Rumorville: Doug Davis & Felipe Lopez

Steve Gilbert at MLB.com talked to assistant GM Gord Ash, who said there had been "conversations" with the Diamondbacks:

"I think it speaks to what I talked about earlier, that because they are one of the few clubs that have available pieces, the asking price is way too high," Ash said. "So they don't have to make a deal yet."

Gilbert notes that the Brewers are in the market for help in starting pitching and at second base. Though the D'Backs have potential fits there with both Felipe Lopez and Doug Davis in the final years of their contracts, it's unclear if the talks were centered around those players.

The Brewers sit at 40-35, a percentage point above the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central, but were knocked around by the Giants today 7-0 and saw the rival Cards pick up Mark DeRosa last night.

Thougts on this potential deal?

Felipe Lopez?

In what parallel universe is he a “fit” on our team?

by Mykenk on Jun 29, 2009 8:37 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He plays 2B and is healthy

that would be the fit

Last I checked, our internal options were doing fine...

… and aren’t overpriced, as Fe-Lop would be.

by Mykenk on Jun 29, 2009 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not in favor of bringing in lopez

but if CC and MaG can’t go a full 9 like Alex Gonzales, the internal options are looking a lot less bright.

Doug Davis

He’s nothing special. We can make it to the All-Star Break with McClung and Burns.

That being said. We could really use pitching depth. Even if Parra and Bush come back in July, who’s to say somebody else won’t go down? Who’s to say Gallardo won’t hit a wall with the number of pitches he’s thrown so far this season? Acquiring Doug Davis is a fantastic idea that probably won’t come with too steep of a price. I don’t believe it would hinder us from making a push for Bedard, either.

Gallardo is a trooper

given how easily he bounces back from catastrophic injury and how readily he accepts taking a high pitch count, I see no reason to presuppose his limit is 100 pitches. Or x number of innings in a season. I think he has remarkable cross-training and healing power/metabolism.

That’s not saying he should toss 160 per game and go every 4 days, but I think the workload he has right now is just fine.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 29, 2009 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's completely up in the air, though

Since he has yet to pitch a complete major league season, we have to, at the very least, acknowledge that he might hit a wall. I wasn’t trying to make my post specific to Gallardo, I’m just trying to say that it’s unreasonable to expect the entire rotation to stay healthy for the rest of the season. If we expect to make the playoffs, we need to add some depth.

yeah, I agree

I just don’t think gallardo will be the next to fall via fatigue. He’s no sheets.

DD

he is a durable innings eater. he has pitched 98.2 innings so far with an era of 3.28 which is significantly better than any brewers pitcher aside from yo

by BenSheets15 on Jun 29, 2009 12:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

History tells us

that 3.28 is overachieving for Davis.

Besides, we already have two durable innings-eaters (nevermind Bush’s injury).

And note that I am not counting Suppan OR Burns.

I’m not saying we need to sign an ace, or that we have the means to, but I think we could do better than DD.

by Wayfaerer on Jun 30, 2009 12:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think signing an ace or a #2 is exactly what we need.

RJ posted a week or two back that he thought we needed a front of rotation guy to make us competitive in the playoffs. I agree with that. Inexplicably, from my perspective, DD’s name came up in that discussion. He’s not that guy. He makes a lot more sense if the Brewers think Parra’s unlikely to make it back up to the majors this year, though I’d hate to see what we’d have to give up to get him.

I’d like to do better than DD too, but who exactly is available? I know GM’s lie all the time as part of their occupation, but in this instance, I think Melvin’s comment that there isn’t much available looks pretty accurate.

i have a reasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jun 30, 2009 7:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No he's not....

… which is kind of the point I made in the first paragraph of my comment.

But there isn’t a #1 or #2 guy available, according to Melvin, and while I know GM’s lie a lot this time of year, it’s hard to argue with Melvin on that point right now. Cliff Lee might be available, but if the Indians wanted young MLB ready pitching for DeRosa, which obviously we don’t have, why should we think they’ll want something different for Lee?

