Game Thread #55: Milwaukee Brewers (31-23) at Atlanta Braves (26-26)
Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves, Jun 5, 2009 6:35 PM CDT
The NL East swing continues tonight as the Brewers move to Atlanta. Yovani Gallardo is scheduled to start the first game against Jair Jurrjens. Jurrjens is the righty the Braves received for Edgar Renteria two years ago. He throws in the low 90s and uses a changeup and slider about 20% of the time each to complement his fastball. His strikeout and walk numbers are not spectacular, but at about 6:3 for his career, they are solid.
Mat Gamel will get a chance to start all three games in this series, and we will be witnessing the Braves debut of Nate McLouth in tonight's game. He'll bat third ahead of Chipper Jones. Lineups:
BREWERS
C. Counsell, 2B
J. Hardy, SS
R. Braun, LF
P. Fielder, 1B
M. Cameron, CF
M. Gamel, 3B
C. Hart, RF
J. Kendall, C
Y. Gallardo, P
BRAVES
K. Johnson, 2B
Y. Escobar, SS
N. McLouth, CF
C. Jones, 3B
B. McCann, C
G. Anderson, LF
J. Francoeur, RF
M. Prado, 1B
J. Jurrjens, P
Gamel, of course, is starting because Jurrjens has never--not even once!--gotten him out.
The bullpen rest situation:
- Chris Smith pitched an inning on Wednesday in Nashville
- Seth McClung pitched Wednesday for 3.1 innings and Monday for one inning
- Todd Coffey threw an inning and 1/3 last night
- Carlos Villanueva last pitched Monday for one inning
- Mike Burns pitched Tuesday for four innings.
- Mitch Stetter threw 2/3 of an inning last night
- Trevor Hoffman threw 1 inning on Wednesday
Game time is 6:35 Central. It's Yovani day, and go Brewers!

I don't know if I said this yesterday
I enjoy the bullpen statuses (statii?) each game. It’s good info for a fan to know as he or she watches the game.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
On that note...
not that I’ve had any time to be around games and game threads lately anyway, but I really appreciate the start time being listed in the previews when they (as they usually do) go up early…
I'm not sure if this is what you mean
But the gametime is listed in the header on the page when you open the comment section up
Took me a while to figure out what the heck you meant!
Intriguing, I never noticed that the page title isn’t completely identical to the thread subject for game threads. Automated integration with SBN’s events database, I guess.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Game threads are special
They don’t show up in the SBNation box on Yahoo! team pages like other stories.

Coming from a Braves fan:
We’re actually 26-26, not 26-28.
A few things about this series from a Braves fan:
Jurrjens is our best pitcher and truly is our “ace”. However, he gets NO run support. He should easily be 7-2 or 8-2, not 5-2.
Our lineup, well without Nate McLouth anyways, is very hit-and-miss. We’ll score no more than 2 runs over a 5 game stretch, and then look like ’27 Yankees the next 5 ballgames.
Our bullpen, like the lineup, is very inconsistent as well. Its been better as of late tho. Rafael Soriano, who is our 8th inning guy (and he should be our closer) has been literally unhitable. One of our surprises is LOGGY Eric O’Flarahty, who has been great for us. I would bet 5 bucks you’ll see him when Prince Fielder comes up.
Our defense is good, not great.
And on sunday, Tommy Hanson, our pride and joy, will make his debut. He’s probably the best pitching prospect we’ve ever had. It’ll be interesting to see how he does.
"Jason Heyward might be the best offensive prospect i've seen in fifteen years. His game is solid. I would trade any of the current players we have on our 25 man roster for Heyward. He's that good." - NL Scout.
Steve Avery has to be close in terms of all-time pitching prospects
- overall in 1990 according to Baseball America.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

avery was number one?
hmm, didnt know that. i knew he was high up there but not THAT high. Hanson was #4. So Hanson is probably the SECOND best pitching prospect we’ve ever had.

Wow, Bruce Chen was 4th overall in 1999
Did not remember that.
Mark Wohlers was #13 overall in 1992.
Jose Capellan was #25 overall in 2005, after being traded to the Brewers :)
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
I was all ready to snark about Capellan's miniscule contributions to the Crew...
but he was better than I recalled. 108 ERA+ across 100 innings isn’t all that shabby anyway; too bad he wore out his welcome.
Of course, right now he’s running an ERA near 9 through 50 innings for the Astros’ Triple-A club…
MLB.com lies
I swear it said that.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
I wouldn’t call Jurrjens your best pitcher. Vazquez and probably Lowe are both better, even if Jurrjens has been sporting the better ERA. Jurrjens’ FIP and K/9 indicate he’s been pitching over his head, though considering he’s facing the Brewers he will probably get around 15 K tonight ; )

Tomo Ohka into the starting rotation for him, heh.
Fitting enough anyway – I see Tomo already tossed 5 innings apiece in relief for Carmona’s last two starts.
He's lacking control pretty badly.
LetsGoTribe had a good Pitchfx article on him a few weeks back. They were hoping he could be their 3rd straight Cy Young winner.

TH On Bushie
Because the Brewers have an off day Monday, there is no rush to see ifBush will miss a turn or have to have it pushed back a day or two. He’ll try to throw a bullpen session Sunday to test it, and manager Ken Macha said he’d decide then when Bush would pitch again.
“I don’t think he wants to miss a (whole) turn,” said Macha.
At least Dave is a gamer. Sheets would be on the 60-Day DL after taking a shot to the arm like that. I am pro-Bush.

Pitchers hitting
Rock intimated that Macha was grumping about opposing pitchers driving in runs. Overall on the year, National League pitchers are batting .138/.186/.173—a 359 OPS. Brewers opponent pitchers are batting .136/.183/.252—a 436 OPS.
As you can see, the AVG/OBP allowed are almost exactly league average, but the slugging is quite a bit higher. In fact, the Brewers have allowed three of the eight home runs by NL pitchers this year, and of course Gallardo himself has account for two others, which means that Brewer games have accounted for over half of the home runs by pitchers in the NL this year.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
