Mark DiFelice to Bereavement List; Chris Smith to Milwaukee
The Brewers will have to place one of their injured players (David Riske or Rickie Weeks) on the 60-day DL to free up a 40-man roster spot.

So what I said in my ill-fated fanpost… Smith is k-ing 10 per 9 and walking 1 at AAA, I would immediately trust him in some higher leverage situations.

Same here...
As I wrote on the Corey Hart thread a few days ago,
Chris Smith sure looks like he could step into the setup role for either [DiFelice or McClung]
Of course, that was then predicated on one of those guys moving into the rotation, not to the bereavement list. That said though, with DiFelice not returning until after the weekend, it’ll be interesting what the corresponding roster move will turn out to be – I guess Parra gets one last shot to right the ship on Sunday, and if he blows up again, Smith will presumably get to stay on the 25-man roster for a bit longer than just this week. (Or Burns could go back down even if Parra stays, though I suspect they’ll like having an exclusive long reliever available.)

This is why it's okay to leave multiple spots on the 40-man open
You never know when the two or three waiver claims you just made will get in the way of two other guys you need added to the 40-man ASAP.

exactly
With that in mind, why can’t both Weeks and Riske be put on the 60 day DL?

Roster rules are so crazy
Maybe they’re both on the trading block as we near the trade deadline and there’s some weird rule about trading players on the DL. Not that any team in their right mind would take a player on the DL for the season, but you never know.

well...there is this crazy roster rule
as I understand it, if someone gets placed on the 60-day DL as the playoffs approach, anyone in the organization before the cutoff day (possibly playing the same position, possibly not, depending on your interpretation of the rules) can fill in for the person placed on the DL. If you place them on the DL right now, their slots on the 40-man will likely be filled immediately with someone else from the organization, giving you less flexibility if/when we do make the playoffs. If we keep them on the 15-day DL, we can convert them to the 60-day DL after the roster cutoff date, making it eligible for us to add anyone to the 40-man or 25-man after that date and still allow us to use them in the playoffs.

so...basically, keeping Weeks and Riske both off the 60-day for now
would allow us to add an infielder to replace weeks (maybe that’s why Laurie, Escobar, and seemingly 20 other individuals are getting starts at second base right now). Or a pitcher to replace Riske, from any level, whether on the 40-man or not.

The commissioner's office has to approve trades for injured players, I think