My point, which I didn’t make very clear, is that if they went after DD now I’d have a hard time criticizing that move given Bush’s injury and Parra’s implosion at AAA in his last start. DD’s better than our alternatives at #5, in my opinion, and while I don’t like the idea of trading for an inning eating SP in this market, I can see the argument for doing so.

i have a reasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jun 30, 2009 8:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough...

… I could get on board with the move, provided it cost us next to nothing, which isn’t likely.

Yeah.

I feel the same way.

Snell

The great thing about a guy like Snell, other than the fact that he’s a 200-IP guy, is that he should be cheap, given his contract and AAA status. I don’t think the Rats would require much in a trade if we took on his contract. If we could get him turned around somewhat, he could be a great addition to our innings-eating arsenal and wouldn’t preclude us from finding more help elsewhere.

Since we’d be talking to the Rats anyway, I wonder what the deal is with Gorzelanny, who just fell apart last year after two sub-4 seasons.

I also think we should trade for Matt Capps - not to use as a pitcher, just to give Prince Fielder someone to beat on before every game. I think that might go a long way toward getting Prince to sign a long-term deal with us. :)

Right

I think our chances of making the playoffs are pretty good right now, without making any trades or acquisitions. (Though it will likely go down to the last week of the season, like last year.)

Getting someone like Doug Davis will improve those chances, so if we pretended that the D-Backs weren’t asking a mint for him, I’d be all for it. He’d be a great replacement for the likes of Parra, Bush, Suppan, etc.; in fact, he might be better than all three of them, although I’m a little suspicious of his 2009 revival.

Once we’d be in the playoffs, though, playing playoff teams, I’m not sure he’d be much better than what we have now. Taking a look at his 2009 Game Log, it looks like he’s pitched in 7 games against teams currently with records or .500 or better. In two of those games, against the G-Men and Cardinals back in mid-April, he pitched very well. In the other 5, he was lit up but good, giving up 21 earned runs (and 17 walks!) in 22 2/3 innings. Of course, you’re going to give up runs against better teams, and he’s not without some great starts against good competition, such as shutting out the Angels in his last start. Still, you don’t get to pitch against mediocre teams in the playoffs, and I don’t hold out much hope that he’d be able to keep a team like the Dodgers in check in a playoff series.

I would say, we need another CC as much as we did last year, if not moreso, thanks to the sudden ineffectiveness of Parra. Seeing as one isn’t available, I’d be more likely to go after someone like Snell than to trade prospects for CC-lite, Doug Davis. Everything about his 2009 season screams overachieving.

Sure, I don't think anyone's deluded about Davis even being CC-lite.

Still and all, even given that DD is obviously overachieving (nearly the same K/BB/HR peripherals as his first two Dbacks years, but a hit rate almost 20% lower), even if he regresses to something like his 4.50-ish FIP – in line with what he’s done the last few years, even including his not-so-hot last year as a Brewer – he’s a clear #3 pitcher and likely to be a significant upgrade for the rotation. Heck, technically that even makes him a credible playoff starter… If only we weren’t lacking more than one of those right now.

I've talked to dixie a little bit about Davis

He thinks Davis’s stuff has declined significantly this year from where it was in the past.

It was a great selection of awesome.

I totally agree

I think the most important thing we need to be looking for is a pitcher who can win playoff games. Between Suppan/Parra I don’t have much confidence that we can actually win a playoff series against a quality team.

by Metagen on Jul 2, 2009 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I think the best idea would be to look for a good pitcher, not for a pitcher who wins playoff games

I mean, Sabathia got rocked in the playoffs last year.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Jul 2, 2009 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't mean a pitcher with a history of winning playoff games, just a pitcher who's above average.

I feel like if a team doesn’t put at least 5 runs on Suppan then they haven’t played well. And in the playoffs, I can’t see him getting a win. Unless Parra is back by then at least playing 4.5 era baseball we need another starter.

If our rotation is missing a spot, its at #2, not 3.
