Rumorville: Brandon Backe
Adam McCalvy spills the beans gets a "you're really asking about this?" reaction:
The Brewers will do their due dilligence on right-hander Brandon Backe, the former Astro who was designated for assignment last week and refused a trip to Houston's Triple-A club on Monday. [...] "You have to at least take a look," Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said.
Backe has been injured a lot over the course of his career, making only thirteen major league starts in 2006 and 2007 combined. He did, however, start a career-high 31 games in 2008, leading the league in earned runs and home runs allowed. He missed two months this year with an injury and was unimpressive upon his return to the majors, giving up 15 runs in 13 innings while striking out 10 and walking six. McCalvy notes his best moments came in the 2004 and 2005 postseasons, when he appeared in seven games with a 2.95 ERA and 0.98 WHIP over 36 2/3 innings.

I Have To Admit..
When I saw he became a FA this morning, I took a look at him….since my memory gets hazy on some players the further you go back….and I found pretty much what your summary says. Not sure he’d be worth picking up unless he’d be willing to play in AAA as an emergency pitcher….an assignment he turned down with the ’Stros.

If he winds up in the rotation somehow and Dave Bush is active
Suppan would be the only pitcher who wouldn’t get rave reviews for being a good hitter. What an offensive starting staff!

I'm guessing the Cards will not be considering him ...
especially if Pujols has any say in the matter.

There are a lot of scrap-heap pitchers better than Backe
It’s awfully hard to give up as many homers as he has this year. His career low in FIP is about 4.40, that was 6ish years ago, and his second lowest is like 4.9. He’s one of the worst starting pitchers to continually maintain a job in baseball.
I last May, still no more than Nick Neugebauer not.

Haudricourt's Twitter:
“Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he has no interest in RHP Brandon Backe, recently released by Houston. Melvin is looking for a pitcher though.”
It was a great selection of awesome.
