Brewers 4, Braves 0
LVP: Corey Hart (-.074)
Yovani Gallardo was his usual unhittable self, allowing only two safeties through eight innings, though he was wild early, falling behind most batters and walking four.
Mat Gamel provided the offense for the Brewers, doubling in two runs in the 4th and singling in another in the 5th. Mike Cameron also drove in a run with an RBI groundout that probably would have been an inning-ending double play had Yunel Escobar not booted it. Escobar had a rough inning defensively, also committing a throwing error on Ryan Braun's infield single that allowed Braun and J.J. Hardy each to take an extra base.
Carlos Villanueva came in and pitched a 1-2-3 9th to finish off the victory.

Do they have the Tom Glavine PSA about grammar or some such
Where a guy keeps heckling him, “Pitcher’s got a rubber arm,” over and over and finally Glavine walks over and says, “It’s pitcher HAS a rubber arm.”

Nice AAA debut for the Commander...
6.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 8 H, 1 BB, 1 K
Currently in line for the loss though as the offense only managed one hit and one run while being handed 7 walks in 6 innings.
Is it that nice of a debut?
I mean, good ERA, but we already have one Tim Dillard. I was/am hoping for a continuation of his mysteriously high strikeout rate.

A lot of people seemed pissed at him yesterday, but I thought he handled Gamel great today: he got the start, got to stay in and face the lefty reliever, but then got pulled for defense in the 8th.

Not really sure about leaving Gallardo in
Villanueva could’ve handled the eighth and Smith could pitch the ninth with Hoffman ready for any baserunner-induced save situation. But leaving Gallardo in worked out fine and the ’pen will be almost totally rested tomorrow.

give smith another day to sleep off his promotion

I think the last time it happened was MIL @ HOU on May 21
Tim Byrdak and Jeff Fulchino in the 7th. It also happened in the game where HP umpire Bill Welke struck Colorado pitcher Matt Daley lame.
It probably happens most often when a LOOGY lets a runner get on and the righty brought in gets torched. Or a righty allows a couple runners on to start an inning and the LOOGY doesn’t do his job.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
The last time it happened where both relievers faced at least 3 batters
Was September 17, 2008, when Scott Elbert and Jason Johnson couldn’t retire the Pirates in the 7th.

didnt he have another no hitter taken away because it was a group effort?
If I remember right at first MLB called it a no hitter than said no has to be only one pitcher
Let me spell it for you Cub fans O N E H U N D R E D A N D O N E Y E A R S
He had a no-hitter in 1990. It might be something else you’re thinking of (the six-pitcher Astros no-hitter?) but MLB still considers those no-hitters.

I know it's late
but regarding New Glarus beer, be wary of the Imperial Saison. I typically love their small production brews but this…it’s borderline undrinkable. It’s really tart…kind of reminds me of a bottle of apple juice you forgot about in your fridge for six months and then drank. The guys on beerratings.com or whatever it is say they’re buying it and stashing it in their cellar for a year to let it mellow, I’m not about to toss it but I think my only option is to do the same.
Anyone else give it a try? What do you think?
also good game tonight
Brewers win, Gallardo’s awesome, my softball team is miserable, sun rises in the morning, etc…
not a big fan of any of the new glarus brews
to be honest, i think they’re overproduced and too ‘nichey’, if that makes sense. ill stick to my milwaukee microbrews.
I haven't tried it
But it’s not uncommon for Belgian-style beers to be given a sourness, though saisons are usually mild. Sourness in beer can definitely take some getting used to; if you really want to experience something, buy a gueuze sometime.

So Russell Martin wears "J. Martin" on the back of his jersey to honor his mother?
That’s kind of odd. It would be even more respectful to just turn around and face her.
Brutal 9th inning for the Phils. Two outs, nobody on against Lidge, and he gives up a two-strike single to Casey Blake, walks Matt Kemp, then Pedro Feliz boots J. Martin’s grounder, followed by a first-pitch game-winning double from Andre Ethier.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
How does that count as a blown save against Lidge?
by Saberilliterate on Jun 6, 2009 6:30 AM CDT up reply actions
Lidge entered with a 3-2 lead
Then the Dodgers won. He doesn’t get off the hook for the blown save because there was an error much in the same way he gets saddled with the loss.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Sorry – should have prefaced my question better. I understand the rule – just don’t think that is fair to the pitcher. He got the ground ball right to the SS – not his fault that the SS has hands like the incredible hulk – so he shouldn’t get saddled with the BS or the L on his stat line.
by Saberilliterate on Jun 6, 2009 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions
It's almost like the pitcher doesn't have control over whether he gets a win, loss, or save
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
He was still on the mound and could have gotten the third out after the error
Sure, he should have been out of the inning, but he also could have gotten out of the inning after the error. He also could have gotten the would-be third out in some other way than a grounder to Feliz. It’s unlucky and unfair to Lidge, but them’s the breaks. I’m sure he’s picked up some wins after blowing saves thanks to his offense, so it evens out.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
It sucks, for sure, but that's sports
It’s the same problem you see in football, where a good quarterback will get saddled for the teams record in either direction when the defense may won or lost games.
It may not be fair, but in the same vein a pitcher who is struggling can still win if his offense is just that hot (or the opposing pitcher is struggling even worse) so it kinda balances out, and I guess that balance is the only way in which this is fair, you get handed wins by what the other guys on your team and their team do, and you take the losses and blown saves as well.
I guess it could even come down to “well if he had struck the batter out instead of allowing a ground ball,” but that gets so nit-picky that it doesn’t seem worth it. The whole situation is the nature of the beast, there has to be a winner and a loser, even ties will still have MVPs and LVPs
So with Gallardo staying in late
That means the bullpen should be pretty good incase the Crew serves up bad soup tonight right?
as has been said the thought of Soup and Manny back to back
Makes me greatful to Ganesha that our pen is rested.
Having said that Soup will throw 7 innings of 4 hit 1 run ball leaving the pen in even better shape to come in in the 2nd inning after Manny gives up 20 run.
Yes still a little down on young Mr. Parra at the moment.
