Game Thread #76: Mets (37-37) at Brewers (40-35)

New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers, Jun 29, 2009 6:08 PM CDT

Current Series

3 game series vs Mets @ Miller Park

Tue 06/30 7:05 PM CDT
Wed 07/01 1:05 PM CDT

After losing two of three to the Twins to open a nine-game homestand, the Brewers now need to take two of three from the Mets to finish the stretch at 5-4. Tonight, they'll send Braden Looper (5-4, 5.16 ERA) to the mound to try to get started.

Looper hasn't factored in the decision in four of his last five starts, and took the loss in the one exception. He has a 7.18 ERA during that stretch, and has allowed opposing batters to hit .301/.339/.549. Looper, of course, was a Met in 2004 and 2005, when he recorded 57 saves. In his ten other seasons, Looper has pitched very well against the Mets, posting a 2.35 ERA in 47 appearances.

For the Mets, it's 26-year old Fernando Nieve, making his fourth start. Nieve has been very effective in the big leagues, posting a 1.31 ERA in 20.2 innings. He faced the Brewers three times in 2006 as a member of the Astros, and went 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA in nine innings. On the season, he's posted a 0.968 WHIP.

Craig Counsell is back in the lineup tonight:

Craig Counsell  2B
J.J. Hardy  SS
Ryan Braun  LF
Prince Fielder  1B
Casey McGehee  3B
Mike Cameron  CF
Frank Catalanotto  RF
Jason Kendall  C
Braden Looper  RHP

And in the bullpen:

Carlos Villanueva last pitched on Friday.
Todd Coffey
last pitched on Saturday.
Chris Smith
pitched an inning yesterday.
Mitch Stetter
last pitched on Saturday.
Trevor Hoffman last pitched on Saturday.
Mark DiFelice pitched an inning yesterday.
Chris Narveson pitched an inning yesterday.

It's an early start tonight: 6:05 local time, even though the game is in Milwaukee. Monday's Game Thread is now open.

Not really.

He’s the one that allowed(or pushed for ) some of the ludicrous trades and free agent signings that got them into the mess they’re in now. Personally, I’d have preferred resigning Charlie V. and trading Redd for whoever…

Interesting tidbits from ESPN

Looper had 572 appearances in relief before he became a starter and they said he’s the only player that’s found longevity as a starter – they made it sound like no one else who had gone from bullpen to starter after so many season had more than 10 starts

I hate

by Bigdogg2002 on Jun 29, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I only have the Wii (just got it a few weeks ago)

One thing I read that is kinna cool if true.. If you can get a new release game right when it comes out… You can keep the game if you like it and I believe you get to purchase it at a used price. I think I read you can get 5/10 bucks off.. I believe they also send you a 5 dollar off coupon each month.. Plus I think 5% off when you are a member for 3 months! KL would know if i’m in the ballpark.

by Flag Up on Jun 29, 2009 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep, $5 coupons every 3 months to use on keeping/buying games.

And you do get the used price. Sometimes they’ll run out of a new release game and they’ll send you the next one on your list instead, but after a few tries you’ll learn to time it so your game gets back to them right on release day, so you get first priority.
