Lets Trade for Ian Snell

In a superb return to Class AAA Indianapolis yesterday, he fanned 17 batters over seven innings, including his first 13 outs of a 2-1 victory against visiting Toledo.

This came four days after requesting a demotion from the Pirates -- one that management already had been discussing -- because of what he described as "too much negativity" in Pittsburgh.

He must want "out" of Pittsburgh.  His contract is a bit of a problem, but if the Brewers can get the Pirates to pay a good portion of it and it costs us a Mike Burns or a Chase Wright, why not do it?

Team Chemistry?

I’m thinking that Ian & Ryan wouldn’t be rooming together on any road trips. Also, his game pace reminds me of Claudio Vargas – sucking all the joy from the game one pitch per minute at a time.

he's tried to trade Snell for "several months"

GM Neal Huntington admitted on Sunday that he’s tried to trade Snell for “several months” but hasn’t been offered a legitimate baseball return, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Spin:
Huntington said he made a mistake signing Snell to a three-year deal that looked good on paper but didn’t take into account the “human element.” “Our focus now is to salvage something from this situation,” Huntington said, “whether that’s a trade, or Ian comes back — maybe that’s in the bullpen — we’ll see.” For his part, Snell credited an escape from the “negativity” and the performance of his Triple-A catcher for his 17-strikeout performance on Sunday. “The guys made me feel welcome here,” Snell said. “(Erik) Kratz did a tremendous job of setting up. You know, he didn’t set up too early where they can see where I’m going. He mixed the pitches real well.” At this point, it would be interesting to see what Snell could do as a reliever, something scouts projected him as before he ever made it to the majors.

That's terrible management there

I’d certainly give up something of value for Snell.

I last May, still no more than Nick Neugebauer not.

He’s at worst a 4.50 ERA type guy. His peak is around a 4 ERA. That’s good stuff right there, and he’s durable.

At worst...what?

He’s only been below that once in his career and he’s already 27. Yeah, he had a good 2007, but I wouldn’t rush to forget the rest of his career in hopes he does that again.

At worst was the wrong way to say that.

However, ERA is not really the best way to judge ERA. He has good career peripherals and a career FIP of about 4.3, and his tERA is probably closer to about 4.8. I’m pretty sure those Pittsburgh defenses he pitched in front of were not exactly stellar. And then the other thing is that I tend to speak in terms of true-talent— I would say that CC Sabathia is at worst a 3.50 ERA guy right now, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t post a 4.50 ERA or something.

I last May, still no more than Nick Neugebauer not.

"but hasn’t been offered a legitimate baseball return"

I’m sure some teams would offer to return some baseballs to the pirates….

(an aside: isn’t it the pirates who are supposed to get the plunder, but are supposed to legitimately return stuff when caught?)

Snell would be a good pickup

The clubhouse cancer/malcontent thing gives me pause, but after slogging through a career with the perenially awful Pirates, I think a trade to a division leader might tweak his attitude a bit.

That said, I think it’s more likely that the Pirates would trade within the division than another top-end team. Or the “we’re always in the race, no matter how bad we are” Astros.

When the trade-for-an-affordable-pitcher talks came up before the season, the Pirates were my first thought. Snell and Gorzellany have been solid and, to my knowledge, durable middle-of-the-rotation type starters (without looking at stats), and Zach Duke is still quite young with a pretty big upside. Aside from division considerations, it seemed like a good match.

But, what do we have that the Pirates need?

Yeah, I couldn’t type that last sentence without laughing.

I'd trade for Snell

I think he’s a good buy-low candidate (though how low we’d be buying after that 17-strikeout performance is debatable). That said, we don’t have anything close to the full facts, and sometimes you have to consider more than the numbers. Assuming the Brewers do not trade for Snell, which is obviously the likely outcome with or without the character assassination, I’m happy to stand by their evaluation, considering they probably know a lot more about it than we do.

It was a great selection of awesome.

Ditto that

Especially considering his considering his contract. $3M this year – $4.2M next year and club options in 2011/2012.

That's the contract the GM is crying over

Christ, Melvin pisses away more than that by the end of May every year.

Exactly

That is 30% less than we wasted on Gagne last year…

and less than Looper for each season

and Looper was something of a bargain. At least compared to other mid-rotation former Cardinals.

Also, cheese.

Once again

Why is that the barometer for a good/bad contract?

Before we all start doing backflips over this guy

He was facing the Toledo Mud Hens. The Hens are K-ing at a historic(?) rate. They average 9.3 K’s per game, and are led by Mike Hessman with 96 Ks in 308 PAs. They have 3 of the Top 4 and 5 of the top 10 in Ks in the International League.

Assist to Goldstein at BP for the heads up

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

by Hyatt on Jun 30, 2009 12:39 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I'd do it.

Sometimes all a guy needs is a little change of scenery. I mean who would have guessed that Todd Coffey would be as reliable as he is given his past. We need pitching and the comments by Pirates’ management can’t possibly have helped his value.

As for his contract, I don’t really see it as that big of a problem.

and Prince is always available

to provide his own unique brand of, um, in-game encouragement. See Parra, Manny.

Yeah.

’Cause look how well that worked.

it worked well for Fielder

perhaps he needs a voodoo doll or a dart board with Manny’s face or something. So he can take out frustrations on other people without ACTUALLY taking the frustrations out on another person.

Now Snell is saying he was suicidal

I say we sign him and make him Kendall’s roommate.

It was a great selection of awesome.

Doug Melvin should be talking to the Pirates about him right now

I’d take on the contract if we don’t have to give up a baseball player for him.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Jul 2, 2009 11:56 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

a couple of trades were already shot down by the pirates

because they weren’t getting enough out of the bargain. If the pirates were willing to just unload him, they would have already done so.
