.

We get an interesting lineup today, with Mat Gamel leading off. Tom Haudricourt speculates that Craig Counsell's knee or leg is still bothering him.

3B Mat Gamel
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
2B Casey McGehee
CF Mike Cameron
RF Corey Hart
Jason Kendall
RHP Jeff Suppan

Bullpen rest report:

  • Carlos Villanueva pitched 1 inning on Friday (13 pitches)
  • Todd Coffey threw 2 pitches on Friday and 1 inning on Saturday (11 pitches)
  • Chris Smith threw 2 innings on Saturday (30 pitches)
  • Mitch Stetter threw 1 inning on Saturday (13 pitches)
  • Trevor Hoffman threw 1 inning on Saturday(19 pitches)

Gametime is 1:05. Go Brewers!

I'll call it now.

In the leadoff spot, Gamel walks, steals second, steals third, then scores on a ground-out.

Mark Rogers had a great start

No hits and no walks through three innings with four strikeouts, though he did hit a batter. He came out for the 4th, which is great in and of itself, but was removed after a walk and another HBP. Still, very promising.

It was a great selection of awesome.

how many positions with he play with the Cards?

I can imagine Tony having him move around the field quite a bit.

by Saltire on Jun 28, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably a lot of outfield and third base

Outfield against lefties to spell Duncan or Ankiel, and 3B against righties for Thurston.

It was a great selection of awesome.

by battlekow on Jun 28, 2009 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions

You'd think they'd want one of the few people in that lineup who can get on base to actually hit BEFORE Pujols

It’s not like DeRosa is so feared that they’re going to be giving Pujols Bush-ian fastballs just to avoid facing DeRosa with men on base.

It was a great selection of awesome.

I’ve only been following Gamel in the box scores for four years now. Is it possible

that we’re seeing the top two current candidates for NL rookie of the year in this series? I know the consensus is that McGehee is overachieving, but give the guy some credit – he’s been hitting at about the same pace since winter ball. Could very well be that he figured something out during the off-season, or simply needed a change of scenery.

And of course, Sandoval is a beast. Just an amazing contact and power hitter, and by all appearances this series, a legit 3B.

Haven’t heard much about other hot rookies this year…who am I missing?

though there’s little doubt he’ll be a very good hitter, if not great , he hasn’t really gotten going yet, and who knows if he’ll stick at third – though I think it’s more likely than him sticking at leadoff

by Wayfaerer on Jun 28, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Right

He’s holding his own, though, and still has a half of baseball to play with. There’s plenty of time for him to make a ROY run, and given his ability and the team’s apparently decision to stick with him on MLB roster, he’s a candidate.

It was a great selection of awesome.

Sadowski came from Cardinals in trade for Lew Burdette

I remember all through the 1963 season, the announcers kept saying, that Lew Burdette trade keeps looking better and better. Sadowski had a fairly promising rookie year (low ERA, but still had a losing record), but didn’t have much of a career to speak of.

it's easy

Suppan is all full of innings, he can’t eat anymore, while Narveson will omnomnom them for the rest of the day.

Best think about the last couple of season is I think I have finally learned how to be a fan for a contending team

As long as you are with in 5 or 6 games of 1st place in June/July no reason to freak out

Much easier to make it through the ups and downs this season so far

dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove

by GoGregGo on Jun 28, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll be honest

I’ve heard someone say it is green (a lot of Islamic countries use green as it is seemingly Muhammed’s favourite colour), but I think it is red. I’m prepared to be proved wrong though.

Libya is the only country in the world to have had a flag of just one colour.

I am actually a six year-old who has just finished his primary school project on flags.

Having just googled flags of the world

And looked at a poster with them all on it I’m now pretty sure it is red but I’m not about to count.

More useless flag facts....

Nepal’s flag is only one that is not rectangular or square.

Good one!

I knew there was one country with an odd-shaped flag but couldn’t think which one…

by MrLeam on Jun 28, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

point out that squares are techncailly rectangular anyway.
